I just love all your way of teaching! It's close and answers my questions . Ive had trouble with slip stitches until your tutorial. Thank you so much !
I just found out about slip stitch and mosaic knitting, literally a few minutes ago, and this video was super helpful. Thank you for the explanations and demo.
So glad I came across you, your teaching method is very clear and just in time for me as I found a shawl I want to knit that involves slip stitches. I am trying to progress my knitting skills this year from the basics and will check out your other videos.
OMG! I found my great teacher!!! I love the fact that this lovely lady understands what it is like to be a beginner!! The best knitting youtube channel EVER!! Thank you very much. Love from London UK
Thank you for your kind words. I am so glad that my teaching style works for you. I do my best to try and remember what presented challenges for me when I was learning to knit. The hard thing is to make sure you are not relying on certain assumptions that come from experience.
watching this again and refreshed my memory and I had a look at that beautiful mitten love the stair step variation ...what a clever person you are loved it ..will have another look thanks ...t.
Good Morning, I’m writing from Madrid, Spain. I’m very happy to discover your channel. TH-cam has suggested me a few days ago to see you. At the beginning I’m afraid because my English is not as good as I would like but you speak very clearly and slowly and it’s perfect for me. I understand what is the mosaic and I’m introducing this stitch in my veste. Thank you very much for your instructive channel. Have a good day
I am so glad you can follow the videos. I know I can talk pretty fast in non-tutorial videos so I hope those aren't too bad for you. But I'll keep speed in mind for future tutorials.
My word! I never heard of this technique before!! much better than to carry different color yarns!! You have a new Fan and will definitely buy some of your patterns!! Kind regards from South Africa! 🥰🧶
Thanks for explaining this especially the charts! Sometimes those charts can be confusing when some designers assume you “know” these things. Your Mosaic Lace book is well written so Thank You!
Thank you for your kind words. I am glad you like my book. I tried really hard to put all of the info you need in it without it being a boring textbook. Once you get used to the Walker style of chart they are fine - but looking at one without any guidance can be crazy making.
Thanks so much you explained it very well 😇 and for some reason there is not much on TH-cam that explains mosaic knitting and their charts. Yours and Suzanne Bryan (I think) are like the only one and listening to you both explain thing with different tips and info helps a lot. I love fair isle but my tension is horrible no matter what I try and I think mosaic knitting my help me practice with colors and maybe someday I can test my fair isle again but I am excited to try mosaic knitting. Great tutorial!! 😊
I bought your book and love it. This video is great - thank you for explaining so clearly what to do, and both how and why it works. I love your videos and patterns, Barbara.
I am so glad you like the book and that you still found this video useful. I tried my best to explain it in my book, but sometimes seeing it makes things click.
WatchBarbaraKnit My brain only starts short circuiting when I switch been the two too frequently, or if I'm really crazy and have projects going in both at once; definitely brain killing!
Learned alot from the tutorial. Many times I saw the cover of your book "Mosaics and Lace" and thought, "I'll never be able to do that." Because if this tutorial, I am going to try.
This is the tutorial for the mosaic part. The book takes this super simple colorwork technique and combines it with lace techniques. If you are comfortable knitting lace then it will be no problem! But if you haven't tried your hand at lace yet it might be a bit challenging. The book does have a wide range of complexity when it comes to the projects - from the simple mitts that I showed in this video up to full blown lace shawls and a bit of everything in between.
Hi I’m not Valarie but I’m sure Thankful for her request. I’m a new knitter and trying to use my stash ☺️ OMG so thankful for this tutorial. Interesting slip stitch but grateful for the teaching and theory . I appreciate you.
Great video, have been trying to figure this out for dishcloths and this is best video I have watched for a beginner like me. Am trying different patterns on dishcloths to learn on small scale. Thank you, will save the video for reference!
Oh wow, I'm new to your channel and so excited to learn this beautiful mosaic stitch....I want to knit your mittens right now! Thank you so much for sharing your talent. I look forward to making many of your patterns and definitely learning more. Julie
Thanks for a wonderful tutorial. I now truly feel that I can do this style of knitting. Hope you are staying in out of the cold. I'll be staying inside out of these cold winds.
beautiful. I am buying your pattern. I thought there was a gnat on my screen which happens at times and was chasing it around trying to smash it,,,until I realized it was your little pointer! love your shows and your cute personality!
There is a fine line between being concise and confusing and knitting tries to walk it all of the time. You want to convey the information in as compact a manner as possible but there is always the risk of assuming too much. I hope you have fun with color!
Hi Barbara please show how you do stretchy bind off of for Crecents shawl.Where did you get your tiny locked stitches marker I bought so many times from Amazon none came as small as your it is so clumsy for lace weight yarn. Thanks so much for your clear and fun to watch your tutorial.👏😄

