forgot Zombie Revenge, played it for the first time a few months ago by accident and was completely surprised that my suspicions at the start of the game were true...it really is a HOTD spin off
I recently got into the series and fell in love with the campy nature but over all having genuine charm. Though I will bring up this one story when I was like 4 or 5 my aunt and uncle took me to the arcades to do some bowling and just have fun. As we were just heading out to go home, I see a one of house of the dead arcade cabinet not sure if it was 1, 2 or 3 with the game being on demo play. As it was in the demo play the zombie attacks the screen and in fear ran for my life as I thought that the zombie was trying to break out to attack me or something. So it took me a few years to finally face my fear and play HotD and slowly over time grow a love and a respect for the series.
I am right there with you. This series made me incredibly uncomfortable as a kid, but in getting older I have come to respect and appreciate it. Now I just wish I could find the arcade machines somewhere so I could face my fears and beat each one.
House of the Dead 2 will always be the best with it's locations and bad voice acting along with its Smithers villain. You forgot to include Zombie Revenge, great game. That Darts of the Dead game also looks awesome.
Actually, since it's so hard to find a CRT TV nowadays (and even harder to find the space to set one up for light gun games) I'd recommend getting the PC ports of HotD1 and 2. They're really great ports, and the PC port of HotD1 is leagues better than the Saturn version, having a smooth 60fps and higher resolution with an option for bilinear filtering. HotD1 PC is tricky to install on modern OS's since it's a 16-bit game, but once you do, you can use dgVoodoo2 to make the port more stable. Same thing for HotD2 PC.
Nah best way to play them is the m2 emulator for HoTD 1 and Dolphin Emulator to play the Wii version of HoTD 2&3 at up to 8K with all kinds of graphical enhancements.
Holy shit. Nightmare creatures gave me chills. I couldn't remember what that game was called and I never thought I could find out ever again. Thanks for bringing that game up.
This video is old, but if anyone wants to experience HOTD4 Special, then go to the PS3 store and buy HOTD4. Its part of the package and one of the reasons to be happy that they didn’t shut down the store. Truly hope they port it to current gen...
I am still waiting with my last tiny shreds of hope for another game. Doesn't matter if it's a sequel to overkill or just a sequel to the franchise, or a spinoff in the same universe. HotD has to be one of my favourite Sega franchises ever and I miss it so!
In all fairness the original Xbox was the dreamcasr successor. Originally it was suppose to be backwards compatible with dreamcast games but the architecture was too different.
I have fond memories of church youth group "lock-ins", where they shoved a bunch of teens in an arcade/amusement center and stuck all the games on free play. While we had lots of fun doing massive Daytona and Cruis'n multiplayer, the light gun games were always my favorite part. Beat HOTD 1 & 2, Time Crisis 2 (and maybe Crisis Zone?), The Lost World, and other stuff.
Fantastic video. There's SO much more to this series than I ever knew so this was educational to say the least. I have HoTD2 on the DC (with lightgun) but that's about it. I always wanted to try Overkill actually, so I might pick that up and add it to my collection of Wii games. The 2018 arcade game looks insane! Thanks again for another polished and informative video.
You didn't happen to use the House of the Dead logo in the title card from an ancient deviantArt account with a couple of House of the Dead wallpapers or the HoTD wiki did you? I'm happy it's good enough for your video! I made that logo YEARS AGO.
I remember playing House of The Dead 2 all the time as a young kid. I loved it so much. All the bosses were so bad ass and the cheesy voice acting had such a lovable charm and made me feel more comfortable knowing I wasn't alone playing the game :)
I played Scarlet Dawn last month, it's really easy but the cabinet is pretty neat. The seat jumps and shakes in time with the action and the wall behind you blows air on you in time with big explosions. Since your new gun fires so fast and since the zombies are all the same height you only need to wave the gun around from side-to-side to blow all of their heads off, even when they come at you a dozen at a time.
F**K YEAH! Love house of the dead, even made a song about it (with splatterhouse, titled "splatterhouse of the dead") Keep up the good work Slopes! Greetings from Brazil! Edit: No mention of "Zombie Revenge"? Or I just missed?

