    Wanted to say a big thank you for the support on this one. I hope this video shows how tricky and difficult high level karting can be when you're not quite on it.
    The main issues for me this year have been being over the weight limit and a lack of test days. The lack of testing has meant the driving style has not yet become natural to me just yet.
    Either way, thank you all for the support on this series!

    Throttle control is the key to moving from a good to a great Rotax driver. That large carb is a killer at low speed, the engine just bogs down and haults all momentum, and as you're learning momentum is a huge part of kart racing. As a former Canadian Rotax champ, the best tip I can give is to never take your foot 100% off the throttle. In low speed corners you should be able to just slightly feather the throttle to keep the RPMs up (maybe 10-15% of the throttle) without having the engine overpower you so you run wide/offline. The strength of the Rotax engine lies in the mid range of its RPMs, so keeping the RPMs up to prevent bogging down will easily increase your pace. Using this technique takes some practice, but its a great way to keep your RPMs up and use the strengths of that Rotax. I'd also practice a smoother throttle application like some of the other comments are mentioning! Good luck!

      So sorta how you'd drive old turbo F1 cars in the 80s and Group B rally cars. Feather the throttle to keep the turbo spooled...except it's a cart lmao

      That stupid huge carb kills that engine tbh. The power valve combined doesn’t help either. I never went Senior Rotax I jumped from Juniors to ICC/KZ. When I have tested Senior engines I’ve found the same, keeping the revs up in low speed corners, as wanky as it sounds, is the way to be quick

      @@Nox_Desiree basically. And I can tell you from experience, a Rotax with a modified power valve (around 40ish hp vs the 30hp ish in SGTs class) feels like it actually has a turbo lol. Just nothing, nothing, nothing and then ALL of the power lol

      yeaaah... when the huge carb is opened to fast, the flow of gasolin from the nozzle actually stops and the engine is suuuuper lean, thereby no forward momentum.
      that said, the steering also had alot of negative camber - which is great for high speed corners and exit grib - BUT, what was needed here was more jacking of the kart to keep the inside wheel up so it could run free.
      and .. MXC rims in rotax.... is there at any point THAT much grib? i dont get it, why run these rims in slippery conditions (just rained... cant be much grib on that track)
      judging from the legs on the driver - i would move back the seat as well, give more caster+camber and stiffen front.... i would basically reset that setup of that kart - stiffer rims etc. N axle and go!
      @super GT - count on the gas ... 1,2,3,4,5 while giving full throttle out of every corner.... this will give your carb time to feed the engine enough gasolin to propel you at light speed :D

      I was just about to comment, that you will have no power if you go flatout at low rpms due to the oversized carb. need to feather the throttle at low rpm, until it gets going, then you can go progressivly up to 100% throttle. Carrying momentum is also a huge key in maintaing those higer rpms so you dont have to wait on the engine to accelerate.

    aye, Steve, I drive Rotax as well and I was watching how you apply the gas and I think you were pressing it too fast because unlike the iame the rotax has a much bigger carburetor, therefore it overflows the engine in Rotax so you need to be more smooth on the application of the gas pedal don't press it too fast like iame.

      I drove my first rotax race last weekend and coming from 4 strokes I definitely had issues jumping on the gas too hard.

      yes this is true fellow junior rotax driver here. i learnt the hard way by applying to much throttle to fast for like a couple of laps and i had to retire because my spark plug went

    I used to race rotax light in Australia. Western Australian tracks such as Albany and Kalgoolie are incredibly bumpy. With the kart you have to change the stiffness of the chassis based on track. On that track you should of had a stiffer axle at the back. The more flex you have in the rear end the more the engine will bog down (think of it as a rope strangling the engine). You are way way to quick on the throttle which is flooding the engine causing it to bog down even more. Easier on the throttle and smoother and direct streering will make your lap times alot quicker. Keep up the good work!

    As you stated in the video, the bogging off the slow hairpin is because you might be jumping on the throttle too fast at low RPM, especially if the tune, needle and air screw isn't quite right-an old characteristic of the Rotax engine with its large carburettor.

