Do not sleep on Ren and sam (this is a mans world) medley.

As well as ren and Sam's original song blind eyed. Both the MC live edition as well as the live edition with the green wall in the background

I Shot the Sherriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop is a live busking track where Ren sings alone and plays more guitar. If you get any copyright claims, challenge it and it will be cleared, Ren loves the extra promotion of reactors and believes we should all be helping each other, lifting all boats.

They do another duet called How To Be Me and IMO, it is probably the best duet I've ever heard. Really interesting arrangement and cadence choices. I definitely agree about duets being somewhat cringy if not done well, but they harmonize so well together. The other song conveys even more emotion -really heavy subject about suicide and the loss of Ren's close friend. More than singing, I think the aim of their collabs are to drive home intense performances and can be appreciated on that level, despite the feelings about duets.

Would love to see a reaction of Chinchilla's "Fingers (LIVE) for Hunger TV where she's doing her own thing rather than a supporting role for Ren. Their other Duet How To Be Me (LIVE) is also great.

I think them doing a counter-harmony really worked for the song and really added to the subject matter, like they brought their own personal experiences which added to that counter harmony. Great breakdown and reaction.

So happy to see you doing this track which has become one of my all time favourites duets. Ren is just totally outstanding but we have come to accept his brilliance, but Chinchilla is also a true force and her Fingers LIVE is simply stunning. How to be Me by them both is also so very touching and beaitiful.

Ren and Eden Nash collaborations are money too. Driving to the beach kinda vibe.
But for you, I would check out “Blind Eyed” by him and his bud Sam Tompkins. I prefer the Music crowns session by the way. Best sound quality although there’s a charm to the busking versions too.

    • @jimjones6106
      @jimjones6106 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I kinda found this reaction difficult to watch like someone who doesn't know the difference between echo and reverb trying to explain it or the difference between shouting and singing or even how a harmony works this song is great and its because its a duet and its chinchillas vocal lift at the end that has everyone close to tears. And as for a voice I've played and listened to music for more years than i care to say and chinchillas voice is the only one i can think of that gives me chills when listening to her. 😊

    • @SkaterWillsy
      @SkaterWillsy ปีที่แล้ว +12

@jim jones I'm no musician and nor do I care to pretend that I am but the focus was all on Ren and no focus on how amazing chinchilla sounds amd the blend of their voices together. If she is doubting her singing ability, range, breath control or anything then she needs to watch fingers live to change her mind

Ren does remarkable duets with amazing partners. I love his work with Chinchilla - and I love her independent work, too. In this one, she's supporting him and that's the way she uses her voice. In her cover of Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing the dynamics are reversed - he supports her. Watch for his duets with Sam, too.

In my opinion, the video show 2 ghosts who explain their life having to take some pills to feel good/happy because of mental health problem. The light glitch when the woman appears for her verse for example and the fact they're in white. It's a representation of two souls. The text of this song is so deep and good. That's maybe why Chincilla it's not a normal duet but a duet randomly , two souls who speak/sing in the same time.

Love your reaction - I always love when talented musicians react to Ren (and you ARE talented) as they often see things from a more professional angle.
If you prefer Ren's singing voice, then, apart from anything from the Big Push (his band), I would recommend his cover of Elvis's 'Can't help falling on love' or perhaps one of his older songs: 'Freckled Angels' (about his friend, Joe, who sadly took his own life) or 'Run Away' or my favourite 'It's Alright'.
This City and Ceiling are excellent by the way, both are on my playlist and I just heard Julianna today which is a fantastic vocal.

Your perceptions and analysis are better than most Ren reactors. Very genuine, candid, informed comments. Musically, technically and psychologically insightful and yet personal. You'll be getting more attention from Ren fans. Impressive line up of instruments behind you. You saw things, analyzed things that 90% of other observers missed. The Ren Universe is extremely interconnected and vibrant. As you plug in, you will blow up and benefit from the hive effect. Enjoyable, real and yet grounded. Appreciate not over hyped or promotional. Hard to find good reviews, reactions. This and your others are several notches above typical. Thanks for good entertainment value just from being yourself. Prime.

The Ren Rabbit Hole is DEEP! He has a big catalog with all his busking history, his bands 'Trick The Fox' and 'The Big Push,' his collaborations with artists like Chinchilla (Daisy Matilda Bertenshaw) - she is a whole other Rabbit Hole you'll have to discover as well! [Fingers - Live for HungerTV, Cut You Off (Official Video), Little Girl Gone (Official Music Video)] Then there are his Demos, Love Music, Freckled Angels, and Sick Boi albums and a number of singles and EPs.
'Hi Ren' was the 'overnight success' trigger for Ren. Ren's backstory can be learned from a number of interviews, I'd suggest checking them out: The Charismatic Voice (Elizabeth Zaroff), Justin Hawkings Rides Again, Chris Liepe, Zach Sang Show all have good ones and will fill in some of the questions you have.
Now that you're on the Ren Reactor list, look for the afterburners to kick in and you'll be at double your subs in no time!
Here is a bit of what I post to Ren reactors:
Ren Erin Gill was born in Wales and moved to Brighton UK.
Ren's dad got him a small beat-up guitar at a flea market when he was 8 years old and Ren took it everywhere, obsessed with learning to play, and write songs, by 13 he spent most of his time learning guitar by slowing down TH-cam videos, and practicing piano.

