It doesn't seem like anyone really cares about preserving history anymore. Everything is now now now, new new new and big businesses can't wait for things to close or destroy so they can replace it. I think this is why new generations are starting to appreciate history more and go for retro and vintage things.

The Jeremiah O'Brien being the last functional Liberty Ship still afloat and in operation should be declared a Maritime National Historic Landmarks: Large Vessel, and had a home port designated. If the vessel can remain in operation then national tours can be scheduled for specific events throughout the year. Congress should step in and do this.
Ships like the Jeremiah O'Brien and U.S.S. Hornet need to be preserved for history and future generations. Sad to see them not get the financial support they deserve.
With a Defense budget just shy of 800 Billion Dollars... they ask for the people to chip in some more?? And yes, I'd consider military museum pieces such as this part of the "defense effort". It's a piece of PR to instil a "sense of duty" and entice people to signing up. So yes, somewhere in those 800B, most of which will soon be unaccounted for, should be some money to keep this thing afloat.

She is actually 3 years YOUNGER than Training Ship Golden Bear (ex - SS Del Orleans/USS Crescent City) which took us across the Pacific and down to Australia during winter training cruises.
It’s horrible that beautiful and historic ships like this require public support, wartime vessels like the Jeremiah O’Brien and others should receive government backed financial aid given they and their crew shaped how our world is today
The Cross Sound Ferry's "Cape Henlopen" operated during the D-Day invasion, as USS LST 510. She still sails daily between New London, CT and Orient Point, NY ... so there is at least one other ship still operating today that operated during D Day. I watch her sail regularly.
I got to see that ship years ago; unfortunately either no tours were going on at the time or couldn’t afford it I don’t remember which but it was quite impressive ship though. Hopefully it gets towed to a more America loving city though.
I remember as a kid in Yonkers, N.Y., the Liberty ships all anchored out in the Hudson River by Peekskill, N.Y. They dwindled away slowly, but disappear they did.
Can they move the ship back to pier 45? Obviously, the pier 35 relocation has been affecting their sales. Donations will only delay the inevitable if they can't get back to a more visible location.
It seems like the U.S. Government could take a little interest in our Historic artifacts. They fund support for some museums, the national parks, national historic sites, etc. Why can't the Feds support these great ships? Including the Lane Victory in SoCal.

It is living history, buy a ticket for Fleet Week where it goes under the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge and you have the best seat for the airshow. The O'Brian engine room is where the engine room scenes were filmed for TITANIC and you can visit the OPERATING engine room which is a THRILLING EXPERIENCE. DO IT.
Shame on me and anyone else especially since I live in San Francisco for not visiting this vessel I will and donate. The people who keep this proud ship alive should not have to worry about closing her down

To be fair this ship is not a true liberty ship. All the liberty ships built by the original ship yard & designer sadly have all been scrapped before one could be saved. This ship is definitely a liberty ship design just one built outside the original ship yard/builder when the original yard couldn’t keep up with demand It definitely should be saved though! It’s as close to a real example of a liberty ship as we’ll ever get & the fact it’s still operational is incredible! I would love to take my children on it one day
This ship is indeed a real Liberty Ship. It was built in Portland, Maine in 1943. This historic vessel took part in the Normandy invasion on D-Day in June of 1944. There were many shipbuilding ports in the US during WW2, not just those built by Henry Kaiser in California.
The is a mode of the Jeremiah O’Brien in the Musée de l'Armée at the Hôtel national des Invalides in Paris, the same facility that house’s Napoleon’s Tomb.
Historical Museum ships like this one, American National icons like the SS United States, and landmark historical buildings throughout America would be a much better investment for America’s so called “Billionaires” than egocentric private yachts, fleets of private jets, and rocket ships. IMO.
Honestly, it would be just as "historic" if the ship was stationary. I'm guessing that just as many people would visit if it was stationary and a lot less money would be required to keep her in good shape. I just visited the nearby Pampanito and walked stem to stern as I listed to the guided tour on my phone. I learned a lot and could empathize with the crew who had to live in those cramped quarters. I didn't have to go out to sea or dive below the surface to experience that.
I boarded the ship around the late 90’s and there were several veterans just sitting there. I guess they were the caretakers. I also boarded the other liberty ship in San Pedro,CA
did another organization find out it bit off more than it could chew?I know of two other museum ships that are in trouble because of poor attendance.Then they have to give it back to MaRad or the Navy or whom ever and they in turn have to dispose of it.....
One of the crew members took me to the end of shaft ally to show me how much water comes gushing in when the engine was shut down, we both laughed at the design of the seal only ment to keep out the water when the prop was spinning!
I've been on this ship and the World War II submarine, and I'd love to go see them again. But I will not spend another dime in San Francisco. I've been to Pier 39 several times and would love to go there again. I would not feel safe walking the streets or leaving my car parked anywhere in that city. Maybe someday, if the city cleans up its act.

Before his passing a few years ago, he sponsored many activities finding sunken ships of WWII and preserving their history. The US Coast guard, or the naval academy, should take over the maintenance of this ship, like they used to train seamanship on actual rigged sailing ships. I'm sure the US military wasted a lot more money than it would take to preserve this historic ship.
Kaiser ship build was a pioneer in prefabricaing sub-structures which were then assembled into ships. This allowed for war time manufacturing on a massive scale. So they actually turned one nationally every 24 hours, they were not building a single completed ship in 24 hours.
Have walked all through this ship. It is an incredible experience. Engineer gave us a tour of the engine room. Awe inspiring.
We should keep both as both ships help win the war. My hometown built many a liberty ship.
