For as cursed and uncomfortable that last level was, it was incredibly well designed platforming.
maybe should have gotten first -- seemed like more work went into it, perhaps more outstanding music, more platforming (not simple mini-games) ... but it was creepy, and perhaps "being enjoyable" is ultimately more important for a game, hence it got second.
@@AetheriusLamiayes, but you see, "being enojoyable" is a completely subjective index and therefore it's not well suited to be the core of any type of serious decision metric.
Try to put yourself in the place of the creator, where the product of you toil was rejected by a mere matter of personal preference because your taste didn't align with the "collective" one, that would be quite frustrating.
And yes, one could say that the creator "know what they were doing, and chose to produce a level like these despite knowing that many people would find it weird", however that is just an assumption.
If the creator was actually ignorant about the possible reception that their level could have, by being bashed and penalized for their taste they would then learn an anti-lesson about limiting one's creativity in order to appeal to the public which is, quite frankly, sad.
I don't really get why every thinks it's so uncomfortable, it's just funny randomness. I don't see how this is any worse than something like Courage the Cowardly Dog.
It makes me think of when I was a kid and would spend an entire week hand-drawing a maze for a friend, but the start and end were directly connected. You could actually beat it by drawing a 1-inch line. But there was a hugely complex maze that was beatable all around it.
To me this idea was fascinating, and it compares to the idea of finishing a genius romhack like this with a deliberately horrible "non-ending" where it falls on its face. It's just so hilariously deflating and subversive!
But that's just me. I like weird isht.
Cursed as it may be, the mechanics in the last one were brilliant, and the music selection and execution were perfect!
The first one was fun and hilarious. I love the fun ideas it brought! These definitely deserved to be #1 and #2!

Man this rom is SO creative and fresh ! It's such an interesting idea, and its so different from what we're used to with Mario world roms.

I think we'll see some indie games inspired by the mechanics of this hack in a year or two. It's a really creative blend of lateral thinking puzzle solving and platforming. The only trick would be to find a way to do it as an original IP, but surely there are people creative enough to find a way to do that. It's fantastic.
These mechanics are so damn clever, the level moving one could be its own game
In the part after Mario is "unhanded", the pixely enemies with brooms are Rollercoaster Tycoon Handymen.
It's a very "interesting" crossover for the sake of pun.

The idea of little mini challenges on the world map makes me think of Just Shapes and Beats. I don't know Carl's opinions on bullethells or rhythm games, and the music is probably not copyright safe for streams anyway, but it does fulfill that desire for "platforming", or at least creating a continuation of the main gameplay, on the world map, including a boss on the overworld even
Both the world map and the moving background ones were really good and innovative!

I thought there was no way the first one would be even close to matched, and it was. That second level may be silly but the way it plays reminds me of Braid. Super clever and I am genuinely amazed that people are building these for zero money.
Using "Collision Chaos (past version)" is VERY clever considering the context of the hamburger hell level.

Someone once told me before, as you've said, that proving something looks better than disproving something. Now that one of the recent Physics Nobel Prizes (I think it may still be the latest one) was for disproving a long-standing assumption in Quantum, I hope that publishers start seeing the benefits of disproving things.

when i played it, i checked with savestates, theres just a death wall at some point xD

The music for the lava world at 15:10 is a remix of Hot Drinks, a song created for an old Wendy's training video. I STRONGLY recommend checking it out, it absolutely slaps.
There's a strong resistance to publishing reverification of other studies too. That's supposed to be an important part of double checking work to guard against only publishing statistically significant results(which can lead to things that don't work looking like they do because 5% of the time it does by luck but if only those 5% are published then it gives a false impression of success).
I really like the addition of being able to see the chat. Would love to see this added in next videos!

Personally I really enjoy seeing chat since it can give the same vibes as lurking in a stream (i.e. more inclusive than just watching a YT video).
I think it might be worth a shot for a video or two and see how people like it, but obviously you're in charge and I'll watch either way
@@CarlSagan42 could you maybe alter the layout to have you and chat too the side, offscreen from the game. like you are here but altered to fit a widescreen game beside you? maybe thats not feasible due to MM being widescreen
@@CarlSagan42 There is actually a separate browser plugin called ChatReplay. I don't know how it's setup, but a speedrunner going by the moniker ZFG uses it to add twitch chat to his VODs that are uploaded to TH-cam. You need to have said browser plugin to make use of the functionality, and I imagine only a small fraction would use it, but it would retain the fact that chat is still not present for people who prefer it that way, and people who want it could use the plugin and get what they want too!
EDIT: thinking about it, I'm not sure if it would work with a cut and edited video, but figured it was at least worth a mention
Love the science bonus content. There is a lot to discuss about that particular subject. The bonus science bits were one of the draws for me. Silly fun and random facts at the end. Reminds me of some of the cartoons I watched in the 90s.

The, Roller Coaster Tycoon custodian triggered some nostalgia in me. I played that game for far to long without knowing I could assign tasks and areas to them. It was always so fun to discover your park is disgusting and all 20 custodians are mowing the back 40.

Its like weirdly in my field of expertise as well - ive speedran many games but the only ones ive released have been IL speedruns of mario maker 2 story mode and space invaders 99 on n64
