Let me first preface this by listing what I carry on a daily basis, and what I use in the backcountry. My EDC trio consists of a Victorinox Rambler (2"), a Buck 425 Diamondback (3.25" 420HC fixed blade, and a vintage Gerber Harsey AirFrame First Production Run (3.875" 154CM fine edge, machined titanium scales). For formal occasions, I have a combo edge aluminium scale version of the AirFrame, primarily because its lighter weight makes it easier to clip to lingerie under an evening gown. The Buck is my lunch knife. I use it only for food, and I carry it primarily to cut through crusty baguettes and slice apples, that sort of thing. I never use folding knives for food, because I don't like getting gunk in the joint.
In the backcountry, I usually carry a pair of vintage Gerber Pro-Guide II fixed blades, the 925 Drop Point Hunter (4.375" 420HC) and 975 Caper (2.75" 420HC). I also have the 900 Skinner in the range, but I never use it. I also have a pair of Benchmade fixed blades, the 190 Drop Point Hunter and 192 Bird & Trout (both 440C), and if I know I'm going to be in the water, I carry my Benchmade 100RR First Production Run (3.125" GIN-1, plain edge, fixed blade). I also carry an early production Gränsfors Bruks Mini Belt Hatchet (now called the Small Hatchet). And the Victorinox Rambler also comes with me into the backcountry.
OK. My favorite knife to recommend to all people--man, woman, boy, girl, child, doesn't matter--is the Victorinox Rambler. It's the same size as the Classic, but adds the bottle opener from the Rally. The classic Victorinox design is elegant enough for even the most formal occasions, and the mix of tools it carries will cover almost anything. Most importantly, the scissors are the best nail trimmers I've ever had in my life. My only criticisms are the tweezers and the nail file, both of which could be much better. The nail file in particular to far too coarse for a lady to touch up her nails, though a gentleman might not be troubled by it. The tweezers are OK for splinters, but awful for eyebrows. I would not hesitate to recommend any smaller/thinner Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. Just pick the one you think has the right set of tools for you. The Victorinox knives are of course available in some very fancy versions, even some offered by Tiffany & Co. that almost any woman (and not a few men) would be happy to receive as a gift. The Classic Alox is a gorgeous knife that no one would be embarrassed to show off.
My Rambler is my most used knife (letters, packages, string, tape, fingernails, the occasional screw), and because of its small size, I never worry about using it in public, or even handing it to someone so they can use it. My EDC AirFrame never comes out in public, unless there is a need for a larger utility knife, and my formal AirFrame never sees the light of day, because that is my emergency SHTF hideout/backup self-defense weapon that is never used for utility duty. I'm old enough to remember the days when no one even took notice of a pocket knife, but these days, with "zero-tolerance" policies abounding, I don't like taking out the big blades where other people can see them unless absolutely necessary.
I've noticed a tendency in recent years toward knives that are very aggressive-looking. Most women aren't going to want a knife that looks like it could stab you all on its own. Fortunately, there are at least some knives still on the market that are non-intimidating, and as most women do have slightly smaller hands (not me, which I sometimes rue), you might consider a folding knife in the ~3" blade range, rather than the ~4" range. The Civivi Elementum comes to mind as a cleanly and elegantly designed, good sized, relatively inexpensive option. I'd think the CJRB Feldspar also fits this description. Otherwise, there's no reason why most of the knives that appeal to men wouldn't also appeal to women, but those two knives are good models for what to look for in a knife for most women.
I would also think that a lot of women might appreciate some of the slim liner lock flippers that are on the market, like the Boker Urban Trapper knife and similar other models they and others make, as everyday urban carry knives.

My pocket's top edge puts up a fight every time I try to put away most knives. Yes, women's pockets are too small. That is because our fashions tend to be more fitted. If we had big pockets like men, the bulky seams would show right through the fabric of the jeans leg. The top edge of man's baggy pocket doesn't usually get caught in the gap between the top and bottom handle scales. I'm always looking for protruding back spacers that double as pry tools, screw drivers or lanyard holes because they dive right into my pocket like a fish into water. Example: Kershaw Barge. For those who like tip-up carry, it helps if the closed blade is flush with the scales so there's no gap to catch the cloth. Example: Kershaw Shuffle

I buy knives that catch my eye and that fit my hands....I try not to get too many black knives and like to switch up the colors. The blade length I usually go for is about 3" but that's only because anything too much bigger doesn't make me feel like I'm in full control of the length.....as for pockets, yes us ladies have them sometimes, and yes they're small. And as for scaring anyone around me, I don't really care too much :)

When buying a knife, the only different considerations I have as a woman are the size of my hands and size of pockets. Most women’s jeans have tiny pockets and some pants have no pockets at all. My hands are also very small, even compared to other women (unisex glove size XS). This effects handle size but also ability to one-hand open. My fingers aren’t even long enough to Spidey flick any other than the smallest Spydercos. Even some smaller knives, like the CRKT Pilar are too big for me to one-hand open. Auto knives like Kershaw Leek (which has other negatives but ...) have been useful, but auto knives are by no means necessary. Don’t care any more about color than the average man, maybe less. Looking dangerous or scaring people? Not a concern. FWIW my daily carry right now is a Spyderco Dragonfly with K390. I also carry a Leatherman Skeletool often. It fits my hand perfectly and I can sometimes one-hand open the blade. Prefer not to put my knife in a bag or backpack. I want it on me. Hope this helps.