The only job Ren ever had was at 16 at a Coop and he was fired after throwing sprouts at a coworker. He began busking on the streets of Brighton where he picked up some money and that made him think he could do it for a living. He'd be in two bands that busk in Brighton, you can find YTs of them online, 'Trick The Fox, and 'The Big Push.'
He was in school for music at Bath Spa University, and got a contract with Sony, but soon after his undiagnosed Lyme Disease was disabling, and he went back to live with his mom in Wales where he spent most of his time in pain in bed with little energy to do anything. Sony agreed to let him out of his contract, he was 19.
When he was feeling up to it, he wrote volumes of lyrics and worked on his guitar. He says his hard drives must have 1000 songs on them. Part of his misdiagnosis (see 'Sick Boi') was bipolar and ME/CFS, he was put on many drugs including Diazepam (see the video by that name), that made him hallucinate and was in part with the Lyme infection cause of psychosis and a sense of derealization from the drug he hoped would help (see 'Chalk Outlines').
He was certain he wouldn't live to 30 and at times was thinking of giving up (see 'Suic*de'), but maybe his experience with his childhood friend kept that at bay (see 'For Joe'), in trying to find answers when the doctors were making things worse, he got some information from an ME support group that suggested his mental health problems could be due to an infection.
He went to a gastroenterologist with his mom and pretended to have a stomach bug that he said antibiotics worked before, he took them, and his mental health improved. With that as a clue he got money together to go to an Infectious Disease doctor in Belgium who just reviewing history told him he thought he had Lyme Disease even before the test result came in, and they did show that.
This gave Ren hope that he had a path, he began his road of treatment, and about age 25 he was making music again, you can find many old videos of busking on the street, a few collaborations, search under 'The Big Push,' he independently released his first album 'Freckled Angels.'
Ren used a found space in the basement of a friends flat for 'Hi Ren' but the landlord came and told them to leave, they begged for more time, but they only managed 4 takes (Ren and his brilliant videographer Samuel Perry-Falvey do dozens of takes as perfectionists, and they have to as they are mostly all live one takes with no cuts or edits! Recall this when you watch 'The Tales' they did 54 takes just on the last segment Violets Tale alone in the Lanes in Brighton).
After being kicked out, Ren thought 'Hi Ren' was a disaster, he wouldn't be able to fix as he was off to Canada the following week for a long course of treatment. But after editing the video he showed it to a friend who turn to him and said, 'this is going to change your life.'
Ren was in Canada the next week as the number of 'Hi Ren' blew up. 'Ren Reactors' were now a thing on TH-cam, this drove his album sales when he dropped 'Sick Boi', and it became the number one album in the UK.
Some of Ren's works fall into a genre of storytelling that's gained the name 'Bardcore,' and one reactor actually mentioned the show 'The Witcher' and the character of 'Jasker.' A Medieval Troubadour or Bard.
'Hi Ren' was the gateway acid trip for most who found him, and then explored the pharmacopeia of his back catalog as well as the strains of his new releases.
'Hi Ren' I'd put in his 'personal journey - illness path,' while 'The Tales' are more of his social justice sort of work. Here is what I can think of for recommendations:
    Ren Gill
Music journey - his illness path:
    Crutch
    Hi Ren
    Sick Boi
    Diazepam
    Depression
    Chalk Outlines [featuring Chinchilla]
How to Be Me [featuring Chinchilla]
Cross between his path and his childhood best friend:
    Freckled Angels
    Suic*de
    For Joe
    Social Justice songs:
    Dominos
    The Tale of Jenny & Screech (Full) [includes the three parts including Violet's Tale}
    Money Game Part 1
Money Game Part 2 (Official Lyric Video)
    Money Game Part 3
    Eden
There are some 'fun' videos as well (going to need some to keep from using up all the tissues!):
    Power
    Murderer
    Girls!
    Uninvited
    Animal Flow
Money Game Part 3 is his most ambitious production yet, most of every other video was done guerilla style (begging forgiveness rather than ask permission, using found locations - 'Hi Ren' he only managed 4 takes before the landlord kicked them out) They actually had a budget and arranged a venue for it, you can find many 'making of' videos for Money Game Part 3.
This video was only released after an elaborate online collaborative puzzle solving game which you can still check out. Each video had a solution that when solved opened a new video with a new puzzle until you got to the 'Prize,' the penultimate video of 'Eden' then Money Game Part 3 dropped.
Ren's 'Money Game ARG (Alternative Reality Game) contest.

I hear you on the duets. My first listen I wasn't totally on board with Chinchilla, but repeated listens really help it gel for me.
But their work on the live rendition of How To Be Me was absolutely amazing from the first notes. It is an absolute must hear for any Ren or Chinchilla fan.
The lights flicker twice, here. I feel that the first flicker is when the chair and guitar appear in the corner that we can't see. The second time is when Chinchilla gets added to the scene.

