The reverse-fisheye effect and dodgy texture mapping are actually things I battled with while writing my own line-based raycaster, it requires a bit of explanation: The way a raycast renderer works is that it fires a ray for each column of the screen, over the FOV in increments of `FOV / screen_width`, using the distance traveled before hitting a wall as the source of the height of the column of pixels on the screen. The problem, is that firing all these rays from a single point directly at a flat surface will produce a curve, where the rays firing off at an angle will produce a higher distance value than the ones towards the middle, this can be corrected after the fact by adjusting the distance value with an equation I can't remember that makes it as if all the rays were fired from points on a line rather than all from a single point. I don't remember what the problem with the texture mapping is, I just know that I fixed it in my renderer by playing about with it until it worked. It really didn't take that much effort.

I love this channel so much I'll watch every video multiple times. Even the old stuff Civvie's ashamed of now, I think is better gaming content than I've seen anywhere else. This is the only place I've gone and felt nostalgia for shit I've never played. I might even watch TV like an old person if this dude was on there. Thanks for keeping me sane for a little while longer!
I have to ask, now that Civvie has played a few 3rd-person shooters, do think he would be up for playing The Punisher and Manhunt 1-2 on the channel? I feel that would be fun, especially considering their shared history of controversy and banning with Postal.
Speaking of 3rd person, I'm wondering if he'll ever play heavy metal fakk2 because quake3 engine completionism. Edit: and because the mosquitos in that game would be ideal for the conditions of his captor's experiment. Excruciating insects and blatant sexualization of the the main character aside, I recall the dual wielding ranged+melee combos made for fun and interesting combat. And some of the world design is pretty cool. I'm also pretty sure the second mission is a sewer level, too. And there's an appropriately terrible swamp section.
@@0v_x0 Ah, that's right. He said he was skipping Mysteries of the Sith. Eh, don't blame him. Even as someone who liked the base game, I thought only the first and last sections (the Katarn part and the Sith Temple part) were really worth playing. All the middle stuff was kinda boring.
If you look at the walls up close and look to the side, the wall doesn't go out of your vision in a normal way, like it doesn't "move to the side" instead in this game when you look to the side, the wall "turns 90 degrees" until it's out of your vision, it's extremely surreal.

Ok, so NO SHIT I saw this game for 6 dollars at a Value Village yesterday and thought "gee, I don't have a Twitter or I would tell Civvie to play this, fucking coward that he is". And here we go
Even the footage of this game hurts to look at. I started getting a headache at 9:29 and had to start taking breaks. How the hell did the developers manage to work through all this?
The most impressive thing about Civvie in this videos, is that he didnt spoke about the terrible sound of the game (Or the lack of it it seems). The sound effects and the sound in general was so bad that civvie didnt even bother talk about it.
This game was one of the first fps games I played. A work friend had gotten into my mother's head and convinced her that doom was too violent. So zero tolerance on genisis was my first (zero tolerance when civvie), then heretic then this. Then finally doom lol
As someone who has been working on a Wolfenstein 3-D remake for the past two years, the part where you follow the enemy who hasn't detected you yet doesn't appear broken to me. He's in patrol mode and you haven't fired your weapon or stepped into his sight cone yet, so he hasn't detected you. Working as intended.
The thing is that enemy lacks vision outside of...whatever the fov of this game is. Like doom enemies can at least see you to their right and left, but this guy doesnt.
Thank you for making this video, Civvie. I saw cheap CD versions of this game as a kid at flea markets and yard sales and have always wondered about it. The gaming press at the time said positive things about the humor and stuff and I liked the enemy designs (I always thought that Dr. Radiaki looked pretty cool), but it looks like such a fucking painful slog to get through that I'm glad I never tried it.
Perhaps the greatest indictment of Dr. Radiaki is that if you type its name in google, it doesn't label it a "video game", as it's supposed to do. It just labels it as "software". It runs on a PC, it's made of code and assets, but whatever it is you can use it for cannot in good faith be called "playing". Self-harm, masochism, voyeurism perhaps, but not playing.
14:20 Ouch. It's botched raycasting, where the distance to viewing point is used instead of distance to viewing plane -- that's why the walls appear to bend away from the player at the screen edges.
It's like they heard about what an FPS was from a friend, but had never actually played one so they designed something similar without the talent to know when their designs needed improvement. Doom from ID being as good as it is really is amazing when they could have made something like this instead.
Fun fact: This game was made by the same developers that went on to make the glorious FMV nightmare known as Harvester.
That takes me back to the Retsupurae days
That game has the perfect amount of based 90s edge. It's a time capsule and I love it.

