I have skinned a lot of deer and even MORE furbearers.. I tried this method on a doe today.. It was SO FRIGGIN' EASY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I ringed the neck and went down the back. Only things I did different were I did take off the lower parts of the legs, to me it's just easier with them out of the way. And I used a "Muddy Deluxe Skinning Tool". You grab the skin with that and it's so easy. GREAT VIDEO and thanks for sharing!
I am 80 years old and have skinned a lot of deer, but this method of doing it has really impressed me. I am going hunting this weekend in Illinois and if I am lucky and get one I will try this way. Thanks for the video.

You ought to put two anchors in the floor with two removable eye bolts to tie the hind feet down so it won't spin around on ya, or from the ceiling for the front feet, I use Para cord to tie the legs to something to keep mine from spinning, but I've been skinning mine just like you for over 25 years.

Jason, After watching many of your deer hunting videos especially the ones about tree stands, and safety gear (I copied your lineman belt and safety tether), I finally got to put this skinning video and the quartering video to use today. Thank you for creating these videos. I have found them extremely educational.
My family has always hung ours by the neck. A lot of my friends think i am nuts but its easier and faster when you start to quarter one up. I did learn a slick thing with that carpet knife that was cool. I have watch friends gut them hanging by the hind feet and I always laugh and tell them they are fighting the rib cage cause it holds everything inside, hanging them by the neck everything falls right down into the cleaning bucket, then just skin it and everything is ready to haul off.

I'm different than everyone, it seems. Everyone's always looking for the 'fastest' way to skin a deer. For me, it's one of my favourite parts. Crack some beers and work away. I'm a knife-nut too, so it's a time i get to utilize them. For me, it's an enjoyed process, not something i'm just trying to get done.
Thats awesome that you enjoy skinning that much! Love that you have that as part of the fun. Most of us skinning is just in the way of processing meat. We all need to slow down and think more like you are and enjoy the skinning more. Thank you for the great comment.
Your way helps me a lot the way you explain it reminds me of how I explain things at work. People often say I think way outside the box lol but guess who they work for?
The only thing I would add is to use catfish skinners for holding the skin. Your hands will be further from the knife and it is easier to use both hands to pull the skin down. (My husband and I have been skinning deer with the head up for many decades.)
This kind of stuff is really helpful for new hunters... it's great you do it! This is just how I was taught to do it. The only difference is we would sawzall the leg ends off, but I think I will stop doing that. Our deer get tested for cwd, and I like to avoid cutting bone when I can.
Yeah I used to cut the leg bones too as i was taught that way. then when I started boning deer in the field I realized i can bone them out with out cutting the legs there so why bother cutting them at home. Stopped and lever looked back.

How i was shown to skin a deer head up. My brother in laws and nephews do it by the back legs. Showed up to help my nephew skin his and I didn’t even know how to start it. He showed me but,we had hair all over the meat. Glad to see some still do it this way.
Thanks. The back cut is handy for winter deer when you don't jave a heated garage and fighting half frozen deer. Or for people like my neighbor who has little grip in his hands.
Those carpet knife blake’s are the ‘Beez-kneezz when you have a trapping shack full of critters…quick easy prep before the real work begins. And beaver skinning knifes are my favorite for removing all hides…makes a decent boning knife too. 👍👍

Back in 80's, the hide was worth a few dollars (notice that I didn't say "bucks"). Then the synthetics came about. I don't think that I could even SELL a deer hide these days. This guy does it almost every way that I was taught (by my Dad) on how to skin a deer. Except, the cut down the backbone. But, I will try that! The easier, the better!
Nice job man. The hook blades are awesome. I trap and use them all the time when I'm putting up fur. They are great for splitting tails. Have a great season.
Jason, thanks again for your informative videos. Concerning aging venison. What do you do? I live in NC and I can’t hang the deer or don’t have access to walk in cooler. Do you dry age in a fridge or leave in an ice cooler for a few days? Thanks for any input.
Now that I'm in the south as well I will age them as boned out muscles in a cooler with frozen water bottles for a day or 2. Have one on ice right now doing exactly that I'm gonna process tomorrow
Jason, I appreciate the insight and sharing your method. As you said many times, there is no right or wrong way to get it done as long as you get it done. One key thing I learned and appreciated with your method is the safety factor of the carpet blades. I have seen many folks get careless with there knife in those awkward areas like between the front shoulders. Question, do you find it better or easier to hide the animal when warm or no real preference? I have done both depending on conditions and time available but prefer to do it warm for ease, easier on the fingers and cools meat off quicker.
Yep warm is so much easier. When warm you barely have to do any knife work just pull the hide off. When I used to trap coyotes I would carry the mini gambrel right in the truck and skin them in the field immediately as it s was easier. If you wait couple hours on a coyote it takes 3 times as long as the hide sticks like glue.
I tried to tell some hunters about skinning without first gutting it and they claimed it could not be done. In Texas we do it a little different and even that differs from region to region.
I skin, quarter, and bone out all the meat with out gutting them all the time on my out of state hunts. its called the gutless method, developed by elk hunters. I do it a few times a year. I can have a deer bones out and in the pack in about 45 minutes.
@@johnbowhunter7676 yep I use the gutless most of the time as well. Especially in hills or hunt where I have to bone out the deer by law to bring it home. Michigan won't let you bring a whole deer in from many states. Has to be boned out first.
In 1974 on my first day of field training in the Baltimore PD, my FTO took me to a Kosher slaughterhouse, to test my stomach I suppose. The Rabbis skinned the beef head up like you. Since the animals were kosher slaughtered immediately before then hung up, and gutted before skinning. Head up allowed them to roll stainless steel wheelbarrows up under the carcass so the innards spilled neatly into the barrows. Then they commence skinning. The kosher environment was very clean, all white tile and stainless steel. Next we went to non-kosher sheep slaughter house, which was a bloody, stinking mess.
I’m glad I found your video I just bought those carpet blades with skinning in mind! I think I’ll try this out it always helps to watch how others skin you can always learn something new