    • @ryanharnell9268
      @ryanharnell9268 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Nina. My hands are built like bear claws, thick at the back but not much up front, so I feel your glove battles and the right knife fit. Ever thought of what qualifies as a neck knife? I've had many "Neck knives " but it didn't mean I mounted them that way. What you said about the pilar is a pretty good benchmark for size. From what you said it doesn't sound like you'd be concerned about spooking folks with a small fixed blade either. If your needs turn to wood or almost any task, I can't recommend the Mora Eldris enough. I have one vest carry at work and I can't believe how capable it is for it's size. CRKT and SOG have some popular offerings. There's a lot of talk how gals are slipping the SOG - ULTRA XR - just inside their waistbands, avoiding the pocket issue. I want one for myself even with pockets. Hope this helps!

The Kershaw leek is assisted not an auto, only difference being an auto is a push button or lever to deploy and an assisted knife uses thumb studs with a spring. Automatic knives are still as useful and utilitarian as manual knives. Why aren’t they necessary?

Great video! Thanks for always being so genuine and thorough.
As a female wearing things with and without pockets, I think it boils down mainly to hand size (i.e. women tend to have smaller hands) and ease of carry (i.e. lack of pockets and carrying heavier things in a purse is a bit of a nuisance) amongst other things. I find the MKM Isonzo and Spyderco Lil native amongst some of my favorite EDC options. Course everyone is different so it's nice to hear more thoughts from more people!

Even though I'm a little stronger that most women, I sometimes need more force to make a good cut. I like to maximize the power of my cut by using a shorter blade, but I want to keep 4 fingers on the handle. That combination is elusive on modern knives. I would love a 2" blade on a 3&1/2" handle! I end up with knives that have a finger choil on the blade so that I can choke up. My Cold Steel Tuff Lite is an example.

My wife doesn't do much as far as TH-cam. She likes but doesn't love knives. She absolutely carries one everyday. Spyderco Delica, Dragonfly, Chaparral, Sage, Native, and Squeak. She didn't love the look of Spyderco knives but they grew on her. She likes the way they fit in most over her pockets. She likes Benchmade a lot due to them looking more of what she thinks a knife should look like. She has her own Mini Griptilian and Mini Bugout that she carries. Her first knife was a Kershaw Leek and she likes it with the speed safe and lock. She likes the Launch 4 and 11 due to size again they are great knives for women. I would add a few knives as well that she doesn't like the looks on. The Cold Steel Tuff Lite, CRKT Squid and Pilar. Now Case and GEC make a lot of traditional pocket knives and she likes Teardrop style of knife.

I love these videos. You do a great clear job on explaining about each knive and the brand names. I love it that you always put the brand name on the screen, when you first start out explaining the knife that really helps because its easy to get confused of what brand name goes with each knife. I do love knifes. I have small hands. When I think about getting another knife. I look for something that is easy to open and close. and something that fits small hands, has a good hand grip and its non slip grip, safe blade to work with when you open and close it. I am also not hunter and don't go camping any more, just a simple person that likes knifes. Any knife no matter the color that fits the list I mention earlier works great for me. Keep up with those videos there great. I love that you mention a knife comes in other colors. I know I mention the color does not matter but its nice to know that you can get a knife in a color you like.

I did a lot of research before buying my first knife to carry hiking with me over 10 years ago. I needed it to be as light as possible, fit my small 5'2" hands, and be very easy to deploy. I bought the Benchmade mini-Griptilian. I have bought numerous knives since then and I wear Levi's pretty much all the time - so I carry in my front pocket or waist. The mini-grip has been a hard act to follow for light, easy to deploy and is pretty solid. I have rotated others including the Spyderco Delica 4 (which is my at home carry). It is rock solid with the lock back and feels comfortable in many grip positions. It is not nearly as easy to deploy as the mini-grip however, and when I had a wrist tendon issue it was pretty much impossible to open one-handed (tendon is all healed now). I recently bought the Boker Trapper Petite Titanium version which is very light and has a front-flipper. I don't think it is worth the money frankly - the edges are rough and it feels cheap. I have another front-flipper that was quite inexpensive and bought with one of those mass-drops... it is a StatGear Slinger. Wow, it is well-made, nice blade, easy flipper - and all the edges are high quality smooth. I actually bought 3 more when the price dropped to $30 to give away as gifts. The only thing I didn't like about it originally was the tip down only carry. Since then (when I got the Boker) I have decided that for front flippers, tip down works best for me. I prefer tip up for thumb deploy.

DCA! Don’t apologies to the “Im offended mob”. You don’t come across as an arrogant jerk, you come across as someone who is genuine in their abilities and inabilities. That’s one reason I started to watch this channel. You seem to know details of a wide range of knives and don’t pretend to be something you’re not. In anything one says on TH-cam there is a person offended for every statement.

