Marcus King and Billy Strings play a cover of "Summertime" in a guitar shop. Musically, it's one of the finest renditions of that song... ever! Gershwin himself would likely agree :)
As someone who has grown up with real musicians and 60s and 70s etc. rock I still look for those kinds of bands. They are still out there. Right now The Warning, Dea Matrona, Ally Venable Band, Laura Cox Band, Dirty Honey, When Rivers Meet and more established hard rock bands like Rival Sons and The Answer as well as Southern Rockers like Blackberry Smoke and Whiskey Myers are keeping rock alive.
I fell in love with him a few years ago. He opened up for Chris Stapleton in Nashville. Goodbye Carolina is my absolute favorite song by him. He's an incredible talent.
9 years ago I accidentally saw the Marcus king band live in North Carolina, and I was blown away. I been following this dude ever since, and it’s awesome to see how far he’s come now. The contrast to this and to what he’s doing now is crazy, I’d say he’s dabbling more in R&B these days, but when I saw him live he was only like 18, so it’s pretty exciting to see where he’ll go.
Marcus is a beast. Ive been following/seeing him for about 6 years, always kills it. This is one of his best recordings in my opinion. He made me cry playing solo acoustic in Austin. His voice ripped my heart out on Goodbye Carolina. Seen him with this big band, as a trio and solo. This is a full wall of music, everyone is killing it but just adding to the song not overdoing it
More of today’s “Real Music”: Billy Strings, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Widespread Panic, String Cheese Incident, Umphrey’s McGee, Moe, Goose, Phish, Govt. Mule, Jason Isbell (and The 400 Unit). That should hold you for a while…
He does a really good cover of the song Superstar , made famous by The Carpenters , but their version was a cover also. Originally done by Delaney and Bonnie , it was called Groupie (Superstar).
I am a 70's child and the music was so good and it moved you and growing up in Georgia this is the music that we all loved and still do, it is a part of who we are and the new music is ok , I like a little of all types, but when it comes to people who can just throw down and jam, you can't find those in too many other then these types of talent give then a guitar somebody on drums and then who ever else that can play join in and it's a party, never heard him before but will be checking out his music, got to feel it from your head to your toes
Good live music is out there. The Teskey Brothers (one of our Aussie bands) are touring Billy Strings and brilliant band are always touring. Any musician that Billy collaborates with is worthwhile. As others have said, Billy and Marcus doing Summertime ❤
Music after 2000 or so is so heavily processed and commercialized that its almost unrecognizable as music to us who grew up in the 60's - 80's. people are created famous by big music industry machines rather than attaining fame by being exceptional artists. Marcus would have been HUGE in the 70's...
Marcus is amazing!!! Some other new bands you will probably love is Blackberry Smoke,TedeschiTrucks Band, and The Allman Betts Band. Very talented southern style bands!!!
He’s been around for a long while. Saw him in Boulder 4 years ago. Unfortunately, we have to do real research these days to find guys like this. He has an incredible voice, he’s an amazing guitarist and has a fantastic horn section. Why isn’t the main stream playing him instead of the Americas Got Talent and bubble gum radio stations?
Thank you for checking him out! It brought tears to my ears when I saw that you were. He really is a great talent. In interviews him really seem like a genuinely good guy. I hope you check out Wildflowers & Wine, It's a much more intimate song. Thank you for a great reaction. I am glad you said you couldn't understand what he was saying. I just thought it was because I am 63! I am definitely a lyrics first person.
Want to see some bad-A live southern rock? Check out The Steel Woods-cut the grass (live at blackbird). They are my favorite band and are calling it quits at the end of the year sadly.
He’s from my hometown actually, not even that well known around here but a buddy of mine knew him. The song Goodbye Carolina you should listen to next.
Marcus King is crazy wicked deadly, lol I could be wrong but he is like in his early 20's, His mentor is Warren Haynes of the Allman Brothers Band and Gov't Mule
Sir, may I suggest an amazing artist who has been basically ignored by the entire reaction community? His name is Teddy Thompson and he's one of my favorite singers. I could give you a long list of great songs that he has, but I'll go easy and just start with "Delilah", "Brink of Love", "Wake Up", "Think Again". That should be enough for now. 😊 Actually, he also did a beautiful duet with his dad, Richard Thompson, called "Persuasion". So, yeah. There's that one, too. 🤗
With this performance, Marcus reminds me of Toy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker Band. Both so raw and so damn talented. I didn't know what he was singing either -- but does it really matter?
He's great. Check out Ally Venable. She's a really good blues rock guitarist, singer song writer. She's in her mid 20s and has five albums and several Billboard charting albums and her last one Real Gone was #1 Blues album for three consecutive weeks and has been charting on and off for over a year. She's played and/or toured with Buddy Guy, Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Devon Allman and others. She's also played with Marcus too if I am not mistaken as well as Samantha Fish, played on the Hendrix tribute shows and the Allman-Betts Family tour. She's a Stevie Ray Vaughan fan and SRV inspired her to play guitar. She's y favorite current Blues Rock artist right now.
My "Little Brother (68)" turned me on to Marcus, that and a recommendation from Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule / Allman Bros.) we grew up with this kind of music and saw most of the greats. It was cool how you picked up on this from that Playing For Change video. Take an evening with your wife and check out The Band's "Last Waltz" produced by Martin Scorsese. When you see who showed up to play with them, it'll blow your mind. Music Royalty top to bottom.
Love Marcus King Goodbye Carolina and some others have mentioned. Please listen to Disturbed doing Simon and Garfunkles "Sound of Silence". If you haven't heard it before, do youself and us a favor. Don't listen until the show. ❤ Do Disturbed version with video, its best.
Hey Sebs, I have a very very special request..some folks I worked with a bit in southern gospel music, The Nelons, passed away last Friday in a plane crash in Wyoming..they were super super people..and had even recently been on Family Fued..lol..if you wdo their song, OH For A Thousand Tongues, it would be ao greatly appreciated..
I sent you a donation and request for Taj Farrant. He's another young blues singer/songwriter but especially guitar phenom. I'm going to suggest again if you want to hear him really sing and play check out his performance of The Sky is Crying in Tulsa or him playing his favorite song of his favorite performer Gary Moore's Parisienne Walkways in Nashville at City Winery. Taj recently was the guest performer at the 40th anniversary celebration for Prince's Purple Rain release. He performed at the State Theater opening for Morris Day and Prince's band NPG. His performance of Prince's The Ride at the State Theater is incredible and he also played Purple Rain with NPG. He also had the privilege of playing at Paisley Park and was able to record at Prince's studio and listen to some of Prince's unreleased music in the vault. Taj's first album is being released on August 28th. He's had 6 singles from it chart at #1 on the iTunes blues charts. Taj turned 15 in May. He started playing guitar at 7 and is a phenom. He has appeared with Santana, Rob Thomas, Orianthi, Eric Gales, Christone Kingfish Ingram and most recently with Buddy Guy.
You need tk check out nether hour performing a cover od 90s rap song mind playing tricks on me. It's beyond amazing. Also marcus king is my favorite artist. Watched him live a few weeks ago. One of the best shows I've ever been to.
Marcus King and Billy Strings play a cover of "Summertime" in a guitar shop. Musically, it's one of the finest renditions of that song... ever! Gershwin himself would likely agree :)
I agree, definitely worth the watch.
Agreed 👍🏻
I was going to leave this very same comment!
The two of them also did a fire cover of a lonely fugitive.
Ditto.
As someone who has grown up with real musicians and 60s and 70s etc. rock I still look for those kinds of bands. They are still out there. Sebs you have to check out Marcus Kings song Goodbye Carolina. It was his first performance at Grand Ole Opry. He's amazing
Great song about his friend that died from suicide; highly recommend this one.
Marcus and Billy Strings have a you tube video out there somewhere. Worth looking it up!!!!
Yes! It is Summertime‼️🎸🎶
I fell in love with him a few years ago. He opened up for Chris Stapleton in Nashville. Goodbye Carolina is my absolute favorite song by him. He's an incredible talent.

