These things invaded my yard this year, and when I tried to find out what they were, the first thing I found was the Giant Asian Hornet. Its sting can kill even if you're not allergic. I wasn't happy about that. Fortunately, the Giant Asian Hornet is only found in Japan. This is a great video. I really enjoyed your other one too. I've started taking some video and photos of mine that I may post. Today I filmed a female trying to get a large cicada between the boards of my deck without much luck.
ive been mowing lawns for about 15 years now and never really noticed them before this year the population seems to be on the rise ive seen them everywhere this year
Well, I'm not sure I want my "appetite wetted" for that sort of thing..lol But thanks for the video. I just discovered these Wasps when sitting on a local beach here in Chicago. I am a amateur photographer so I took a really good image of it. Then a friend told me what it was, so here I am, doing more research.... :-) Great video.
Are these those large wasps that some call 'Mud Wasps? They burrow into the ground and hunt other insects and drag them in. My mother said she saw a large wasp. It flew past her carrying a cicada and took it right into a hole in her sister's flower garden.
Oh gosh..I saw 2 of these humungous wasps buzzing low in my yard today, in Northern Illinois. Their bodies were as HUGE as cocktail wieners (lol) and seriously freaked me out. My neighbor said she thought that they were cicada killers, but wasn't sure. Thanks to your informative video..I will now tell her that she is correct. eeew..
I had one of those guys in my yard last year. She had dug a very long hole (at least 18" deep) under the driveway, and the sand and dirt was piled up in front with a belly slide like an alligator. It kept the neighborhood kids out of the yard, so that's good. :)
Thanks for having this on here so I could stumble across it. I saw three holes in my garden the other day, and I too thought it was mice or moles. Today, I came across this very wasp in the process of digging a hole. Are the four holes all from one cicada killer I wonder? I'll leave them be, as they don't seem to be aggressive.
Great footage. But note the females are larger than males-- and do all the work as you stated. Fascinating insects. See Prof Chuck Holliday's Cicada Killer page.
@graysonhugh1 my uncle karl did the same thing to ours only he poured karsine or something like that the wasp tried to fly out but it cught on fire to fast
,,,,,after so many years of wondering what this little "A10 Tank Killer" was flying around!!! I've tried so many times to get info but always seemed to get the "Asian Giant Hornet." Lots of them down here in Tennessee. Does the female have different markings from the male? Suckers will even burrow in holes on greens @ golf courses!(spooked da sh#t outta me when I reached for my ball!!) Thanks for the post!!
Did they bother you while you mowed like they did to me. I Used to carry a tennis racket and some spray when I mowed my lawn just to feel safe lol. Never been stung yet either thank god.
Oh god those things must have dug a whole right next to my front door. there are like 15 or more of them just zoomin around and we have to leave through the back door. I keep telling my mom too call someone but she wont :<
@NAVY16 - Being that I have a deadly allergy to bees I'm probably going to need intense therapy after seeing that massive thing. Well, I guess it's nightmares for me tonight.
The good thing about them is that they don't sting nearly at all. There are pictures I've seen of humans getting REALLY close to them and they don't even bother with them. They say the only way they'd sting is if you'd grab them or stomp them. The local nature preserve says that they haven't received a single sting notification. On top of all that they're just so damn fast that there's really no chance you'd get close to em. I know I won't!
I was out picking a tomato today and HOLY COW! This HUGE thing drops at my feet. I thought it was just a cicada landing badly, but it was upside down and being flown (carried) by this 1.5 inch monster wasp! It scared me half to death! While I am a nature lover, I had to kill that wasp!. My young son enjoys picking tomatoes with me and I didn't feel like hunting this monster AFTER he was already stung! Yikes!
Thank you for posting this video. One day I heard a commotion up a pine tree. A big wasps flew down with a cicada and crashed into my husband. I thought I was seeing things until Google informed me of cicada killer wasps.
I used to have one of these living in my backyard for about a year. I let em stay and we kinda became pals. I'd smoke em out with some herb and he'd go and kill any flying insect that came near. A ruthless magnificent being.....and a total pothead
Yeah, you might be right. Chances are she might perceive them as 'Mud Wasps' because they burrow. But chances are they're probably cicada killers. I guess depending on where you're from you call things all kinds of things. Like how some call wood roaches "waterbugs". Oh how wrong they are.
half of my backyard is filled with these burrows. pest control are so fed up with these things that they do not service people who ask to take care of these things.
Aint nature cool? I caught a cicadda in the South of France when I was about 10 years old. The little fecker ripped my hand apart! Their back legs are like razor saws, I'll never do that again!
When I first moved in my house I cut the grass really low. The first year I just saw them fly around. The 2nd year they started making nests. Their about 2 inches long and pretty scary looking wasps. The female is larger than the male btw. They're supposed to be pretty docile wasps, but bears are docile also.. :) I poured gasoline down their holes to kill them at night because I'm deathly afraid of them. Wasp killer didn't do anything for it..
I was sitting in my driveway with my friends when out of the blue we heard a cicada chirp louder than usual. We looked up and on queue came a cicada falling towards the ground. With better examination we saw the massive wasp stinging the hell outta it. We killed the wasp but the cicada slowly died and paralyzed.
Does each wasp make their own burrow? Because I was walking home with my mom from Dairy Queen once and I looked down at the ground on the grass and I noticed these holes that looked just like this, and then I looked beside my foot and there was a HUGE wasp coming out from the hole and it startled me, so I ran away and it was a parking lot and a car probably would have hit me if they hadn't looked in my direction before turning. And my mom was like "you have to be careful!" and I'm like "oh my gosh there was a HUGEE wasp at my foot" and I was too scared at the time to go back and show her, but we said we'd walk by there again so I could show her. It was then about a month later that my she, my sister and I went walking past that area again, and the multiple holes were in the ground, but there were no wasps to be seen. I live in southern Ontario, Canada. I've googled it and apparently they *can* live here. I fear wasps, and after seeing that huge one right beside my foot (when I had a croc on!), I am absolutely terrified. If anyone has any more information about these wasps, preferably information about them in Canada, that'd be great. Thank you.
Hmm, therein lies the problem with common names. Sometimes two people can be talking about the same thing but use different names. Names can be misleading, like "ladybug" instead of "ladybird beetle." Some say "common names are for common people". ~_^
they can sting and the female has venom. if you have a health problem like allergies to penicillin or you have diabetes it can turn fatal. but they are not aggressive towards humans
Wasting a .45 ACP round on a cicada killer wasp would be rather silly. Considering that it is interesting to watch them bring cicadas to their nests where the larvae will devour the hapless host while it is still alive! Oh my god! Feel the sarcasm.! I love the .45 ACP but shooting insects with it is a no go. The cicada killer wasp is mostly harmless to us so please put that 1911 .45 pistol back into it's holster and grab a macro lens on a video camera.
One Wasp is fine, but in two years there were 20 borrowing into my patio. Zooming around like the floor was moving. Crazy! I hate killing them but they dont stop.
my entire patio is sinking in two years. The hummingbirds chase them around the yard. I know what you mean, but thats the reality. thats how many I have. I hate killing things too, even my business name is DesignAnts! I think they are almost done for the season now.
Great video. However, you need to be careful where you place that rat poisen. Dogs, cats, birds and other unintended wildlife can be lethally poisoned. You should have put it into the hole ( very small piece and not nearly as much as you have placed) if you thought is was a mouse. Rat poison is very potent and it can even kill scavenger animals that feed off of the poisoned carcasses.
One year these were all over my Grandpa's yard destroying the Cicadas. I actually watched on grab a Cicada out of the air and sting it as the fell to the grass. I found some cicada shells and filled 3 of them with wasp and hornet spray. I put them near the burrows and within seconds 3 of the wasps came out and dragged the shells down into their holes. The next day there were still cicadas everywhere, but no wasps. I have never seen any after that.
Thanks so much for posting!!! This video helped my daughter and I confirm what we have flying around in our backyard!!! Great video!!!

