Yes! This is great, and is exactly what I've been exploring over the past few months - making music with anything. Music is in every sound around us and sampling, analyzing waveforms and editing them to bring out those qualities is really exciting.
Another wonderful video, Christian. Your creative drive is very apparent, especially in this video. Found, and created, sounds are what make sampled music the art form that it is meant to be. On another note, I can see that your body has been shedding excess weight, so hearing that you’ve stopped drinking makes sense. I no longer do… at one point in my life I thought I always would (this from a former homebrewer)… so cheers to you. Continued success to you and TCHC!
Your enthusiasm is just lovely. I have a cheap microphone and I make libraries for myself just because it is amazing to put it into an SFZ text file and it makes magic happen.
Thank you for this comment. I had never heard of SFZ but after some googling and a couple of youtube videos I now have a fun weekend project ahead of me :)
@@mileslinus Oh fantastic. I love Decent Sampler and the old SFZ format. It's difficult to get help on SFZ, but a few people have put out some tutorials and instruments you can study. It's just a text file that harnesses MIDI features with samples. I've created my own ones, but I still have a few things I need to understand why they don't work. It could be a general MIDI issue. There are so many things you can do directly in an SFZ instrument. Vibrato, tremolo, chorus, etc. If you remind me, I'll get you some links. Currently working :)
Good message! This is the reason I got an MPC One--to sample and resample, and autosample the Neutron. Was very keen to begin with and then overwhelmed by the power of it and seemingly endless possibilities. Procrastination has set in harder than limescale. Got to get back to the simple things.
Sampling is indeed so much fun! And you can really turn any sound into whatever you need. The best sounds I have, are the ones recorded with a "bad" microphone outdoors in the worst conditions possible. It never fails to give a good result for sound design!
this inspired me to start sampling in my own daw now, thanks a lot for showing the process, i always thought its way harder but its so much fun, thank you so much Christian!
Christian ... I know ... EVERY SINGLE VIDEO you make is LOADED with most valuable information. So: Feel youself hugged (once again) for this one. Not only for the information itself but also for the motivation it gives us to make something. Kind regards (and your fan forever for "Alien Isolation").
I like the sound of your ring and it's unique. Occasionally I do recordings when I hear interesting sounds in the world like locomotives, doors, wind, etc.. even with my cell they come out decent. And true the sky is the limit sampled into a daw
2:50 EQ out that second harmonic for each note or convert it into a wave table and use the editor in serum or vital (Free!) to notch out that harmonic. Of course you know this, this is more for everyone else.
This is really cool. I'm using Adobe Audition, will have to look more into it to see how to create samples. Kind of reminds me of a Hans Zimmer methodology on the Dune soundtrack where he's like, "alright, let's find the sound of wind whistling through ancient sand on an alien world" and really does get it "right"
Hold down option and click to add an audio effect in the usual place where you do it, for example where you click to add a plug and legacy options will show up in the list and there's a denoiser plugin there along with others. Don't ask me why they have hidden this, but all I know is a guy called David Tobin taught me that trick.
Lovely. I was listening to the fantastic Doom PS1 soundtrack by Aubrey Hodges. It's sound really resonated with me as a kid and still does. The weird, ethereal stretched lo-fi samples creating those otherworldly dark soundscapes and textures. I wrote an albums worth of stuff for a library heavily inspired by that soundtrack. I recorded waterfalls in iceland, i recorded the sound of "nothing" in iceland (or anywhere) and when you bump a large boost of a frequency, then resample, play it on the keyboard and you're playing that natural atmosphere as an instrument. Go down 4 octaves and you've got hell. Very fun! Also as working on a bowed bass guitar loop library but never finished it... i'd love to start it againa and finish it at some point. Time is short...
I take all kind of little sound bits from everywhere I can think off, and start processing them into new sounds to play in my compositions. I'm not even recording them anymore. It could be YOU talking in this video and me taking a little random nib of one of your words; putting it in the sampler, stretching it, morphing it, squeezing it thru effect plugins like Infiltrator to finally be ending up with a very useful and on keyboards playable 'tone from scratch'.
I recently made a kalimba sounding instrument out of a glass lamp shade because I really loved the natural resonance of it, I'll see what I can do about sending it
Totally agree on creating your own sounds or at least tweaking sounds you purchased to make them your own-- so many ways. How are you in Cubase and creating your own sounds as fast as you do in Logic with stock plugins? I am still learning that sometimes the DAW plugins are as powerful as 3rd party ones. Would love to see a video like this using Cubase some day!
Can Paul come around, Christian. How about for Christmas, yall get together like old times, have some laughs, and talk music before Wishing each other well? 🎄 🌟
Very interesting and a lot of inspiration. Ok, I bought some soundsets for my synths. But a lot of the sounds I´m using (!) are own sounds made from scratch. I have to admit that some of those sounds are tries of "cloning" sounds I like. And very often there are some "incidents" that leads me to my own kind of sound ... not the original sound wanted but nevertheless I like them 😉. And don´t forget ... creating sounds can be a very relaxing and joyful "task".
Very cool and creative sampling approach. FWIW, I used a similar, but much less sophisticated technique for my "SPLOSHILATOR" (see what I did there?) Audio Inc submission. 🙂 -Rob
I’m currently in a mic purchasing crisis, as “cheap” as an SM57 might be to a professional, as a hobbyist it’s still an expensive mic and I have budget for one only. My understanding is that the SM57 is better for instruments and the SM58 for vocals. I’d want a mic for both, so which is the best all rounder of the two? And am I even going to notice a difference as a musical dunderhead?
They’re exactly the same mic. The 58 has a guard that is designed for live use to prevent pops and the ill effects of spit on the capsule. Live people tend to press their mouths up against the guard which I wouldn’t recommend with the 57. 58 is basically designed for live use. If you gonna use for studio and live get this just studio get the 57.
As someone that makes sounds for a living, I agree it’s fun at times - however sometimes you need sounds created by someone that has dedicated themselves to creating magic in sonic form. 35 years and I’m still going deeper….
Do you want raw sounds or actual finished processed sounds? im guessing its finished sounds but the way you've been explaining the project has me a little unsure.
Hypocracy. You are not the only person to own that wine glass, nor the media within it or the method of production of the sound. Anyone buying the wine glass and the same media inside it would have a reasobale chance of recreating tge sound. No?
Um...you sell sounds, do you not? I've been telling my friends for years, if you field record, if you sample. you may remain a sh*tty musician, but your sounds will be literally something no one else has ever heard, and something no one else can ever have. Already a better proposition than a Serum patch, no?
Completely agree with you, sounds hypocritical. I mean Spitfire literally has made dozens of libraries basically selling soundscape sounds. Oh and btw it’s not only a thing for beginners, every pro makes (and for me should make) his own sounds. Think for example a genius like Johann Johannsson, still no one sounds like him.
@ I think you vindicate my view. If you’ve got 100 bucks to spend I think it’s far better spent on a mic than commercial sounds. All that can come later when you don’t have the time to roll your own.
"I may come across like I know what I'm doing. I don't. Just play." brilliant!
This is truly inspiring, Christian! Makes it exciting again to create new sounds, back to the playground. Thanks for that, I needed this!💟💟