I love his "Rita is Gone" Jam in the Van channel performance

This band just jams. Marcus has the chops to be a superstar, I just hope the world sees/hears it.
South Carolina boy done good. He was 19 when this was recorded
More of today’s “Real Music”: Billy Strings, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Widespread Panic, String Cheese Incident, Umphrey’s McGee, Moe, Goose, Phish, Govt. Mule, Jason Isbell (and The 400 Unit). That should hold you for a while…
I say this is the perfect introductory song for Marcus King! Go down the rabbit hole!
He does a really good cover of the song Superstar , made famous by The Carpenters , but their version was a cover also. Originally done by Delaney and Bonnie , it was called Groupie (Superstar).
@rogerdaly6326 that's a really special cover!...
Sebs, if you check out Wildflowers and Wine, watch it recorded live for world cafe. It's just him and his guitar.
Yeah it's fire! 🔥
That is my favorite version of that song.
Also a great one by Marcus - love this stripped down version! Highly recommend this one as well
If you get the chance to see the Marcus King Band play live, go!!!!! They put on an awesome show!!!!!!
I absolutely love Marcus King !!!
When Marcus came out from under Warren Haynes' wing, he brought all that rock and muscle memory with him, and it is all good stuff.
Seen this cat since he was just coming up in Greenville !!! A stud for real!!!!!
Dude's got a REAL sound ...
Likin this Vibe ...
Marcus is fire in concert, seen him twice now
"Rita is gone" great song from Jam in the Van! Considering he may be 26yrs old now...
That was my introduction to him. So good 👍
I just listened to this band 2 weeks ago, bloody awesome
I am a 70's child and the music was so good and it moved you and growing up in Georgia this is the music that we all loved and still do, it is a part of who we are and the new music is ok , I like a little of all types, but when it comes to people who can just throw down and jam, you can't find those in too many other then these types of talent give then a guitar somebody on drums and then who ever else that can play join in and it's a party, never heard him before but will be checking out his music, got to feel it from your head to your toes

