I have a little tip that saves me a lot of seam ripping and keeps my pattern pieces straight especially when there is no wrong or right side to a fabric like linen. I put blue painters tape marked with a sharpie telling me what pattern piece it is on the right side of my fabric after I cut it out. Then when I sew i make sure my right sides (the sides with tape) are always touching. I also know up and down then to a pattern piece from the direction of the writing. Thanks for telling me about the Purl Soho shorts pattern.....made it and love it. I have used their free children's cloth ball and bonnet patterns before and adore those. .
It was worth all that trouble!! Your outfit is so fashionably chic!!! As for your binding problem of laying flat--a narrower binding doesn’t give you that problem. If you want to use a wider binding, you have to pin the outside edge down flat (not the edge you will be sewing to the garment first) and then pin the edge you will be sewing and ease in the extra binding!! The circumference of the armhole 1” in from the edge is longer than the circumference of the actual arm hole edge, so you have to get the longer circumference to fit flat first! I hope I explained that right-it’s hard to put into words, without a visual!!!
Lovely makes! That top is gorgeous. And I appreciate the walk through of making the pants and what went wrong. Happens to all of us and you ended up with a great outfit!
Love your tops! The bias armhole question...are you steam ironing it before installing it, and curving it on your ironing board while pressing? That should help!
Huuuge thumbs up for both of the garments, you did an AMAZING job! ❤️ The top is so neat and creative and the bottoms... just dreamy :) And together it is much more feminine than I’d say! Thanks for the inspiration, I have to find such lovely fabric ;))
You should be patting yourself on the back. That top is so lovely. The lines and pattern matching have been executed beautifully. Love the play suit look! And those shorts!
Love your podcast. You ask about the problem with your bias laying flat. I have two things that could work. First sew from the top of your sleeve down to under arm. Then sew at top of sleeve , sewing down to the under arm. An example of doing this way of sewing is the inside seam .with some fabric I have had to sew the inside down to ankle, and do the other side down to ankle. The second way to help the bias tape to lay flat is be careful to not stretch the tape . Give it all the room it needs. I hope this might help. Take care, 👵 Sally
You gave me hope today....glad to see your determination and continuing to sew and make it right. I loved your outfits! Good job! Thanks so much for sharing. Sometimes when I hit a mistake, I just want to quit. I havent been sewing in awhile and you make me want to make my own outfits. Thank you.
Yes! You sure did pretty good with that striped top, good job! And yes, that is what I began to think also about your slacks, that those nice stripes (especially with your top) did not need a waistband at all. Did you know you could sew girl?!
I don't know what it is, but I have never had good finishing luck with purchased bias tape. I always make my own out of the fabric I am using for the garment. I also use the bias tape makers. You can purchase them in all sizes. Hope this helps!!
Beautiful dress. I had never heard of the art gallery tunic before you mentioned it, but I really like it. I love your separates jumpsuit too! So look forward to all your vlogs.
Great job with the stripe manipulation on the top Lisa! Looks awesome:) I like the jumpsuit look of the matching top & bottoms. I have yet to make a pair of bottoms (besides leggings and a catsuit😁).
I love all your makes, we have a very similar aesthetic , but not the same figure at all. One way to help with bias binding is to iron it with plenty of steam, into a tightish curve, prior to applying to the armhole. So then you are sewing 2 curves together. The other thing is to make sure you are not using too wide a bias binding for tight curves. I would only use 16mm for an arm hole binding.
Thanks! You know, I pressed the binding into a curve for the neck, but was impatient to finish and didn’t take the time to do it on the arm binding. I’m sure that’s it!
Hi Lisa.. First of all 👏 👏👏 A great job done with all your sewing projects!! I came across your channel for the first time.. and loved this video.. 👍👌 I appreciate your honest confessions 😉 can relate myself with the same situations!! Loved the details of the crop top and modifications made with the pattern 😍 My most favourite one is the crop top paired with culottes😍 Keep up the great work!! Definitely a pat on the back moment after completing a project and an automatic bright smile on the face!!
Hey Lisa I love the way you did the top it looks so cool! For trousers (because I am short) I always measure the crotch depth on the pattern pieces now and then deduct the seam allowances and see how it matches up to my measurements making adjustments where necessary. Seems to work a treat. 😁👍
Most of my summer clothes are sleeveless and I use bias tape on necklines and armholes whenever possible ( I hate facings that want to poke out). I am thinking that the secret to a nice flat bias finish is how much/little you stretch it around the curve. If you don't stretch it at all when sewing it to the right side - there will be too much of it when you turn it to the inside as the circumference is smaller. . . I think that makes sense ?
Lisa, I'm just making New Look 6507 which uses bias bound armholes and it tells you to attach the unfolded bias to the right side of the armholes and then understitch through the bias into the sleeve allowance before you fold the bias to the inside and stitch and it works! it stops the armhole flipping out, try it and see if it works for you xx
Hello Lisa! I love the Gallery dress/tunic you're wearing and I enjoy your YT channel! I recently purchased the Gallery dress pattern after watching this video several weeks ago. I've cut out the pattern pieces but I'm struggling on what size to make. The Finished Measurements chart has size 0 for a 38in bust. I'm around 34in in the bust but I've never been a size 0. What size did you make? I also started reading the instructions and I was confused on constructing the placket. I've made plackets before but these directions/pictures don't quite make sense. Thanks a bunch!
Hi there! Yes. The placket is a little challenging, for sure- luckily, there is a Sew along on the Liesl and Co blog, and you can follow along step by step. It’s right here: oliverands.com/community/groups/sew-alongs/forum/topic/gallery-tunic-dress-sew-along/ As for size, this pattern has a lot of ease. I am a 34 bust and 37 hip- I made a 4 and it has lots of room in it. The good news is, once you figure out your perfect size it will be a go-to pattern! Let me know how it goes- and tag me on IG if you are posting it. ;)
Hi Lisa, well done for succeeding on the 'me made may' so far 👍. Loving your makes and the top with the angled lines is gorgeous and well done for repairing the culottes which looked fabulous on you 💞 . I haven't made any fitted pants yet but yours are an inspiration. Funnily enough I have stylearc's Teddy pants but they may be a bit difficult for my first pant make. I made the Teddy top but it's turned out way too big so I have to try that again. Muslins are a good thing definitely 😉. Great video Lisa and thanks so much for sharing and happy sewing 😊😘
If your using store bought bias binding like the one that I kinda saw on your top you need to fold it in half before you attach it. Its too wide. Nothing over 3/8 of an inch will lay flat on a curved edge. If dosnt matter whether you get double fo!d or single fold tape they are both 1 inch wide originally just folded differently. If you make your own self bias you can cut narrower. Hope this helps
I’m a year late to the party, but I hope you remember which Craftsy class helped you install your invisible zipper. I’m still looking for the right one to help me. Thanks, and love your channel!
Hi Lisa. RE: Bias Binding: I have been using "Steam A Seam 2 Lite" on areas such as arms-eye, neck bindings, etc. on knits and woven garments. Usually I make my own binding from silk. I love the striped outfit! So brave to cut up the pattern, then to match the stripes, move the zipper, change the neckline and it all turned out so beautiful! Just wonderful!! Actually, I think I like yours better because CH was a bit busier wasn't it? I made my first muslin this week and I felt much better about if it didn't work out. I love the culottes with the waistband also. Thank you for sharing. Oh great idea using the salvage edge, looks modern & now.
Thank you! I should have mentioned that I did trace the pattern off before cutting it. I didn’t cut the original. I was really proud that I was able to make changes and have them work out- I am still learning so much each time I sew. ;)
Beautiful pieces Lisa! I love your gallery tonight dress! I can’t wait to make another one of these tunics in that dress you made is fabulous! So comfy looking too! You did an astronomical job on your denim top and pants! I still can’t believe that you’ve only been sewing for a short period of time… It’s amazing! I’ve really been enjoying your #MMMay18 too! I have that pattern, but scared to sew it, the last pair of pants I sewed were too small! Did you find the finished garments true to size? Thanks Victoria PS Loved your top!
Do you know how many times I’ve put sleeves upside down 🤦🏼♀️ I have to make a point to think when I pin them I want to make the dress love it so cute perfect for miami
Gday Lovely. How are you? Your makes are great & great pictures. Aaawww don`t be to disheartened over the pants, they turned out great in the end, I really felt your frustration, I have been exactly where you have been (think we all have) I remember a stuffed bunny I had to sew with an outfit as well, what should of taken maybe 3 hrs took 7 hrs! Well done on your make especially for the top!! I am interested in the answer for the bias, i really want to get better at using bias. I am happy I am not the only struggling with pants sometimes haha thanks for sharing! congrats for the 4k 😊🙌🙌
Someone may have already commented this but: The inner curve is shorter in length than the outer curve so it takes more fabric to go around the outer edge of the curved portion of the armhole than it does at the seam line (inner edge). You have to ease that extra fabric in at the seam line when sewing the curve so that when you flip the bias tape to the wrong side, there's enough fabric in that area to enable it to lay flat. Another way of saying this is match the fabric up at the outer edge of the bias first and then pin at the seam line, easing in the excess at the seam line when sewing.
I can’t find it now either- but I checked the comment on the original and The TH-cam subscriber name is “Ishy Lynn”, so sadly it’s a different Linda. So sorry!
I'm wondering if the fit of the pants has more to do with the measurements from the belly button down thru the crotch and up to the middle of the small of the back. If you measure yourself and measure the front and back pattern pieces accordingly and compare.Hope you know what I mean.
I think the top and cropped trousers / culottes turned out beautifully! I find your perseverance inspiring :) I'm looking for a simple pair of culottes and I think this pattern might be exactly what i need, yay :) . so thank you, you have just saved me a lot of time!