Joined a fellowship? Gave up drinking? Good for you, man!
I could listen to Christian for days. Inspiring.
This is awesome man, thank you for the inspiration, making a soundscape from a flick on a wine glass, masterful 👌

Did you see they completely overhauled the OS and it has a different interface now?
Thank you for this amazing tutorial using Logic's stock plug ins - shows novices like me how easily we can design sound
Sampling is indeed so much fun! And you can really turn any sound into whatever you need. The best sounds I have, are the ones recorded with a "bad" microphone outdoors in the worst conditions possible. It never fails to give a good result for sound design!
Great video! Very inspiring!
What an amazing teacher you are! And what a great project!
Where there's music, there's harmony. Amen, brother! xxx
Excellent!
I took a door creek yesteday with a comb filter on it - my oh my, what a pleasure to experiment.

Congratulations! I know how hard it is to stop drinking. Wish you all the best and keep up the good work.

I would love to participate in this. I've been sampling sounds for my music a lot recently.
Great video….would love to know more about creating sound bytes but only have Garageband
What are the movie posters behind you?

@ that’s great! Thanks ever so much for replying!
not long since got my self akai s950 sampler maxed out with mods
for its 12 bit filter goodness
Congrats on giving up drinking, maestro.
Sounds like Korg or Oberheim
Spitfire is soon bankrupt, cart is broken

Hello, what is that midi controller with the four sliders called ?
Its a ghostnote controller. Similar to the AMC3 controller.
Thank you for those , did not know about them. I found another that is much suited for my needs : Intech Studio PBF4.
Seek Christ. Find harmony and peace for your soul in Him.
And don't fall for the cheapo "SM57", which isn't an SM57 at all.
Can anyone recommend a decent field recorder?
Tascam FR-AV2. The 32-bit float seems to be a handy/convenient recording option. Zoom F6 has 32-bit also - more expensive but very popular.
I use a Zoom h1n - cheap and does a decent job!
Redundant? I'm horrified.
So…. What happened to “I switched to Cubase” then?😂
congratulations on stopping the booze
Very inspiring thanks!!!
What kind of fader control is the one (with 3 faders) on you desk?
Its a ghostnote controller. Similar to the AMC3 controller
@ but What model?