I agree with you about REN’s voice he can use it like another instrument. He has range, power, versatility and soul in his voice. You should listen to the “Demo Tapes” Volumes 1 and 2 are my favorites, every song is very good and it’s his original material produced by him. His live busking with his former band The Big Push showcases another side of REN the guitarist and performer, he always delivers. Two original songs he did with the band, Oh My Women and Precious are quit beautiful too.

Chincilla is one of the best vocalist on the planet i think. Ren is a master artist but saying that he is carrying the song is kind of mmmmm. Her counter harmony's are on point and the tremble in Ren's voice is gone when they start singing together, so that tells you that she is lifting the weights in the song. This is not a bash on Ren, he is a genius, but she is a beast vocally.

I get what you mean. Especially in live performances when you got 2 people belting it. Sometimes it makes my ears ring. I think the way she kind of trails the rhythm of the song is perfect for a duet though and really helps.

I don't think they were singing that hard, in order to control the immense reverb that was available. When Chinchilla comes in, you hear the gain turning up as much as possible, so she must be almost whisper singing. Just a guess, but impressive technical ability if that's what they were doing. This would also make sense where they appear to be belting into each others faces, without setting up a standing wave in each other's heads. You would see the strain, I think. Maybe not.

It's not rude to have an opinion and you complimented their performance. I'm not a musician, which I think is sometimes a benefit, I don't need to understand what makes it good... I just call it "chemistry" (also connection like you said). Ren is definitely a perfectionist in some ways, though I doubt he worries too much about the perfect notes, I believe he's more of a "let's do it until we get gold" kind of guy which allows for the freedom and expression of passion. I've heard vocal coaches and professional singers talk about how "imperfect" notes actually lend a lot more emotion to singing.

Great reacton. Love your takes on Ren's music. Ren is self taught on guitar. He says he learned from TH-cam videos. He also is good bass and piano player and plays some basic drums. He also makes his own beats on his rap songs

For REN, this was truly his reality. Misdiagnosed with Lyme disease for 7 years by conventional doctors who deemed him mentally ill, but when patients are experiencing neurological symptoms, they very often become misdiagnosed. Lyme disease can present itself as many neurological conditions including Acute Transverse Myelitis[3], Ptosis[4], Seizures, and Chronic Fatigue[1] and these symptoms can be often misdiagnosed or deemed psychosomatic. Second is dealing with the symptoms of Lyme neuroborreliosis, these neurological symptoms often leave patients feeling drained and debilitated as they begin losing their quality of life. Over time, patients find themselves unable to do the things they love as they struggle to get ahead of their progressing symptoms

Hey Andrea, I have been watching you for years with Dimash. I only discovered Ren last week and to me he is another amazing singer. Please react to The tale of Jenny and Screech, a Violets tale. Watch the full version and you will see the full package from singing, to guitar, to story telling. There is also a version of him singing Chalk out lines by himself with his band The big push.

Have only watched this reaction from her but I don't think "the Tales" is a good recommendation , she likes vocalists, it's her thing.
"tales" is amazing storytelling but very dark and challenging subject matter, I don't think she will get it.
If Andrea does react to it, it will make fascinating viewing.
Andrea if you are reading, for Ren's singing: "How to be me" live, "Crutch" , "humble" , "Do you believe"
"Wade in the water/Nina Simone" sung with The Big Push (his band)

Ren has so much more material, not all of them rip you apart but he has so much depth its an incredible journey.......Crutch, Humble (ft. Eden Nash), Ocean (ft Eden Nash).....and the list goes on, haven't even mentioned his Rap/Hip Hop, and his earlier stuff with Big Push, or Trick the Fox material......I would also encourage you to watch Chinchilla's Elements.....I can't believe its taken me so long to find these guys

They cover a Beyoncé / Drake cover you may like and she has a single, “Finger’s “ live version that’s amazing. Ren has some older tracks like “Patience l M.E.” and “ Diazepam” although 5 songs in 5 months, I won’t hold my breath. 😏

Ren has another live version of this when busking, where he sings the entire song himself. I love that one much more. Props to Chincilla but I only want to hear Ren. You mentioned they have different tone but they blended well together. This reminds me of Pentatonix. You have 5 very different voices and tones and they magically blend. I think the success for these two is the dissimilarity of tone that blends.

Good detailed reaction you said your not a duet fan.....
You have many great suggestions and you should look into his full back catalogue several duets with chinchilla, eden Nash, Bibi and Sam . An old favourite is Patients 2016 ME a simple beautiful song just him and a guitar.. that hit home.
He is emotional and thought provoking love his lyrics and music styles as well as his skill with instruments.
If you like a tragedy he wrote a trilogy Jenny and Screech full version off his channel 👍
Comes with violets tale best done as one Jenny, Screech and violet. Better than Netflix 🔥 ✌️❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
