"Built not bought" is this 1940 Chevy pickup owner's motto | Why I Drive #34

  • Curtis Vicknair is the patron saint of basketcase Craigslist project cars. Such was the case for his patina'd 1940 Chevrolet pickup which was little more than a grab bag of parts, bolts, and metal when he purchased it on Facebook Marketplace. "Building something yourself, there's a lot of pride in it," says Vicknair. "It's just that pride that you built something, and now you're driving it down the road. You can't go buy a new car and have that feeling."

Dream to have a garage like him. A wooden garage away from city, restoring vintage/classics with friends, and preserving the original paintor keeping the rust as it is, building a hot rod with with available parts in backyard. Nowadays everyone prefer new flasshy paint and big size chrome wheels. Very few people like him. Glad, my choice is same. 😂❤️
    Lovely video, hagerty.

Another great video and I can definitely relate. With the help of a friend, I restored a 1968 Charger R/T at the beginning of the 1980’s. It took several months but I finished and drove it to High School. Like many people, Life happened and off it went putting that dream into extreme hibernation. Fast forward a career and what seems a lifetime ago and I now have an all original 1968 Dodge Coronet (First year of the Super Bee) in my garage awaiting a new power train and several other updates. I spent all of last summer building myself a shop but it’s near completion now and I’m about to resurrect that mopar muscle dream again.

It wasn't fast...it wasn't prettiest, it wasn't nothing but a pickup truck and I could go just about anywhere with it and even some places a 4x4 wouldn't go...no joke. That ol' truck was the best!

The truck appears to be a '41 to '46 model year, or at least that's what the front clip tells me. To my knowledge no pickups were built during '43 and '44 and '45's were only built in the fall after the end of WW2. These were called the Art Deco Design and were sold into early '47 when the Advanced Design was offered. The Advanced Design lasted until mid 1955. I'm not sure if the '41-'46 fenders hood and grille were interchangeable with the '39-40. I'd be interested to know. I built a '46, similarly equipped and similar in appearance. Nice truck!