      Yeah, it sounds like it's flooding at low rpm which could be anything from his throttle applications to just carb set up, I'd say probably an unhealthy mix of the 2

      Sounds like the old, pre-power valve TZ250 Yamaha's I used to race back in the 80's. Getting the jets right was one thing, but applying the throttle correctly was something else.

    Fellow rotax racer here and i suggest you try these different things:
    1. Try adjusting your jetting, might be too rich on the low end.
    2. Try trail breaking as this may keep the rpms of the engine up.
    3. Stop accelerating as if the throttle is an on-off switch, it's proportional, go eazy on it and wait for the engine to get up to speed before you go full gas, otherwise the engine WILL bog down.

    I race a Rotax here in aus Steve, I was also having bad runs out of slow corners, thing is with the Rotax you really need to ease on the power very very gradually. Like put quarter throttle until you feel the motor pick up then you can smash it

    Hi Steve, looking at the the brand new set of tyres you put on for practice they look pretty grained after the session. You might be working the tyres too much when they’re cold, which won’t return best results after they warm up. (You get a steep temperature gradient between the surface and core of the tyre).
    Try warming the tyres slower by taking a couple of easy laps especially on a brand new set and they’ll pay you back later.

    Most of your problems look like they are stemming from your steering inputs, you need to smooth it out that will calm down the rear and the kart won't be working as hard and then the tyres won't be overworking. If you watch it back you take at least 2-3 jabs at the steering per corner instead of 1 smooth input which just asks more of the rear tyre.

    I know how tough it is to suffer at karting weekends, I did it for a looooooong time. Best thing is to try getting someone else in the seat so you can see if it’s the kart or you. Then work on whichever one it is. It looks like poor setup and gearing issue for me…. Plus a little bit of the slow in fast out issue.

    biggest tip I could give you is to be calmer on the wheel and not put in harsh inputs. that's one of the reasons you were slower coming out of that one corner. and also don't try to do more than the kart can handle. don't ask 110% because you end up losing more time when you try to do too much. some of the best racers I've met in x30 said they actually feel slow when driving even tho they're some of the fastest in Europe

    you're doing so well steve. You were fast in club 100 and now you have to unlearn and relearn in these karts. And that is a hard thing to do. plus jumping around from track to track

    Hate race weekends like this, always the worst feeling when everything seems to go wrong and the pace is off - good effort though still 🤙🏽
    Edit: the one thing I actually regret is the one time I quit in the middle of a race going wrong - feels demoralising in the moment but it’s the quitting that gets me the most mad looking back on it

    You need another season in this mate. Hope you continue, a lot of it is experience too and preparation. Don't lose heart, you have natural talent! Keep it going!
    This off-season will be where most of your improvement will come if you stick with it. Right now, everything is coming at you like light speed but next season, it will start to click. It is all about that seat time!

    Steve, great video! Thanks for sharing despite being a frustrating week end. This will sound cookie cutter but it's true you learn the most from bad performances. You'll adapt and come back strong, I have faith and so should you! Great to see so much great advice being offered by other Rotax drivers. This should give you confidence that there are a lot of things you can try and improve on, which is much better than not knowing wtf is going on.

    Really enjoying these. Good to see some old faces around as well. Totally agree about the seat time. You know how much karting I used to do and when I switched to cars it was a real shock to the system how little seat time you actually get. Takes ages to get the hang of things that seemed to click straightaway in the lower ranks of karting.

    As stated in many of the brilliant comments below, there are several factors that all contribute to the bogging down. From what I have seen of a friend's karting experiences, the most complex, elusive and infinite thing about setting up the kart is having the correct tune, needle and air screw! Sure geometry, ratios, pressures and axle are all important but carb settings is a complexity in itself......

    Really shows the competition in this level of karting. One thing that I’d love to see though is a rear camera facing behind you, I think that would be really cool especially on these types of races where a few people are overtaking. Love the vid.

    One trick to practice smoother steering inputs is to attach tiewraps on either side of the top of your steeringwheel. Then practice that the tiewraps always have to point to where you have to go. So corrections mean that its off target, meaning youre doing it wrong. Just practicing that already helps a lot.

