What an epic undertaking! It’s so interesting how this is like harmonic version of polyrhythmic percussion. I’m really looking forward to seeing the final result :)
Thank you Christian for spreading the word. Today we are sending the first 10.000 Euros to the cause. Thanks to all the people to join in. The last two days in Italy, the situation seemed to get a bit better, so we may hope to see an end in all of this. Considering that the curve of Italy will likely overlap with the other countries to, anyone may be able to predict how the situation changes in his country by comparing the curves. Stay safe!
This whole thing is an amazing idea and I imagine an amazing amount of work as well. Thank you and everyone who contributed. Can't wait to hear the final result.
I am excited to see how this plays out...just a couple of weeks before the whole virus deal we did a short reading of In C in one of my music classes. It was so interesting to take part in and was what drove me actually do this contribution. Though mine was incredibly simple...I still loved it.
I believe if we are to use the terms "minimalism" and "systems" music, there are two main differences. Minimalism is seen as a period within the classical music scene. Typically minimalist composers are considered to be that of Steve Reich, John Adams, and Phillip Glass. All notated music. Systems music to myself is more of an approach to minimalism through a purely technological means. The ideas and timbres of instruments are 100% technology...synths per say. This is a great video by the way!
Your patch reminded me of Laraaji's contribution to Eno's Ambient series (#3, "Day of Radiance"). My favorites from Reich, in addition to the 18 musicians, are the later pieces, Music for Large Ensemble and the first version of the Octet. Desert Music is also a great piece; reminiscent of Music for 18 Musicians.
I'm humbled to have had the opportunity to take part in this. This is a massive project and I know you've got your work cut out for you. But I'm envious as well. The task of merging the input from 381 composers into a single piece of music is daunting to say the least, but incredibly exciting, rewarding, and--dare I say--fun. I can't wait for March 28. :)
Cool, think I just done the same in Reaper with two tracks and Reapers Megababy sequencer on each track with synth on each with 32 steps on one & 31 on the other and stuff me senseless, it worked!
Excellent presentation Christian. In my classes to simulate this I have students create a session with 8 FM8 synths and use the onboard sequencer on each FM8 to create a sequence of differing lengths. A bit more cumbersome than having everything on a piece of hardware but still effective.
Airline pilots have nothing on you, Christian! Not only do you have to know how everything works, but you actually BUILT that Frankensynth! I love this video - the Systems Music - I've never heard of it before, nor have I seen anything like it. I'm going to experiment with something like this now.....thank you so much for this video!
Super cool! Isn't this just process music? I literally was just typing out this comment and was going to mention Steve Reich just as you did, wasn't sure I was on the same page! Really nice stuff :)
Fantastic. I really hope mine from yesterday afternoon (albeit technically after the deadline) made it. A nice distraction from isolation - it definitely feels like this thing has taken on a more profound and relevant quality given current events. There’s a lot of good about on TH-cam, Instagram, even twitter(!) at the moment with regard to virtual and real-world solidarity, support and collaboration, so this will arrive at a very appropriate time.
looks like systems music has a lot in common with generative music, the generative software I like to use has a lot of the same concepts, like cells and such
4/4 + 15/16, over everything else in 4/4 = always a good time! Polymetric partay (creating polyrhythmic effect). Check out Pat Metheny's version of Reich's "Electric Counterpoint," if you haven't already.
One question I find interesting is "how do distinguish between 'good' systems music and 'bad' systems music?" Would love your thoughts on that some time!
@@charlesgaskell5899 "better"? Why? It's not a competiton. There should not be "good" or "bad" in art/music... If something was done with intent, and you like it, it's good. Seems simple to me...
I think that is it really. You could rephrase it as Does it delight me? Or does it interest me? One of the things I find refreshing about generative music it is that 'composer ego' is largely absent. And yet listening to it can be a very emotional experience at times.
I guess I’ve been making systems music (occasionally) for about 30 years. Just didn’t know what to call it. Most of mine is in just intonation or some other “alternate tuning,” though.
Phraselet. Such a good word! Nice hints of your Inside No 9 Magicians episode music too. Another cracking video. Free iOS apps for music making? Awesome! I can’t wait for the final systems piece.
Interesting. I think though, that systems music, the way you describe it, is an approach to playing minimal music. I find it hard to say that systems music is minimal music since you can also use systems music (or generative composition techniques) to create non minimal music, right?
I know I'm being a crybaby, but I see that no one has watched my shitty entry! 😭😭😭😢. It took foreeeeeeever to upload, because I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to video. It was up around seven in the morning on the 21. Pretty please with cream and a cherry on top can it also be included? If your pianoday project wasn't here to take my mind off of things (I'm in quarantine in Tyrol), I'd start chewing the shoes and furniture by now. Yes, I am a dog. Luckily, my wife is very good with dogs ♥️ Wouldn't it be a great idea after this to take all these recordings and rearrange them into 88 minutes? Also: does Kellen (?) Have a TH-cam channel?
Sitting on pins and needles! Anybody know what the origins of that saying is? Your shed is looking more and more packed Christian. You may need an oxygen scrubber soon.
This is just ethnic music. We do this all the time especially the tribals musicians here. . Without synths and othet electronic stuff. The way we play it is the same you describe it and live....

Ooooft what a belter 💚 thanks for using my piece :) really shocked!!!!!
A HUGE undertaking: thank you SO much to everyone working on this in the background... :-)
Christian, thanks so much for your hard work, altruism, and general infectious good vibe!
Glad to be part of these 381 marvellous artists. What a brilliant effort.Let's hope we don't get a "system error" :)))

Fair play Christian, I’m loving what your doing for music, musicians and fellow composers....your a good person.

Wow! 381 submissions! I think this must definitely be the world’s largest systems piece. Thank you, Christian and Kalen, you absolute legends

The way this evolved with all the layers, brought ISAN to my mind for some reason

So delighted to be part of this huge act of collaboration. I think someone should contact Guinness World Records :)
Yay! Great production and video. I'm happy and honored that my squishy bloopies are the opening :) :)
This is really excellent.
Sounding wonderful and adventurous:)
I cannot wait to hear the result!
If these were drum sounds running in & out of phase it would sound like the polyrhythms in African drumming.
All drum traditions have polyrhythms...
I'm so excited.... I hope I make a cut
Very inspiring idea. I am going to give it a go!

17:00 GMT on Saturday as per the video - or 15:00 as stated above? Don't want to miss it!

woohoo! so excited! 🤓

It is all starting to sound truly amazing now!
Good luck with the mixing and a truly amazing job you are both doing too!
How do I use Spitfire Labs on linux?
There is just no way you know what those 10,458 knobs do!
@around 4:30... cells within cells, you doing your own baseline test there?
Can somebody recommend good Systems Musicians?
Start with 'In C' by Terry Riley
I'm sure that this has become a U2 song! NIce patch.

Can I send in a late submission? Had issues with youtube and I couldn't get it submitted. Cheers1

If ‘minimalism’ is a hated term then ‘systems music’ is worse. Ultra pseud-ey