I’ve killed and skinned easily 50 or more deer over the years and always skinned it head down. I killed a doe today and decided to try this method. It was way easier than how I have skinned deer in the past. Many thanks.

I go head up too always have when processing deer as this makes the most sense when doing the cutting however I have to sometimes just get it done since the place we do it at is not heated. Once at parents old house doing this now at there new house same problem is not heated nor do you want heat when doing this anyhow from experience. Our house, one my brother and I own 60% me and 40% him does not have a place to do this at yet but should in a year or two.
The oly way to get hair on the meat would be to be cutting in the wrong places. When skinning all cuts other than the ring cuts should be made under the hide not on the hair side. Might of been because you are not used to doing it that way and made some cuts in places that were not needed. Not sure otherwise.
i do the ring cuts with the carpet blade. i grind the tip down some because FLA deer don't have much fat . it helps when you split the belly not to cut to deep . any thing that helps a fellow hunter should enjoyed
Same way I do it , it's cool to see someone else does it , But I cut the legs off with a sawzall first . I always said it's much easier to skin a half of deer twice than a whole deer once . 👍
I’ve skinned 300+ deer in my 45 years of hunting. I also learned to skin deer by hanging them like you do. I’ve had many negative comments until they saw how quick it is like this. I will admit in the last few years I have used a gut hook knife but I like your carpet knife idea and I will be trying it. Just goes to show you that you can always learn something new. very interesting , I have never deer hunted but I know some people that do and I am not sure how they skin them out but it looks like your way would be a lot easier .
How much meat is in the front shoulders of a dear? I watched people with rifles shoot through the shoulders and am wondering how much food they loose? I hunted moose back in Alaska. I was taught to shoot hart and lung was the best.

I'm definitely a little faster if I hang em by the neck, but almost all of my deer are just a few minutes from the kill site to the skinning rack so I don't gut mine in the field. So since I don't gut em in the field I hang mine head down that way if anything gets contaminated it's on the rib cage or the front shoulders wich I will clean up with a knife, but I don't have to worry about any contamination on the back hams or loins. On the rare occasion I get an invite to hunt and I'm away from home then I most definitely gut in the field, in that case I would for sure hang em by the neck! I live in the south so I age my deer after they've been skinned and gutted, don't have the luxury of cold weather :) !

@@jasonnester9514 yep they work great for gutting as well. Have a buddy down south where they don't gut them in the field and for him one quick cut with the hooked blade and everything falls out. Literally 1 minute to gut them.
Never thought about doing the deer like that, always just done it a traditional way. This is gonna be the new way I skin a deer and gutting it would probably be a lot easier. Great video!

I like the idea of the hook blade knife you used but I’ve tried Amazon and can’t find one like yours. Can you send me the model of that knife you used? I’m sure others would like to know as well. Oh and I’ve always hung my deer head up it’s so much easier to take the hide off than head down! Great video.

Nice! This is the way me and my dad do it exactly and all my relatives. Did you get the hunt of that deer on film? Even if you do not have any footage of a kill hunt, I would like to see some hunting footage soon! I always like when you are walking in to your stand or are in your stand and are explaining your reasoning for the setup and what you see in the advantages of that spot. I think that this is an awesome hunting channel!
I did not film the hunt on this deer as it was opening morning. But I did film a hunt a couple days later (didn't kill anything) but gonna be an amazing video with alot of info and detail and cyber scouting before, etc. Will be publishing soon

Find a video on cutting the legs in the joints. No saw needed. One knife to do the whole quartering and skinning.

Yep I always skin head up. Less hair and less hassle and less blood collecting and pooling in the neck meat.

Yep same reason I stopped trapping. Fur prices crashed.