I didn't get to visit arcades much, but Sega's cabinets always drew me in when I could get to the local mall and watch people play. Over the years, there were a lot of zombie titles, and despite not being a zombie game fan, I found myself always being enthralled by the mechanics. Typing of the dead is probably one of my favorite spinoffs, and I actually got to play a bit of the Grindhouse version. Loved the video, had no idea the franchise was so extensive. :)
Brilliant stuff as always mate. I remember playing HOTD2 on Dreamcast and figuring out it was easier to beat with the controller - just mash shoot and reload the whole time and you essentially have unlimited bullets. The Magician was still tough though :)
I have the original Typing of the Dead on PC. it's pretty rad what with it being full of typing tutorials. Actually taught me how to touch type too. Shame the Overkill game didn't have those too.
I got to play House of the Dead 4 special at the ATEI 2004 show at Earls Court. It was an experience! It blows air on you at certain points of the level (in your face, back of your neck, ankles) During the levels of two player mode you have to work together to complete tasks. Come the end of the level you get a % of how compatable you are! It was really fun.
I REALLY hope your channel blows up soon, these documentaries are so underrated, brilliantly researched and have fantastic editing - never give up sir!! ❤
I did not know House of the Dead 4 Special was this rare. I kept talking about it every where and nobody else remembered it, BUT I played it with my brother in the arcades in the UAE, It had holes that blew air between our headrests whenever the giant boss was chasing us from behind and the whole machine kept moving up and down wildly at the car ride sequence with that giant boss. Also there was a love meter or something weird like that counted when you lost. It was the most fun and intense arcade experience I've ever felt and unfortunately ever will feel. The whole experience felt like a dream.
Man it feels good to come back to this video! Because the first House of the Dead is getting a remake as it was shown a little bit at Nintendo's Indie World Presentation 4-14-2021! Thank You ForeverEntertainment for bringing this series, no pun intended, back from the dead!
I actually got a chance to play House of the Dead 4 Special at Sega's arcade/bar game works in illinois. Not sure if they still have it there. I remembered dying really fast but the few ammount of time I had while playing it was pretty fun. It's like a mini roller coaster.

You and Larry have legitimately taken up my late nights for the last 6 months I feel so bad I never found you both earlier Ive never even played half these games but love learning none the less cheers mate :)
Man, I remember being a kid going to the local pizza inn and begging my parents for some quarters to play The house of the dead 1. Wish there were more arcades around nowadays.
Man Christmas 99 or 2000, my cousins had their Dreamcast hooked up in my aunt’s room, while a big pay per view boxing match was on the big screen tv in living room... but EVERYBODY was coming in the room to see/play/shoot HOUSE OF DEAD 2! Was so cool to see my old relatives be amazed by a video game! Haha. And scared too! Lol!
Honestly this game used to legitimately scare me. Something about the roaring organs and jittery zombies breaking into garish gore was groundbreaking. I used to actually have nightmares of the chainsaw guy XD
House of the Dead III is the only one I got to play the arcade machine for, and it was quite a lot of fun. I have seen IV's arcade machine but never got to actually give it a go. Of course, the temptation to play both players for dual SMGs was pretty strong.
I remember playing House of the Dead 4 Special at ATEI in Earls Court either in 2007 or 2008. Was one of the best things I ever played, you got spun around in the cart, it rocked you about a lot and air got blown in your face, was great fun. The year after they had the same machine there but it was playing Lets Go Jungle instead with the same 2 screen features. Was just as good fun playing that too.

Great one too, it’s basically Die Hard the arcade game but with zombies. A lot of people either forget, don’t realize, or don’t consider it an entry in the House of the Dead series but I absolutely do, it’s a great game and one of my favorites
The House of the Dead: Overkill is one of the best games I've ever bought for the Wii, it's just amazing. So many parties at my place end in an Overkill session; and it's always so much fun. I'd love to try that darts game too, but I have a feeling I would suck massively at it. Brilliant episode, Daniel - well done!
Man this series is part of my childhood for me being a kid that grew up in the 2000s (I was born about 5 months after HOTD1 hit arcades outside of Japan). I still remember going to my local Dave & Busters (yeah I live in the US) and playing 2 and/or 3 at least once and even got Overkill on the Wii the day of release. And I am most definitely gonna be playing Scarlet Dawn when I'm given the chance. Scarlet Dawn is actually at a Mega Arcade here in Louisville, KY called Round 1. Definitely need to check it out if given the chance, it is breathtaking.
I played one, TWICE at the Yorkshire Coast in England. I also have the remake of HoD1 on my Switch
Daniel I love the episode but you overlooked Zombie Revenge for Dreamcast.
I was thinking that!
Yes, it's tied to the first game in that you go to the original House of the Dead location at the end of the this game. it had an arcade release as well.
It even has some characters in the game, like G, present.
its a gem of a game, maybe the best zombie game ever, larry dropped the ball pretty hard. ohh helllo you
@@TeddyBelcher4kultrawide It was a bit clunky and too unforgiving at times, but I loved it and played it too death back then. I think I only ever finished it once.
Dan, I am afraid you forgot the spin off Zombie Revenge. I love the The House of the Dead imp ever since its first appearance in Laser Ghost. Personally I think the PC version of The House of the Dead is superior to the Saturn version.
One thing I always loved about these games was the music and sounds, very original, memorable and atmospheric
forgot Zombie Revenge, played it for the first time a few months ago by accident and was completely surprised that my suspicions at the start of the game were true...it really is a HOTD spin off
HOTD4 Special was an awesome experience. Especially that the chair turns around when the enemy is behind you, or when you're riding the car.
So it goes:
Overkill
HOTD 1
HOTD 2
HOTD 4 & special
HOTD scarlet dawn
HOTD 3
Overkill was diffinitely one of my favourite Wii games!
You didn't mention Zombies Revenge on the dreamcast at all one of the lesser known spin offs
Zombie revenge is non-canon
This video is old, but if anyone wants to experience HOTD4 Special, then go to the PS3 store and buy HOTD4. Its part of the package and one of the reasons to be happy that they didn’t shut down the store. Truly hope they port it to current gen...
You forgot Zombie Revenge on Dreamcast and the Arcade which is a The House of the Dead spinoff
Now we're talking...HOD on the Sega Saturn is the best.
The 90's were more unique than the 80's imo 😁😁😁
I played Scarlet Dawn last month, it's really easy but the cabinet is pretty neat. The seat jumps and shakes in time with the action and the wall behind you blows air on you in time with big explosions. Since your new gun fires so fast and since the zombies are all the same height you only need to wave the gun around from side-to-side to blow all of their heads off, even when they come at you a dozen at a time.
F**K YEAH! Love house of the dead, even made a song about it (with splatterhouse, titled "splatterhouse of the dead")
Keep up the good work Slopes!
Greetings from Brazil!
Edit: No mention of "Zombie Revenge"? Or I just missed?
Thanks. I love playing House of the Dead 2 with the light gun on the Dreamcast and especially on the arcade.

