Spyderco has lost their damn minds with the Bodacious. How does S30V and two flat un-contoured slabs of G10 add up to an almost $300 knife? Completely crazy.
I've been saying it's the most strop responsive powder steel on the market since it came out. Hell I just posted a short about it a few days ago discussing exactly that.
I literally just left the ER I stabbed the middle of my left hand almost clean through from inside to out. Looked like a murder scene all the blood Lucky I didn't hit anything important. Got some stitches and a band aid. Take them out in 14 days they said. And here I am watching the only video I look forward to every Thursday, MORE KNIVES 😂 the irony .. happy holidays everyone at knife center and viewers.
I almost cut my thumb off one day. I was in shock that it happened over almost nothing. Seeing blood and bone while simply cutting open a container is wild lol
DCA is on the ball. Traditionally a sheepsfoot blade has a spine that is parallel to the edge. A lambsfoot blade has the sheepsfoot nose but has a drop in the spine ie. the blade height narrows as you move towards the tip. As for a blade with a sheepsfoot nose and a trailing spine ie. the blade height increases as you move towards the tip?? Muttonfoot?? Regardless, I love the sheepsfoot design. Good when you want to reduce the risk of puncturing or poking. Sharp blades all.
I have never considered a Half Breed knife ever before, but that new lock might put me over the edge far enough to pick one up before the end of the year.
Whaaat that’s blasphemous I’ve never seen the manix 2 before…… Ok 100% bullsh*t. No I agree with you. Are a manix 3 or 4 completely dead in the water at this point? Can we maybe get that instead?
Well that's great considering the manix 2 is one of if not the best Edc knife model on the market.. Ide much rather have a new manix 2 sprint in a new high performance steel than I would a new model come out that I may very well not like. Speaking of that come on spyderco we need a rex76 manix 2 sprint! Let's make it happen.
I bought and recieved in the mail a Native Chief with Spy27 and G10 recently and am so happy with it. Its excellent. Perfect centering, no imperfections with fit snd finish. And such a cool feeling knife to take out of your pocket to make a cut or process material with. I think I kight have to get the Spy27 UKPK next to check out the G10 on that one. The only reason i havent picked up one yet is I just dont prefer the FRN they have been available with so far.
I pre-ordered a Shaman in spy27 on Nov 11, and I just got a notice it wouldn't be available until after Christmas. That sucks balls. Might get the manix 2 in spy27, especially since Crucible might disappear in a few months.
Such a refreshing video after Blade HQ tried to sell me a $150 utility knife and more Dessert Warrior pride month trash in their weekly update. Well done! It’s clear you are in touch with the consumers much more than some of your competitors.
The chaves blue labels are gonna have aftermarket scales soon not sure when probably sometime in 2025 should be pretty cool I'll be getting some copper or brass ones
I have a TAK, a Street and a Liberation and I have to say, the TAK is easily my favorite fifth pocket or small knife in design, form, and function. I have never, never, had to tune the pivot in the 2+ years I've had it. It's just perfect.
I know the Chavez stuff has had that same skeleton forever, but it looks silly when there’s two screws right above its head. It would’ve been great if somehow he incorporated the screws to be the skeleton eyes.
Yes. They are applying for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. In the US this is a financial protection mechanism that companies can use when they have a cashflow problem to: 1) to allow them to operate while restructuring to fix the cash flow problem or 2) sell the business. There are a number of newspaper articles - search 'Crucible Chapter 11'. Regardless it's not a good sign. They make most of the premium knife steels in the market and would be missed. Unfortunately knife steels are only a small part of their business. It's the bulk steel market (eg. construction & manufacturing) that's causing them grief. Watch this space I guess ....
NOT like micarta as such. Although my experience with Kirinite is limited as I only have two Case knives with it, I have noticed that when wet Kirinite does not become slick like you might expect from shiny plastic. To me, the Kirinite gripiness remains the same wet or dry - which is good. This is unlike most micarta style scales which tend to become a bit tacky/sticky when wet. DCA's experience seems to be a bit different to mine - but I can't argue as he has handled a lot more knives than me. Hope this helps.
KnifeAQ question: Hey DCA, have you heard about the recent financial issues Crucible is currently going through? What are your thoughts and concerns going forward? How will this impact the industry and availability of CPM steels in your opinion?
As much as I love spyderco, they are over charging for the spy27 stuff. It's a lower tier powder steel and there is no reason it should be as expensive as they are asking for it. It's a great entry level powder steel and should be priced as such.
It's not a rumour. There are a number of articles about it. Crucible are applying for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy which isn't a good sign. Under Chapter 11 they would either have to drastically restructure to resolve their cash flow problem or sell the business. What this space ....
