Couldn’t agree more with you Scott. Getting into Jazz has been a journey for me and picking up titles that I have never listened to before and finding that I absolutely love them. That makes me dive deeper and deeper. Loving the adventure and keep asking myself -how did I not listen to Jazz earlier in my life. It’s channels like yours that help people like me who are just getting into Jazz. Thanks again. Another great video.

Your welcome, and your comment means so much to me. I'm kind of going out on a limb with the jazz videos because I'm admittedly no expert, but I decided to just be candid and present it as what it is. A relative newcomer to jazz sharing the journey with others on a similar path. I'm glad you're getting something out of them and appreciate your support! Your perspective is always welcome here!

Great video. I too bought just the mono. I can't believe how often you say things that align with my own thoughts or attitudes. I try to listen, watch, read, the classics even if they're not in my wheel house or particularly accessible material, in my attempts to understand why they're classics.
Citizen Kane, A Love Supreme, 100 Years of Solitude....all fit the bill, and now I love them all. Keep up the great work!

I am not a book collector, but actually right AFTER college I was working on a sort of isolated job and decided to read "all the books I should have read by now" (some were assignments in school that I'd blown off/cliff notes) On The Road, Slaughterhouse 5, Gatsby, 100 Years Of Solitude, Hemingway, Steinbeck, The Fountainhead, Confederacy of Dunces, etc... So I got caught up and can now vouch that they are classics for a reason! lol 😆 Right?!

I also have the ‘97 stereo pressing and because of that only got mono - just like you! I never see people talk about those ‘97 reissues, I have Blue Train and Speak No Evil and like them both - I did think they were all analogue though. So the big difference between the ‘97 and TP mono that I noticed was the piano, I think it is more forward and defined in the Tone Poet, so this will be my go to copy

I've been "umming and aahing" about whether to go for the mono or stereo on this record. You (and a few other commentators) are making me seriously consider the mono over the stereo - though it would be nice to have the booklet and extra tracks.....

  • @crispincrunch2453

Good call getting the mono vs the stereo. Kinda surprised people seem to have forgotten about the ‘Kind of Blue’ mono from 2013. That, ‘Giant Steps’ and especially The Beatles catalog… really tough going back to those early versions of “stereo”.
This video made me very curious about hearing mono ‘Blue Train’ now. Especially with your comments on the quality quietness of the pressing. You’re absolutely right. If this quality is available for $40, there really isn’t a compelling reason for other inflated market pricing… other than profits and willing buyers.

I think you'll be VERY impressed with the vinyl and pressing quality. I have a lot of new records arrive here and many are touting their vinyl formulations. Here, a typical Tone Poet/RTI pressing has surpassed basically everything I've heard in terms of silent vinyl. Talk about black backgrounds!

Don't forget that Joe Harley stated that he prefers stereo 😊 But, I know it does come down to preference. BTW, I just happened to snag the MOV mono version of Kind of Blue, and with my system, I am NOT a mono person (I don't think I can post links here to pictures of my system, but it is primarily comprised of two tall multi-driver open baffle dipole line-arrays, 13 drives a side + 2-15" dipole woofers, bi-amped) But, I must admit that I really like the MOV mono KOB pressing (I also just received the UHQR 45, so I'll hafta see about that! 😁) But the MOV mono pressing of Kind of Blue, although likely digitally sourced, actually sounds quite good on my system. There is nice space in the soundstage, particularly front to back, and the drums come across more strongly. I was quite surprised. Out of about 2500 vinyl albums and over 40 years of pretending to be an Audiophile, this one and the excellent and very much superiour mono Abbey Road Disraeli Gears, are my only two deliberately purchased mono pressings.

@@latheofheaven 1. Dang, bruv that line array, open baffle, dipole system sounds and looks epic!
      2. Glad other people appreciate that KOB mono pressing too. Was reading Fremer’s column about it from 2013 and apparently there was all kinds of extrapolation done to achieve the mono since apparently the original mono master no longer exists(??). But really who cares? If 2022 has taught us anything about pure analogue vs digital is: just go with whatever sounds great to yer ears, heart, turntable & stylus 😆 cheers

I know another known vinyl person mentioned that Joe Harley 'Doesn't like mono', which is indeed interesting. If both masters are done well, I guess it would just come down to preference. And YES! Could you tell if its Coltrane playing if someone was playing a record of his you were not familiar with, and lets say you walked into a record store and heard it playing? We recognize faces instantly, we recognize sounds almost instantly, but can we recognize and identify someone's style of playing an instrument well enough to do that? I guess it would depend on how distinctly they play. Or it may take a while before you are 100% sure; or not 100% sure. Blue Trane to me is a nice jazz album. I don't think its covers any new ground or is particularly distinctive.
I think that's what makes Kind Of Blue, a recording Coltrane played on, special. Its distinctive somehow. I did watch a video of some guy who compared all kind of UHQR and modern audiophile pressings with the original mono. He said the mono has a more intimate sound than any any of the modern re-presses. Some people in his comments section agree. Now if I could only know what they mean by intimate sounding. Low level detail? What?

So the next time I play it I'll know who's who. I love that track. I have had a hard time getting into several albums that are supposed to be real classics including A Love Supreme and Bitches Brew. The Shape Of Jazz To Come by Ornette Coleman must be too advanced for me also. There are so so many classic Jazz Fusion lps. Jazz Fusion is generally more distinctive and I slightly prefer it. There was a very knowledgeable guy doing a video on here recently about what he thought were the 10 essential jazz fusion albums. He put Mahavishnu Orchestras album The Inner Mounting Flame at #1. Believe it or not that's another one that didn't strike me on first or second listen. But he's not the only one to nominate that one, so I will definitely give it more listens