As others have said, Billy and Marcus doing Summertime ❤
I think Marcus was 19 years old in the video. I’ve seen him 14 times live and he IS THE REAL DEAL.
That red guitar was his grandpas. His dad wouldn’t let him touch it until he was 18. Great gig with Skynard.
Marcus is awesome.....deep catalog. Go ahead and dive in......I'm on board
As someone who is from Greenville, South Carolina this is cool.
Mylie Cyrus has A live version of D.R.E.A.M. that's filmed at night on stage; hits SO MUCH harder than any other performance of it I've seen
MK is AWESOME!!!!!! One BAAADMUTHAAA
Music after 2000 or so is so heavily processed and commercialized that its almost unrecognizable as music to us who grew up in the 60's - 80's. people are created famous by big music industry machines rather than attaining fame by being exceptional artists. Marcus king is "king" hands down
❤ The man and he knows it.🎸💯🎵🎶🎼
takes me back to the early days of Southern Rock a la Ty Caldwell, of Marshall Tucker, Allman Brs & Lynard Skynard - different but in that vein!!
Now this boy can Rock your clock and anything else you got !
He’s been around for a long while. Saw him in Boulder 4 years ago. Unfortunately, we have to do real research these days to find guys like this. Marcus is meant to be heard live, and I RARELY say that about anyone. 99% of the time I recommend studio versions.
The apartment "concerts" during COVID by MGK and Meg Myers have a real feel.
Well you just came across a great. Enjoy all of his music.
His band is fantastic, now I want to go see them live!
You definately need to go down this rabbit hole. Saw him live a while back in Austin.
I agree. It is such a great show of talent.

As Bruce Willis ( who Marcus has performed with) would say, "Welcome to the Party Pal".
3:10
You get it, brother.
As you're learning this kind of music is out there, just not on the radio or the other mainstream sources.
Sir, may I suggest an amazing artist who has been basically ignored by the entire reaction community? His name is Teddy Thompson and he's one of my favorite singers. Check out Matteo Mancuso doing Blues Shuffle...their calling him the next level guitarist
A few years ago, a Rainbow Kitten Surprise concert (was it in Athens?) was better than the record!
MO PITNEY, You will love this one, you have daughters , you will love this one for sure Please listen and give him a try.
AUTUMN RAINS.... nuff said.
Gotta check out Greg Howe (Guitarist) and his inventory...Next Level , Bro .
Going to see this guy at massey hall. I'm also one of the bands biggest fans 😂😂
Dude if you liked his voice here (when he was like 20), you gotta hear him sing now. It’s night and day.
Killer! Is all I can say.
“…Re-emergence of the Blues”??? Dude, it NEVER went anywhere! 😉
Hey Sebs, I have a very very special request..some folks I worked with a bit in southern gospel music, The Nelons, passed away last Friday in a plane crash in Wyoming..they were super super people..and had even recently been on Family Fued..lol..if you wdo their song, OH For A Thousand Tongues, it would be ao greatly appreciated..

welcome to the real effing deal....
Have you ever heard the Soundtrack for Devil's Rejects ??
If Stevie Ray Vaughn and Janis Joplin had a baby, it would be Marcus King.
I promise on everything holy; I came to say the EXACT SAME THING!!! 💯 😂
Hey what kind of cup is that?
You should go listen to Billy strings new song “Leadfoot” it’s got a really odd music video but it’s a good upbeat flow
Johnny Lang Lie to me& Darker Side
Kenny Wayne Shepard Blue on Black and for your country side Eric Church Homeboy
Sounds a whole lot like Warren Hayes.
Check out some 2024 A.D. live Rammstein 🔥
I mean, I'm not mad at him.
That is not really the best introduction to him, but you will find it. The mix isn't great on this video, and on others it's stellar.
Check out Rooster Walk 10
how bout that drummer
Your comment...not cool