Good job on the vid. i appreciate people who take their time to share info properly.
Most Informative video I have seen to date. "Thanks"
Very informative video. Thanks!

great video! thank you for sharing!
thnx for taking ur time to entertain us, ur great
Well done!
Excellent camerawork. I wonder if an electronic buzz will keep those things away. They come to my house every summer in mid-July for 30 days.

Gread video! Very well done.
One of the most intimidating-looking wasps, but surprisingly one of the least threatening.
Thanks so much for posting this. I didn't know what the hell we had burrowing into our yard, but now do...ugh!!
Interesting, well done and informative.
Another video would be awesome.
we have these things all over michigan man. harmless little things

your voice is so intresting
where do these things live
geez those things give me the creeps!!!

What is the best product to kill these? i tried ammonia doesnt seem to be working.
please help. Thanks
"Its quite a large object that she's going to have to drag down that hole." "Giggity."
There's Tons In My Yard. I Can't Get Rid Of Them! My Yard Looks Like A Battlefield
Oh god those things must have dug a whole right next to my front door. there are like 15 or more of them just zoomin around and we have to leave through the back door. I keep telling my mom too call someone but she wont :<

Watch 7887yoyoyo ...... They are FRICKEN HILARIOUS
They don't really sting unless you are rough with them.
The good thing about them is that they don't sting nearly at all. There are pictures I've seen of humans getting REALLY close to them and they don't even bother with them. They say the only way they'd sting is if you'd grab them or stomp them. The local nature preserve says that they haven't received a single sting notification. great!
hell yeah so would i
this is why its not safe to go outside anymore, where did they come from? sorry my sound wasnt working
While these wasps look frightening, they're actually harmless to people, as a few others have already mentioned...
no these things chase me, everytime time i get near them
I was out picking a tomato today and HOLY COW! This HUGE thing drops at my feet. "Itchy, dry eyes."

That is one mean looking wasp. Mothra indeed.
@suicidetomatoe Yes, but it's not common

geeeeez i never go to my backyard again
Hahaha! That's an interesting way to put it. :)
I would fucking flip out if I saw a wasp that size!
half of my backyard is filled with these burrows. pest control are so fed up with these things that they do not service people who ask to take care of these things.
I don't want to leave my house anymore...
Aint nature cool? I caught a cicadda in the South of France when I was about 10 years old. The little fecker ripped my hand apart! Their back legs are like razor saws, I'll never do that again!
1:27 That's what she said!
i don't think so

"The female can sting, but the male cannot" That's true for humans too lol
them things are evil , alot of times people mistaken a cicadi killer with a european wasp.
interesting

hey, looks a bit like that weird 5cm wasp i recorded...
My brother is off fighting dragons, I'm filming wasps.
.
that doesn't look like anthing inapropriet at all
As long as I don't have to touch it... watching it is fine.
Do not kill them. They’re harmless.

and heres a close up of mothra emerging!
holy! That's what those holes are? OMG. I had no idea. i want to die now
looks like a mole cricket
Omg I think this is what's in my sink. Dear lord help me.
they can sting and the female has venom. if you have a health problem like allergies to penicillin or you have diabetes it can turn fatal. but they are not aggressive towards humans

SQUISH IT!!!
Nope Nope Nope
lol
Um, why did you not remove the rat poison once you realized it was a wasp nest?
Weaveuh Um, would YOU shove your hand down that hole??
who cares..get rid of Cicada
That's like saying "Kill any human you see because they're too biologically successful!"