    Great video! The only advice I can give you is I noticed on the 1st heat especially on the formation lap you went on the dirty side of the track, so next time try stay tight to the kart infront and take they’re line so they can pick up all the rubber on the outside and you’ll have clean tires.

    Rotax vs x30 throttle control is totally different. You have to slowly feed the throttle on in a rotax. You can't just lay the boot in like in x30. The big carb and power valve don't work when you just flatten the throttle. Be smooth like your nursing a baby with your foot

    Hey mate I don’t know if anyone has told you before but the Rotax is incredibly hard to learn properly,
    In real low speed corners you have to give it bugger all throttle or it just bogs down and goes no where as you have learnt from this event, extremely slow and smooth application is the best way to get a good corner exit,
    Also in regards to Turn 1, corners similar to this you benefit a lot from finding the point you can accelerate up to, lifting completely and then coasting all the way to the apex before accelerating away
    It sounds extremely counter intuitive but every time you touch or blip the throttle the kart wants to straighten out and it stops jacking and turning,
    You’ll be amazed by how much time you would gain from accelerating less and coasting more

    Definitely flooding carb off tight corner. Need to bring your foot off to half or 3 quarter throttle until the rpms begin to come up, then slowly feed to full throttle. I really think that was most of your time loss and not the kart handling or even driving. Other than that, just need to work on being smooth with steering from mid corner off to not bind up kart.

    I think I might have had a big crash here during University karting back in 2000/1. I t-boned someone who had spun in the middle of the track and flew right over the top of them. Couldn't sit down or stand up properly for a week.

    You handled a rough pineapple weekend well Steve, it's never fun to have a bad one, but they happen to everyone.
    There is no replacement for laps in the class you want to race in. The X30 maybe the more suitable class for you next year, it seemed to suit you a little better at this time, you do need to go around again next year.

    Hey Steve, if running a Senior Max and are on mojos (I can’t see what tyres you’re on) it’s very important to not over cook the rear tyres. Any scrub on them will just fry them. Trail braking and letting the kart roll is so important. You can see the slide on the inside of the tyres when they start to blister up. A little bit of throttle is all you need out the corners to keep the power valve open, so you punch out the corners. If the engine is popping full throttle just ease off the throttle and it should still go through cleanly

      You’ve picked a hard class to master. I would find an old bin set of mojos and do laps laps laps until you get to gist of smooth driving. This class is all about momentum. But you’re on the way champ! Ask Lando to send you down under for a race one day!

    Good job Steve great drive one thing I notice is they were braking a bit earlier into the last corner which means they were getting a better run into the straight but you probably been over it by the team but good job bring on the next round

    Curls will help a lot with strength and having a lot of arm strength makes it way easier to control the wheel

    Feel for you pal. I had a bad race night this time last week at Hull Karting in there open race night. Qualified 5th behind 4 kids and infront of one. Best of the Adults. Finished P15/18

    If it makes you feel better, my very first race in the bt82/tkm league, was at Red Lodge, on the parade Lap a guy didn't start, so drove as fast as he could, and as we were forming up for the rolling start, launched off a kart behind me, landed on my kart (missing my arm by millimetres) and destroyed my engine (cracked the head down the middle), axel, real bumper, snapped my chain, put a permanent bend in my chassis, and afterwards told me it was my fault for being in the way when he tried to regain his possition, despite the rules saying if you don't get off the grid and aren't in place before second to last corner you must start from the back... was quite an intro to the karting world.
    Another mate of mine was in the A final of the tkm festival at Kimbolton and qualified 2nd for the race, and on the parade Lap, his front left wheel came off because he forgot to tighten it up. Very embarrassing

    Maybe it helps to take a step back if you have a bad weekend.
    Like try to remember why you are there, to have fun and learn.
    Oc stuff got bad real quick but hey at least you got to a nice challange at hand.
    Racing, try not to rage about it, you got this time now and it will never be the same again.

    I can't believe the steering column bent like that before the track rod bent, which is what's suppose to happen as they're far cheaper

    There's never an excuse for coming in early. As long as the car or kart or whatever is still drivable, keep driving. You never know when your competition will wreck or DNF, or rage quit for their own reasons. And then you finished, and they didn't.
