He was actually trying to bring back the one love he lost, by recreating her, but only with un-success, they kept dying, like our love dose becuase it never can replace that first love we once had. At the end he gave up...
He was trying to clone his girlfriend/wife/significant other. He looked for matched to inject her DNA into to turn into her. But, when he was finally successful, she wasn't the same person. She had the same DNA but not the personality, the love for him, and so he ends his life as pennance for all the women he killed and sets the clone free to find her happiness