Anyway, beside the lack of Zombie Revenge (I'm kinda surprised that it wasnt there), it was a good video, Slope!
This is awesome! I love the House of the Dead series of games!
Oh man i never realized the zombie in Wreck it Ralph was from Hotd
He should do a complete history of Devil May Cry.
The history of the complete history Devil May Cry featuring Dante

Brilliant stuff as always mate. I remember playing HOTD2 on Dreamcast and figuring out it was easier to beat with the controller - just mash shoot and reload the whole time and you essentially have unlimited bullets. The Magician was still tough though :)
If you are excited about Project Judge, you gonna do a vid on Yakuza? :P
I have the original Typing of the Dead on PC. it's pretty rad what with it being full of typing tutorials. Actually taught me how to touch type too. Shame the Overkill game didn't have those too.
I'm disappointed. You forgot to mention the spinoff Zombie Revenge on the Dreamcast.
I was JUST thinking about making one of these! xD Great minds think alike. Awesome episode, as usual! Thank you for putting this together!
little too many ads, all partially unskippable.
Uh, AdBlock Plus Or uBlock Origin?
It's a 40+ minute video that I'm sure a lot of time and research went into making, let the man make a buck off his hard work
You dude don't know how long I've been waiting for this one
Oi, You got a loicense for that HoTD gun mate?
I got to play House of the Dead 4 special at the ATEI 2004 show at Earls Court. It was an experience! It blows air on you at certain points of the level (in your face, back of your neck, ankles)
During the levels of two player mode you have to work together to complete tasks. Come the end of the level you get a % of how compatable you are!
It was really fun.

Yet another fantastic complete history video. This series has seriously made your channel one of my most watched! Keep up the incredible work! :)
I REALLY hope your channel blows up soon, these documentaries are so underrated, brilliantly researched and have fantastic editing - never give up sir!! ❤
Good to know people still love this series, thanks for the hard work making this retrospective
:D appreciate it
I did not know House of the Dead 4 Special was this rare.
IIRC, Scarlet Dawn is in every Dave & Busters. I got to play it recently and it's been really fun. Glad to know the series wasn't forgotten entirely.
Goldman: Farewall friend
James: Who is your friend LOL
I want an Overkill sequel, it was hinted, and it's definitely a fave for a lot of people.
The house of the dead 4 special was actually at the old Las Vegas Gameworks I remember going and playing it with a friend it was the most terrifying thing ever.
You and Larry have legitimately taken up my late nights for the last 6 months I feel so bad I never found you both earlier Ive never even played half these games but love learning none the less cheers mate :)
I have played this game many times at arcades outside of the cinemas around Australia
Oh man, I had such fond memories of Typing of the Dead
House of the Dead III is the only one I got to play the arcade machine for, and it was quite a lot of fun.
I have seen IV's arcade machine but never got to actually give it a go. Of course, the temptation to play both players for dual SMGs was pretty strong.
Awesome video! The House of The Dead series is one of the greatest zombie FPS games EVER!
I still remember the day i got my dreamcast on launch day with house of the dead. Such good times with many, many hours put into it.
That last HotD Arcade is on Puerto Rico's only D&B's. It is amazing!
My mom and brother will love this video. Thanks for these awesome videos
Zombie Revenge for a while was my favorite game at a local arcade place from where I was going to college, and I guess I realized but never made the connection that the time that it is a House of the Dead spin off.
It's also worth mentioning that the Typing of the Dead Overkill on the PC also includes the light gun version. So you can play both ways if you like.
Time Crisis was one of the best lightgun games
House of the Dead was the first game I played on my PC way back in the day, so many memories.
Though the arcade series definitely deserves another rerelease to at least PC (I know HOTD1 will never get one though since the source code is apparently lost).
