    How us Europeans design flags:
    Option A - tricolor
    Option B - cross
    Option C - cool coat of arms

      i guess it was a lot of work to redesign shit whenever someone would take over again, then it's the spanish, then it's the french, back and forth again, then it's the germans, ain't nobody got time for doing flags lol

    • @ShadowFalcon
      @ShadowFalcon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Technically, Option A should be the cross, since the Scandinavian Cross is older than the Tricolour by a few hundred years :P

    • @arx3516
      @arx3516 5 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@ShadowFalcon the cross was used by basically everyone and their cousin in the middle ages, and as such it was seen as representative of the old feudal order, Tricolors however were a new alternative representative of the secular nature of modern republics. Scandinavian flags however have a distinctive feature, the cross isn't centered, it's on the left, that's how for example you can distinguish the Verona's flag from the swedish one, the veronese flag has its cross centered.

    • @ShadowFalcon
      @ShadowFalcon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes, but the Scandinavian Cross (or rather, the Dannebrog, which uses the Scandinavian Cross) is still the oldest national flag, still used today.

The black, white, red Imperial flag always has a nationalist connotation too.

      I'd never really thought about it before, but you're right. It could just be by association, although I do think it's more than that: red-white-black is a very "cold" combination of colours (and one that, moreover, doesn't seem ever to have been used very widely, except in a few Middle Eastern instances). It's noteworthy that the Nazis -- I think, very deliberately -- used the same colours in their design of the German Hakenkreuz (swastika) flag.

    The white in the Irish flag represents the Catholic Papacy. Thus you have orange (protestantism), green (Ireland itself) and white (Catholicism). One could say it was an attempt to unify the newly independent nation along lines that weren't religious.
    My protestant Irish/English/Norman ancestors were sent packing off to Canada in 1835 in rather violent terms. It seems to me the new Irish flag was trying mend the historic divisions.

    The French flag did not copy the Dutch flag. The Revolutionaries merged together the flag of Paris : a vertical stripe of blue and a vertical stripe of red, with the white color of the House of Bourbon. This was made to represent the union of the King and the people when France was a constitutional monarchy between 1789 and 1792. This is documented.

Oh, and we also tried a flag with the crests of the 4 marinary republics, which is now used for the marines if I'm not wrong.

    Your claim that all the flags of "slavonic" countires are based on russian flag is... simplification, to say the least. E.g. czech flag is based on historcal coat of arms of kingdome of bohemia - silver lion on red background - plus blue wedge added for moravia. That other people label it as "slavic tricolor" later is another matter.

But still it is important to know the origin and development. Many explanations are implemented ex post to serve various political goals.

      @@Hildigis well, it is true that blue-white-red combination is pan-slavic. however, there is one funny trivia. first serbian flag was red-white-blue (just as modern croatian) back in 1835, but both turkey and russia were unhappy with that solution, it reminded them too much on french flag that was fallen on the side. So, they recombined the colors into todays red-blue-white and imposed upon us. No one saw, or cared that it was literally russian flag upside-down!