The way a raycast renderer works is that it fires a ray for each column of the screen, over the FOV in increments of `FOV / screen_width`, using the distance traveled before hitting a wall as the source of the height of the column of pixels on the screen.
Since this game ignores everything DOOM did, that means it may have been more closely inspired by the Ultima series.

Fairly certain H4MMER and AX3 were designed by Dr. Radiaki in a timeline where he's basically Steve Jobs
Boy this is like an evil alternate universe version of ROTT. They both came out after Doom 2 but had a more primitive engine, they both have a bat and similar aesthetics along with militia type human enemies. ROTT has height, but no angles other than 90 degrees, This game has angles, but no height. ROTT has infintie ammo guns, this game has reloading. Where ROTT is manageable jank this is just unfiltered chaos.
Have been waiting for Civvie to slay the giant killer German baby for years. AI not programmed making them like ants with broken receptors.
It's like a trash anti game which is why I thought he needed to play it.

He's right though, Radiaki and Radiation start with the same letters... THAT CAN'T BE A COINCIDENCE!!!
This game tries so hard to reach that "so bad, it's good" status, yet it fails so miserably it's almost funny. Almost.
It's like it reached "So bad it's good status" and then fucking _kept going_ so now it's just bad again.
If it was funny, it would come full circle.
Ohhhh, but if only it could do that...
It probably would have stuck the landing if playing it wasn't such a nauseating, migraine-inducing chore. It's profoundly stupid and goofy in tone. But no one will enjoy experiencing it, much less trying to complete it.

This is the 'hardest to look at' game I've ever seen. The whole thing is FUCKING RAW!
This and Island Peril are comparably hard to look at for me.
It's not even up to the lofty ambition of being raw. The chef just plated a dead and rotting cow.
It an't even raw. The beast is still alive, abit barely.
I actually got a little sick just watching the footage, cant imagine how it must be in game.
It's un-fucking-believable!
That grenade launcher sounds like the sound effect of getting something stuck in a vacuum cleaner.
That's probably what they did to make the sound
It's a fucking stock sound effect. I couldn't believe it when I heard it.
@@expendableround6186 lol yeah I've heard it elsewhere too. It's up there with that one super melodramatic scream that isn't the Wilhelm but is almost as ubiquitous. I was dryly joking, I don't think they had the resources to do actual foley sfx. I've heard that sound in other games, but I'm struggling to think of examples. Worms maybe? I mean plenty of games use sample libraries for some stuff, Doom did, I think half life did too, but this is just so out of place. I laughed at the screen when I heard it. (Actually for this game it's kind of right on tone but that's not a good thing).
You know, I was playing "post void" and thinking "damn, this game is too short for a civvie video, but the migraine it induces because it's cruelty squad on LSD is something I'd love to see in Civvie's channel". Well... At least I got the migraine inducing visuals I was after
Whew. Hearing Lo Wang took me by surprise and then sad since there were news about John William Galt's death just yesterday

He can't stop untill Postal 4 gets a full release or untill he reviews the entire Gex franchise.
Whatever happens first.
But you know what the best part of my day is? It's for about ten seconds from when I open youtube until when I go to Civvie's page. Because I think maybe I'll pull up the page and he won't be there. No goodbye, no see you later, no nothin'. Just left. I don't know much, but I know that.

I wondered when you’d do this one. A mate of mine just straight up gave me his copy of this unprompted when I was at school. Didn’t take me long to figure out why. An utterly miserable little game.
The camera effect that happens in the game is called Holonomy, this means that The Fortress of Dr. Radiaki takes place on a non-euclidean plane. Outstanding game design!!
civvie has this thing he does where once ive given up after a few days of refreshing he drops a video within 10 min of me checking
Same. It was the first video in my subs when I checked this afternoon, having given up looking for new civvie vids over the prior few days.
I second that motion.
Always makes me sad.
Then delighted!
Then suspicious.....
This video served as a metaphoric hammer smashing a flood gate of repressed memories of my childhood over the course of 25 minutes. Very cathartic.
Maybe I'm too easily amused, but the game's writing did get a smile out of me.
That smile vanished the moment I saw the gameplay though.
I immediately got a headache the second this one started up. Dear God I actually feel bad for you on this one, Civvie.
An important lesson in video game design I think needed to be put out for the world to see, but holy Hell I am sorry you had to suffer through this.