Just this week, I had to tackle the same questions about knives for women, for a coworker who wanted a knife that worked with her attire. I ended up getting her a Bear & Son 109OR Slipjoint, so it would fit in the 5th pocket of her jeans! And a Victorinox Cadet to nestle alongside it. She loved them both. Great episode, I love this series, because I learn so much!

Have appreciated a number of recent videos pointing out that featured knives are great for smaller hands, or purse carry, some specifically mentioning they might work well for some women etc. ONE thing to consider re: index finger flippers and stud openers is how easy or hard they are to activate. I've ordered a few knives that were otherwise practical for intended use, but were simply too hard on my thumb/index finger, at best taking very focused effort and making my digits feel "ripped up", and at worst, truly unable to get the leverage or pressure to open at ALL. FYI, my hands are womens' large or extra large, or men's medium in most gloves, and I have overall good hand strength. One style folder to consider is the type with blade button release that allow "flicking open" with a bit of wrist action. (I have some sizes and budget friendly options in Gerber and CRKT knives) One index finger flipper knife I LOVE (very budget friendly as well as very easy to open and very versatile blade shape and handle/grip) is the Kershaw Volt II. I've got both partly serrated and fully smooth edge versions and love them for outdoor recreation and yard work as well as around the house. Another nice feature is it's overall light weight, making it not pull down on pocket, great for hiking etc. For me personally, color isn't a big deal OTHER than times I want to be able to see it easier if I drop it! :D Cheers! :D

As a woman I don’t see knives as sex specific. However manufacturers of jeans should get serious about pocket size. I now buy men’s jeans because they have real pockets when I’m outside working in the garden or camping with my family. Your hand size reference is useful.

Watching this video late but one thing I started noticing when I started watching your TH-cam videos was that you would say “slightly larger than average” a lot. Over time I wondered why you said it so much and then I began searching for it, waiting for it to come out. It’s a highlight of the videos. And I can tell from the rest of the comments I’m not the only one who enjoys it.

For fixed knives, my absolute favorite knife is the TOPS Lioness fixed blade knife!! For EDC pocket knives favorite folding knife is the Cold Steel Lucky One - due to its size and weight of the knife makes it almost disappear in my pocket. Other knives that I enjoy carrying are my MKM Isonzo, Buck 112 Slim and Kershaw Scallion. On days that I wear business attire my go-to EDC knives are made by Case (Peanut, Pocket Hunter, Texas Toothpick). These are easy to carry in a blazer or cardigan pocket and the Kirinite scales are quite nice.

I've watched almost every video on your channel and the phrase about the size of your hands has never frustrated me. I even find it very practical. You don't have to apologize for something that is useful for thousands of people, rather than for one or two annoying! For me, there is no greater professional than DCA to present knives in such detail, period! For those who need to catch something with both hands, there are some "other channels".

As a female (and new) knife enthusiast, I have discovered that knives can look quite attractive when you are handling them with your "slightly larger than average hands" (implicitly relative to male sized hands) but will often be too big for me. I was seriously considering a Manix 2 when I tried a friend's -- way too big. So instead I got a Para 3 lightweight. So mostly I check out blade length and eliminate anything much over 3 inches. Also my hands are not that strong even compared to other women so I have to careful about the locking mechanism. Case in point -- I can't manipulate the Manix 2 ball bearing lock one handed.

Agree with you about "knives for women" being reductive. Knives are fundementally unisex - I use a mora companion the most, because I'm pretty butch, have an interest in bushcraft and am usually wearing a belt or pants with pockets big enough to store it without issue. If *anyone* wanted to buy a knife specifically for self defense in skimpy clothing, that doesn't instantly make them women's knives! Sometimes I think the concept of women's knives is just an excuse to make it pink and charge more. That being said, there's nothing wrong with anyone buying small and pink "aesthetic" knives of course :) I really appreciate the sensitive and respectful way you handled the conversation without being completely pandering and apologetic about it. The entire video was great too. Thanks.

    Hi David.
To me there isn't any difference between my need and use for knives vs men's. I have several in rotation depending on what I am doing. My favorite for the time being is the SOG Tac xr. I just love that knife and it's goes with me for the everyday walks in the woods, packrafting, canoeing, wildcamping or whatever I do. For wildcamping/cooking/hunting/fishing I bring one of my fixed blades too. I keep a SOG Terminus xr in my handbag. I have a Kershaw cqc 6k but although comfortable and very fast to draw it will never be a favorite as the frame lock tends to ruin my nails when closing it and I don't even have long nails.
My favorite multitool is a Gerber that has served me well for 15 years and I have a Victorinox sd attached to my keys.
I can assure you I wouldn't be caught carrying a pink, purple or other "girlish" colors knife. However, my hands are smaller and slimmer than many men's so I do pay attention when you talk about hand and handle sizes.

As far as lady knives. I got my girlfriend a lime green buck ranger slim or whatever it’s called. But she loves it. Easy steel for me to sharpen and the bright color makes it easy for her to see in her purse if she needs it. She also carries a utx 70 for more safety style opportunities. She also isn’t a huge “knife nut” though. These are just good first knives in my opinion