I skin, quarter, and bone out all the meat with out gutting them all the time on my out of state hunts. its called the gutless method, developed by elk hunters. I do it a few times a year. I can have a deer bones out and in the pack in about 45 minutes.
Yep... I prefer gutless method, and always do it when I can.
@@johnbowhunter7676 yep I use the gutless most of the time as well. Especially in hills or hunt where I have to bone out the deer by law to bring it home. Michigan won't let you bring a whole deer in from many states. Has to be boned out first.

Jason after the skinning, when you grind venison to make links. Do you use any binding agent or what do you put in with deer to bind
We don't make links or do any stuffing. I take the meat to our local processor to make our sausage and Jerky so I sont know what they use.
In 1974 on my first day of field training in the Baltimore PD, my FTO took me to a Kosher slaughterhouse, to test my stomach I suppose. The Rabbis skinned the beef head up like you. Since the animals were kosher slaughtered immediately before then hung up, and gutted before skinning. Head up allowed them to roll stainless steel wheelbarrows up under the carcass so the innards spilled neatly into the barrows. Then they commence skinning. The kosher environment was very clean, all white tile and stainless steel. Next we went to non-kosher sheep slaughter house, which was a bloody, stinking mess.

I’ve heard you can use compressed air blasts to help separate the hide from the carcass. Like a small tube shaped nozzle. Have you ever heard of this?
you can and it works good. I have never done it but have seen it done by taxidermists.

I’ve killed and skinned easily 50 or more deer over the years and always skinned it head down. I killed a doe today and decided to try this method. It was way easier than how I have skinned deer in the past. Many thanks.

I go head up too always have when processing deer as this makes the most sense when doing the cutting however I have to sometimes just get it done since the place we do it at is not heated. Once at parents old house doing this now at there new house same problem is not heated nor do you want heat when doing this anyhow from experience. Our house, one my brother and I own 60% me and 40% him does not have a place to do this at yet but should in a year or two.
I tried this for the first time and felt like I got more hair on the meat than usual. Any suggestions to prevent this in future?
The oly way to get hair on the meat would be to be cutting in the wrong places. When skinning all cuts other than the ring cuts should be made under the hide not on the hair side. Might of been because you are not used to doing it that way and made some cuts in places that were not needed. Not sure otherwise.
A trick I use when skinning in my garage is to put a small kiddy pool under the deer to catch the blood
Great idea. I jave a pressure washing business, so I just pour 12% bleach on the floor when do and back to spotless.
Cheap blue tarp from harbor freight. Less trauma to your children when they see their pool covered in blood. 😁

i do the ring cuts with the carpet blade. i grind the tip down some because FLA deer don't have much fat . it helps when you split the belly not to cut to deep . any thing that helps a fellow hunter should enjoyed

I’ve skinned 300+ deer in my 45 years of hunting. I also learned to skin deer by hanging them like you do. I’ve had many negative comments until they saw how quick it is like this. I will admit in the last few years I have used a gut hook knife but I like your carpet knife idea and I will be trying it. Just goes to show you that you can always learn something new. How much meat is in the front shoulders of a dear? I watched people with rifles shoot through the shoulders and am wondering how much food they loose? I hunted moose back in Alaska. I was taught to shoot hart and lung was the best.
Depends on the hit and if the arrow stays in. But I bet shoulders yield about 5 pounds of meat each.

I'm definitely a little faster if I hang em by the neck, but almost all of my deer are just a few minutes from the kill site to the skinning rack so I don't gut mine in the field. So since I don't gut em in the field I hang mine head down that way if anything gets contaminated it's on the rib cage or the front shoulders wich I will clean up with a knife, but I don't have to worry about any contamination on the back hams or loins. On the rare occasion I get an invite to hunt and I'm away from home then I most definitely gut in the field, in that case I would for sure hang em by the neck! I live in the south so I age my deer after they've been skinned and gutted, don't have the luxury of cold weather :) !

@@jasonnester9514 yep they work great for gutting as well. Have a buddy down south where they don't gut them in the field and for him one quick cut with the hooked blade and everything falls out. Literally 1 minute to gut them.

I did one and all I did was break the branch the deer was hanging on and get the deer all dirty...lol

I like the idea of the hook blade knife you used but I’ve tried Amazon and can’t find one like yours. Can you send me the model of that knife you used? I’m sure others would like to know as well. Oh and I’ve always hung my deer head up it’s so much easier to take the hide off than head down! Great video.

Nice! This is the way me and my dad do it exactly and all my relatives. Did you get the hunt of that deer on film? Even if you do not have any footage of a kill hunt, I would like to see some hunting footage soon! I always like when you are walking in to your stand or are in your stand and are explaining your reasoning for the setup and what you see in the advantages of that spot. I think that this is an awesome hunting channel!
I did not film the hunt on this deer as it was opening morning. But I did film a hunt a couple days later (didn't kill anything) but gonna be an amazing video with alot of info and detail and cyber scouting before, etc. Will be publishing soon