When I first found your channel, I went "I wonder if he'll ever review that Dr. Radiaki game I used to play as a kid, since I remember it being janky AF." And now you have!
Also it's nice to have vindication that the game was absolute shit. I had trouble with it back then... and now I can see why.

Amazing. It seems like Bethesda shamelessly stole the stealth system from this game.
Thank you Hammer. That sketch was pure mindrot.
i remember seeing this in a bin at Christmas Tree Shoppe for years as a kid. along with The Journeyman Project, where you couldn't get past the copy protection because they just came in a jewel case with no manual. i never bought Dr. Radiaki because it was obviously jank, but it tempted me for years and now i can rest without having to wonder if i was missing out on a hidden gem.
It is always a blessing(?) to find out that Civvie 11 has uploaded a new episode/video and watching it ASAP.
Watching this reminds you how a marvel for it's time Doom was, those short clips that compare the games look so beautifull

That tapeworm line? Pure gold. Thank you for existing, Civvie.
He confirmed he's aware of the existence of Marathon, and so we wait...
Second
RE4 should be a must
Speaking of 3rd person, I'm wondering if he'll ever play heavy metal fakk2 because quake3 engine completionism.
Also waiting on Jedi outcast, hopefully with dismemberment mode enabled. It should be sometime this year, he did dark forces 2 not long ago.
“I imagine this game is what seeing the world with head trauma is like” I’m fuckin dying LOL
You prob are after the head trauma
LOL
Damn I just realized. Shot in the dark by Ozzy is being played in the background when he talks about the guns.(instrumental of course)
Everytime I hear it, I instantly think of Doom 3's shotgun.
If you look at the walls up close and look to the side, the wall doesn't go out of your vision in a normal way, like it doesn't "move to the side" instead in this game when you look to the side, the wall "turns 90 degrees" until it's out of your vision, it's extremely surreal.
I've said this before in the Patreon Discord but I'll say it here too. I *love* how animated AX3 was in this. The slight turning of the head and the blinking eyes when Civvie was talking to him, like he was contemplating what he was being asked lol. Gave him more personality.
AX3 merch when?
I know right? I really liked those animations on AX3 too. Hopefully it becomes more recurrent.

The Castro enemies say "Ow, my head..." when they die and "Flowers for the dead!" when they kill you, both in Spanish.
Even the footage of this game hurts to look at. I started getting a headache at 9:29 and had to start taking breaks. How the hell did the developers manage to work through all this?
I made it like 30 seconds into the level and my eye started to strain lol
Maybe the devs were on heroin? 🤷♂️

The most impressive thing about Civvie in this videos, is that he didnt spoke about the terrible sound of the game (Or the lack of it it seems). The sound effects and the sound in general was so bad that civvie didnt even bother talk about it.
"Ay mi cabeza" says the dude with 4 - 7 bullet holes
This game is mood lol, sewer level at 2nd level too
That ending though, even Gianni regretted doing stuffs with Civvie xD
Perhaps the greatest indictment of Dr. Radiaki is that if you type its name in google, it doesn't label it a "video game", as it's supposed to do. It just labels it as "software". It runs on a PC, it's made of code and assets, but whatever it is you can use it for cannot in good faith be called "playing". Self-harm, masochism, voyeurism perhaps, but not playing.
2:50 can someone please tell me what film are these flashing scenes from?
14:20 Ouch. It's botched raycasting, where the distance to viewing point is used instead of distance to viewing plane -- that's why the walls appear to bend away from the player at the screen edges.
What a wonderful birthday present to receive.
It's like they heard about what an FPS was from a friend, but had never actually played one so they designed something similar without the talent to know when their designs needed improvement. Doom from ID being as good as it is really is amazing when they could have made something like this instead.
I was *just* thinking “It’s about that time when civvie should upload.”
You can't hide from Witchaven II forever Civvie
