Probably because he never defended either belt and hasn't held gold since 2016. He not a prime fighter anymore; a shell of his former self.

Eddie beat Justin Gaethje after Eddie loss his belt to Conor also, Conor didn't deserve a title fight at Lightweight, Khabib did. Imagine losing to Nate Diaz at welterweight then barely beat Nate Diaz, yet you get the title shot, instead of the person who beat RDA, while Nate Diaz loss to RDA. Beating Jose at Featherweight doesn't mean you deserve a title shot at Lightweight.

I wish ufc would let Conor fight 3 times this year so he can get back in the groove of things. Conor is and will always be the Notorious 1. And 1st true champ,champ.
As a follower of MMA since 2003, his run for the belt in the FW belt in UFC was absolutely breath taking. Him knocking out Aldo in 13 seconds. Despite not liking it at the moment, that he didn't decide to go defend his FW belt straight away. It all made sense from a marketing standpoint, every new fight had to be bigger then the last.
Fighting Nate Diaz at welterweight was a bad idea and he paid for it. It ended his era of invincibility. Also his close rematch victory of Diaz at LW didn't erase that.
Yet as the biggest superstar in the UFC he got a titleshot at LW and performed about as a good as during his Aldo fight. Absolute fighting art.
After he won the LW belt he again didn't defend his belt and opted to go for the Mayweather fight. A fight he performed pretty damn well, unless you believe the Mayweather's "I carried him".
Months spent on boxing only, making like a hundred million in the process.
As great as McGregor's striking is, he never was a great all-round fighter. A determined focused McGregor was a miracle worker.
But despite the absolute talent and skill. Losing his focus, getting into tons of problems, likely drug&alcohol addictions as well. As brilliant as McGregor was on the mic and in the ring. Like many rockstars&celebrities he couldn't handle the fame and everything that came along with it.
He's highly succesful as a businessman and his family is settled for life. But being succesful at the top of MMA needs pure focus and discipline.
Being away from MMA for 2years before defending your belt against the best LW fighter in history. Was bound to go wrong. Off course him being the best is with hindsight information.
The build-up to the fight was drenched in hatred and McGregor showing his bad side.
McGregor moved the sport into mainstream, he put Ireland firmly internationally on the map.
A fighter that was easy to root for in his early UFC run, but over time started to show a nasty and evil side that was a lot harder to identify with.
303 Chandler fight makes a lot of sense. But than after that he seems to have his eyes on a Nate Diaz III fight. Which makes no sense for his stock if he beats Chandler. Nate Diaz hasn't looked good at all. And for his third fight he wants to fight Manny Pacquiao who's retired for like three years by the time they could fight eachother. If this is true, this shows that McGregor once again doesn't focus on the task at hand but is busy with way more than MMA. He's a billionaire but in my humble opinion he's setting himself up for faillure this way.
