So I went to my LFS local fish store and he had 3 marine Puffer fish, I text my wife to see which ones we can get and to my surprise she said all 3!
Tetraodontidae is a family of primarily marine and estuarine fish of the order Tetraodontiformes. The family includes many familiar species variously called pufferfish, puffers, balloonfish, blowfish, blowies, bubblefish, globefish, swellfish, toadfish, toadies, honey toads, sugar toads, and sea squab.
The majority of them are marine-water fishes (read: require a salt water aquarium). However, there are 40 types of puffer fish found in brackish waters (a mix of salt and fresh water), and 29 species are found in freshwater. Pufferfish can vary from two inches to up to several feet in length.
Large species of fish make the best tank mates. Tangs, angels, eels, engineer gobies, foxfish, and squirrelfish all make good tank mates for the puffer. Medium sized fish that get along well with balloonfish include hawkfish, large clownfish, and wrasses. Puffers are different. The small species are often too aggressive or nippy to be mixed with fish of similar size, but are themselves likely to be threatened by substantially larger tankmates. The bigger puffers are usually predatory as well, and they make risky additions to community tanks.
Most puffers are found in tropical and subtropical ocean waters, but some species live in brackish and even fresh water. Some species of pufferfish are considered vulnerable due to pollution, habitat loss, and overfishing, but most populations are considered stable.
Almost all puffer fish contain tetrodotoxin, a substance that makes them foul tasting and often lethal. To humans, tetrodotoxin is deadly, up to 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide. There is enough toxin in one puffer fish to kill 30 adult humans, and there is no known antidote. How Lethal Is the Poison in Fugu? Very high! More than 60% of all fugu poisonings will end in death. After the toxin has been consumed, you have less than sixty minutes to get respiratory treatment which is your only hope in surviving the effects of this powerful poison.
A puffer's neurotoxin is not necessarily as toxic to other animals as it is to humans, and puffers are eaten routinely by some species of fish, such as lizardfish and sharks.
