  • Hi Lazies!
Today I reacted to a video that had been controversial in 2010 when Lee Da Hae, a Korean actress was seen insulting Filipino-English accent on a KBS show. She is seen trying to copy different accents; American, British and Filipino/Southeast Asia. On a tweet, she apologize to Filipinos that have been offended by her actions. She also denies insulting Filipino-English Accent and unaware of the edited version of the show (edited version: showing the Philippine Flag on commentary) She added that she didn't intend to insult or offend anyone and just wanted to have lighthearted conversations.
You can know more about this in an article by Spot.ph: www.spot.ph/newsfeatures/4688...
This video had been brought again after a decade because of the recent #CancelKorea issue.

I am Fil-Am and no matter how long I lived here in the US I still have Filipino accent and I am proud of it. Lee Da Hae feels like she is above and beyond anyone else and I want her to know straight up that even if she speaks fluent english that does not mean she is intelligent. Think outside the box, respect cultural differences, it is not important to be fluent, it is more important to just be able to communicate. Here in the US, we do not focus on that as we are multi cultured.

Got into a teaching moment with a white friend over accent he was calling costumer service as usual, a pinoy with heavy bisayan answered and he complained that the guy was rude and he can't understand the accent and one of his friends commented that he should ask where bourogh this guy comes from and the guy would not know what that means they posting the comments on face book , I had enough and I said borough is a district and we don't used that word often , we use the word barangay in the Philippines and I replied you guys are american but you have your own accent if your from Boston you have bostonian accent, from south you have the southern drawl, New Jersey different accent, its unique and shows your accent so I won't critize anyone with accent, they stop posting nasty comment. When I saw him a couple of days after, he asked me if I was angry at him and I said no, just explaining people have different accent, I told him it's a teaching moment. BOW

To humiliate Filipinos with the consent of that Korean program. Shame on her and her co actors on that show because they all laughed. They also didn't know because they just relied on her false knowledge. Shame. I thought they have high regards on their culture..is it to shame other culture? Maybe.

I used to adore her before as an actress but when I found out she said something bad to the Philippines, aside from this accent issue, I was totally disappointed about her. As what I know she grew up in Australia so she knows how to speak English but she does not have the right to belittle Filipinos accent because it shows your own roots, identity and where you actually came from, and there's nothing to be ashamed of it. Thanks for your opinion.Such Korean actress and others are entitled to their own opinion . But we can brag of our knowledge and use of Filipino English both oral and written. We are so conscious of our Engl structure . But because we are not Americans or Britons we are not expected to have the correct accent that is why we call it Filipino Engl. Engl is part of school curriculum in all educational levels. Also mastery of the Engl has been a part of our life from pre school days. This mastery I can brag.As an evidence my niece applied for studies in a college school in Australia .She was exempted from undergoing requirements for Engl . in her admission requirements. Also I ( graduate of an education degree major in Engl minor Fili ) taught Engl for 38 yrs in both high school and college and I know who excels in Engl. and related courses.Prior to influx of technology my students were good at oral and written Engl.Sad to say nowadays the use of Engl is facing the challenges like bilinggualism. But Engl remains as a part of our current curriculm. Keep safe everyone.

Even Americans have different accents, like the southern accent (from the southern states) is sometimes difficult to understand until one gets used to it. It's a fact that accent is not a gauge of the language knowledge. I still remember when a high ranking executive of the place I initially worked in the USA kept on telling other people how proficient I was expressing myself specially in written English, that I used words that he did not even use in his daily communication/conversation. And mind you, compared to all other Filipinos I honestly feel that my English knowledge in all aspects is just average. Now I have even increased my English vocabulary and know exactly what "chosen words" I could use describing some "nice" Koreans (tongue in cheek). I do hope they will understand every word I say as I have proudly retained my Filipino accent. I GUESS THERE ARE MANY "BEACHES" IN KOREA, and they better not mispronounce that word or else it could sound like an offensive word, with or without accent. Hehe.... P.S. I love Koreans! Kamsa Hamnida! P.S.S. Lazisoo, I understand your spoken English very well without any difficulty at all,. You have good vocabulary and I am pretty sure it won't take long for you to master the English language (grammar specially) , written and oral. I wish I will hear you talk again in English after 6 months,

Please don't mind those hate comments because here in the Philippines, not every Filipino speaks with English accent when doing so. This is evident mostly from those living in the rural areas and/or didn't finish their schooling but still trying to answer in English. What matter most is how to communicate understandably with other person and not the accent. Love & peace to everyone ❣️♥️✌️😊

On a serious note, before mocking other people's accent, the mockers should listen to themselves first. English is just a language, there is no required accent to be called as an English speaker. There is no proper accent, only proper capability to speak english.
Edited: "They" changed into "the mockers" to prevent generalization.

Understand that some people can be very rude with their keyboards, not just filipinos or koreans, so if you pay attention to them, they will pull you down. There are more people who support you than those who hate you and that's something you should smile about 😊 Great job!

Hi, Lazisso, as Koreans generally you don't prefer to speak English that much. But to us Filipinos, speaking the English language matters most. And throughout our years in school, English and Filipino language is the medium of instruction. The proper use and the proper pronounciation of both English and Filipino terms are being taught. That shows how serious and sincere we are to acquire the skill in terms of communication in both languages. That's why many of you Koreans and other Asean countries prefer to study English language here in the Philippines. But still you have the guts and the face to embarrass and berrated us, Filipinos the way we speak, may it be the accent or the way we pronounce the word in most of your TV programs in Korea, which seems far different here in our country. That I appreciated much here in the Philippines, not one TV Station and TV programs in that matter ever maligned any countries most specially your country such as what you're doing to us. Ask them to stop it does not contribute any good to the listening public instead you are creating ill-feeling or feud to both countries. Good that we have you na Korean seem different from your Kababayan. Hope to see you or communicate to you personally. Looking forward to it.

well, this is a misconception about the Filipino accent, as this actress probably didn't meet Filipinos who have an American accent or no Filipino accent when they speak English. And yes I totally agree, accent isn't important but with correct pronunciation to avoid any miscommunication. We Asians don't need to sound like westerns as we are not western people. It's okay to learn or adapt to other countries' accents but it's inappropriate behavior to make fun of other countries' accents. I am from Philippines and I really appreciate your insight regarding to this issue. Yeah, I also agree that every person has different accent and pronounciation. And nobody has the right to insult anybody or somebody. We, filipinos love korea (drama, music, culture etc.) So instead of insulting, why not give everyone equal respect. Everybody should be treated fairly, with respect. Spread love not negativity💜😉

It doesn't matter how good your english grammar or accent is,what matters more to me is,how good your heart is in understanding every nationality accent. No one is perfect even how fluent you are or good you are in many ways.
Im proud to be a filipino😘
    I love my country Philippines!❤❤❤
I love everything about our culture!
    Just spreads love!!!❤

Lol, Filipinos don’t even sound like that when speaking English. She just embarrassed herself.

Filipinos are often more proficient in language than Koreans, as some Koreans may struggle to construct even simple sentences in English LOL😭

As a Filipino, I simply did not understand what she was saying when she said that was the way Filipinos speak English 😅

I totally agree accent is not important the most important is communication that both parties could understand each other.