Absolutely!
Gorgeous makes Lisa, your top looks so well made. Bravo on the stripes and pattern adaptations.
Nicely done on the chevrons! Stripe matching is always 120% worth the extra effort!
Thanks, Elizabeth! 😘
You did a great job on your makes. I like that your perseverance really paid off. Thank You for your video.
In spite of the fact that you feel the clothes are too loose, they look fabulous. Nothing wrong with loose in pants!

Duh... I read all the comments to see if anyone else had asked, but never noticed that there were show notes! Sorry to have bothered you.
No bother at all! Happy to facilitate easier zipper insertion. :):)
If you sort of pre press your bias tape into the shape it will go that helps. Hope that’s helpful 😃
I think I did skip that step- so impatient! 😉

I’ll direct message you later… I have a question for you.
Aw, thanks, Myra! I am learning. :)
Your May makes are fabulous. I especially loved the culotte set. Excellent job. You have such great patience which makes for a great seamstress.
Thanks, Joyce! I don’t feel very patient in the moment! Lol

Really good makes. Love the outfit.
I am so glad I found you - we have the same taste!!! :)

Well done on your make especially for the top!! I am interested in the answer for the bias, i really want to get better at using bias. I am happy I am not the only struggling with pants sometimes haha thanks for sharing! congrats for the 4k 😊🙌🙌
Cutting on the bias was really easy- you just have to be careful not to stretch out after it’s cut.
And Sew On oh I thought you meant how to sew bias tape on armholes!
