Red-winged blackbird attacks cyclist

- This red-winged blackbird lives just north of Port Hope, Ontario, at the corner of Dale Road and Sylvan Glen Road. He buzzes my head every day, twice a day, when I ride by. Definitely another reason to wear a helmet while cycling.
I freaked out too...the first few times. But after 20 or so attacks I feel like I know his behaviour now. Plus, it helps that I can watch him in my shadow. That gives me some comfort.
Red winged Blackbirds can attack any interlopers, including people who are venturing to close to the nest, regardless what state they are living in. I thought certain birds do attack people in the desert region in the Southeastern States as well as Southern States with little or no winter, but I was wrong.
I have one that attacks my helmet on the bike path near Hampton, IL. I have come to look forward to it. He must get a lot of exercise since it's a pretty popular path!
I got attacked durning a 6.5 mile run at the end and I was super freaking tired but I had to sprint because it was chasing after me.
I got hit by two different ones today near Port Byron, Illinois. The first one was a little tap on the top of my helmet , the second one was on the side and it freaked me out a little bit-it put some pep back in my cadence
Those things are aggressive. I wonder if it would be worthwhile to try putting fake eyes on the back of a helmet/shirt to get them to keep a bit more distance. You are much more calm about them than me! I get freaked out.
There's a human-made forest near my home that has a pathway that I usually walk through to get to the bus stop. Every summer I have to be careful because there are a lot of red winged black birds in that forest. The males are very aggressive during mating season, so what I do is either avoid that pathway altogether, or look back as I walk through the pathway. RWBB are more hesitant to attack when they know you're watching them. Their screeching sends shivers down my spine.
While riding a local trail I've been chased, too. Usually the one after me quits after one peck. Feels like getting tapped by a plastic spoon. Funny!
Hi, how's it going? May I feature this clip on my channel? Thanks for your consideration
sure
@@dagostdm Thanks! Have a good one!
Stick some googly eyes to the back of your helmet. They hate when you look at them.
This, is hilarious. I had this happen to me today for the first time while running and had to google to see if this was a "thing." So glad I found your video.
My boyfriend has been traveling near Hampton as well with the same results these past few weeks. He tells me "I'm so glad I invested in a helmet for accident safety. But I never thought of a blackbird as an accident before! I tried to warn an oncoming cyclist that it would happen and he just said 'yeah, yeah right.' A few seconds later he says 'Get away from me!' I turn around and said 'See, I warned you.' "
I was on the same great river trail north of Port Byron today and got hit by two different ones-the second one meant business
I was attacked too last year while cycling but didn’t have a helmet... and i fell off... it was very bad 😢
I hope you've recovered-It was very hot today and I was going to forgo the helmet on the quiet trail I was on...I was lucky i didn't because the little son of a gun would have dropped me
I get dived-bombed by red-winged blackbirds here in the Kittitas Valley (Central Washington State) pretty often; they're very territorial. But only once has one hit me on the helmet, many years ago. Thanks for posting.
We have them by the Illinois river; I got dive bombed this morning. Some of them merely "escort" you out of the area; others attack like this. I find that if I spot them first, I can yell at them and they back off.
Lol this happened to me . I had to google it to see if anyone else was attacked. I thought it was my helmet because there is a little graphic of eyes 👀 on the back . Too funny 😁
Persistent....
Did you do something to him he might be holding a grudge
Hi there! Great job recording this! Would it be OK with you if I feature this clip in a compilation? Fully credited of course including your channel name, video title and URL in the description! I'd love to hear from you soon, thanks in advance :)
Sure. Thanks for asking first.
Thank you so much! No problem :)
Hi again! I've just uploaded my latest compilation including your clip! You can check it out on my channel, the video is called:
"Cyclists Crashes, Near Misses & Crazy Angry Car Drivers [Cyclists vs Road Rage Ep. 4]".
Thank you so much for sharing, ride safe and have a great day :)
I have one that always chances me along a local bike trail it always gives up quick and hasn't touched me yet lol
EH! Canadian cycling videos ftw!
It would have been him for sure. If you were on Sylvan Glen Rd on a bike in the last month then for sure it was him! That's so funny.