I tried it once the eye of an owl but it end up the owl had a bulging eyes . But with you technique that will not happen. What is the name of your book, in Amazon? Thanks for your great tutorial

I am glad you enjoyed the video. The mitten is in my first book, Mosaic & Lace Knits. I am working on getting the patterns from this book converted into single PDFs because the rights to do so have reverted to me. Of course if you like more than a couple of projects in the book it will be more cost effective to just get the book LOL.
Thanks for the cool tutorial but now I have another question. How would you do this type of knitting in the round? I have some really pretty yarn I'm planning to make socks with and I think this would look fantastic. Please help! Thanks Barbara 😍😍😍😍
Honestly, it is easier in the round. What I demonstrated for the right side you would simply do that twice! You don't have to remember to slip with the yarn in front on the WS because there is no WS.
Hi Barbara, thank you for another fabulous video tutorial. I'm don't do too much colorwork such as mosaic, but I must say your designs are beautiful. I'm not sure if it is appropriate to ask, how long does it take to come up with a design and what is the motivation that drives you to use the color schemes per each project? Thanks again. Respectfully, Donna
Thank you so much for your kind words. It is totally fine to ask questions like that, but I won't always have a good answer LOL. Different designs take different amounts of time. Some come together quickly (a month or two) and some take longer. I've had designs that took over six months from concept to knitting. As far as color schemes - I tend to look at a LOT of yarn and try and decide what colors speak to me. And most of the time I have the yarn before I come up with the design as opposed to the other way around. I pick out two colors that I want to use together and then spend quality time swatching until I find something they like.
Hi Barbara. I have never tried mosaic knitting, but recently I have been wanting to try colorwork. I have done fair aisle once or twice but have never been completely happy with it. If not, where can I get it? Also, I would like to buy your book, is it available by ordering from you and how would I do that? Hope this is not too confusing. Anyway, thanks again for a wonderful video. You are the best! Terry

You bring it up the same way each time, the important thing is that you be consistent. I’m afraid I don’t think of it as over/under so I’m not sure how to answer your question. I bring the new color up behind the one I’m stopping so that the old yarn is trapped between the new yarn and the fabric.

Thank you for explaining this. I've been doing a lot of crocheting lately and was thinking of slip stitch like crochet; this makes so much more sense!
Yeah, nothing like the crochet slip st LOL. I have seen people use the mosaic principle in crochet tho. But crochet makes my brain short circuit.

Hi Barbara, in the future could you possibly do a tutorial on some of the stitches you use in your book and Ravelry page? Your last two videos were great.
Could you clarify what you mean by some of the stitches? Do you mean specific stitches like s1-k2tog-psso or do you mean stitch patterns?

Great video! But how to you do the foundation rows when there are two colors? Thanks, susie
You just cast on with one color and work two rows. Then you join in the second color.
Very nice video Thank you!
Many thanks!

WatchBarbaraKnit: Barbara, you are most welcome. Thank you for the information, you inspire me.
Do you have to worry about the tension of your float if you slip 3 stitches, for example?
Yes, but not as much as with stranded knitting. Just making sure that each stitch has the same amount of space as the other stitches usually works.