Many custom knife makers in the USA overestimate the value of their work. Many people, including myself are not going to pay those ridiculous prices. Ego holds no value for me.
Hi DCA & gang and/or community, I i have a question. I just got an M390 tactical knife that has a prescribed finger groove. I don't know whose fingers this design was modeled after, but it sure wasn't mine. I love the knife but am now looking at this as a project, as i got it at a considerable deal (thanks, KC). I want to knock down the finger groove but haven't messed with M390 before. Would a good set of files do the job, or would it be more time efficient to hit up my buddy with a grinder? Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide. Also, I'd dig seeing the Case Copper Kyranite Texas Toothpick handled next week fwiw. Cheers!
Hey DCA and Thomas, With the recent news of Crucible filing bankruptcy and leaving New York, what have you guys heard if anything about the future of thier steels. Any chance other makers could pick up thier formulas and processes. Or any word if they may relocate and continue operations elsewhere?
DCA and Thomas another wonderful video of new knives however don’t know if you’ve heard that this is probably should’ve been a question or not a question but this should’ve been probably for the Saturday video questions and answers the company that makes CPM is folding or is going bankrupt have you heard that rumor and is it true or is it just a rumor
I've been thinking about it. If the intellectual property gets sold, they may invest or HAVE to invest in serious men to actually smelt it so they don't drop the reputation of the alloys. Plus we still have Sandvik steels and Bohler steels so knives can still compete. Carpenter steels too . One alloy that is seldom to never seen is BG-42 and there's a PM version of it. Plus we would still have Damasteel with RWL-34 so it's not like we're out of options if they go down.
With the lightweight Spyderco models is it just the handles that are different? Eg if i buy the Mannix lightweight can i put normal aftermarket scales on them?
I can’t understand the Spyderco mystique🤷🏻♂️ Most of them have that hole and look alike, the handles look cheap and generic like you could pick one up at the mini mart for $12.00.
In the big picture probably not much. They simply switch to alternate steels from other manufacturers - providing there is enough supply in the market. The reality is that most mass producers select steels from a sales & marketing perspective rather than performance concerns so switching steels isn't really a biggy. I'm not saying that there won't be gaps for some steels where there are no competitive options at this time eg. Magnacut, Rex121. In a worst case scenario some of Crucible's steel recipes & patents may get sold off to other manufacturers who then recommence production. Watch this space ....
Anybody remember the old Saturday night live skits with Mike Meyers? “Ok so the pocket box cutter trend and how expensive spyderco and Benchmade are getting. Discuss.” (Although i think the para3 is a good deal)
Spyderco hasn’t come up with anything creative in years. Sprint runs and different steels seems to be their forte. I own a dozen or so but haven’t bought anything unless it’s on sale for less than $150. Great knives but the market has changed unless they’re selling to collectors.
I think we have reached the height of ridiculous, when they want $60 for a tiny utility knife. Gather your children around the TV so they can learn the definition of gall. I feel like Chaves might be sitting back and laughing at how many will buy it. Who am I though, if you think it is worth it... it's your money.
Spyderco charges benchmade prices for sort of/kind of s30v, undesirable locking mechanisms, and 2 inch wide pocket foot prints thanks to a goofy thumb hole. Who owns a Chaves? 🦗 🦗. All of Spyderco is ridiculous and space age 💩
Yea. They make my favorite knives, but I stopped support the brand due to insane prices. They are out of touch with their customers at this point.
Spiders and Butterflies are both crazy on their prices.
Maybe because they pay Americans a living wage with healthcare
I agree is totally crazy. If you think about the materials, the making process, etc, a reasonable selling price should be well below 80 USD.
Can't beat a classic - Case and slip joint combined. The Copper look is gorgeous - and it will go with any attire from Tuxedos to Jeans!
Love the banter with Thomas. You guys rock!
With how often DCA forgets to tell us the price, I think we should petition to have the price posted with the knife name on the screen.
That's a wonderful idea actually

Thanks DCA and Thomas!
That's no BS regarding how SPY-27 responds to a strop. Considering the edge retention for a stainless, it strops back to screaming sharp very easily.
I've been saying it's the most strop responsive powder steel on the market since it came out. Hell I just posted a short about it a few days ago discussing exactly that.
@Edcreviewer I'd agree with that.

Hold up. Its on new knives at knifecenter but its pre order and delayed by manufacturer. Fox Vulpis. Some at the link are compelling!
Spyderco should have made the Bodacious with the Ball Cage Lock like the Manix. MUCH better lock than the one sided Compression lock. (IMHO)

That Chaves looks like it comes with some nice sweat marks on the micarta too... lol
