one thing to note about this band....if you perceive that all the musicians are soloing at the same time ! Listening to each other
No Band, outside of Jazz Bands listened to each other more than the GD, the timing, space, letting go of personal ego and playing to their collective strength which was their strength
So, the Who and Grateful Dead were staying in the same hotel (in NYC, I think). Jerry was in his room on an upper floor when he heard a knock on his window (in those days, hotel windows opened 😅). He opened the window and Keith Moon climbed into his room. He had gone out on the ledge and walked over to Jerry's room next door. After hanging out and smoking a couple of joints, he asked if Jerry wanted to do some coke he had back in his room. Jerry wasn't about to go out on the ledge, so they tunneled through the closet back to Keith's room.
The funniest part of this story is that Kieth Moon climbed across the ledge to Garcia’s room because he couldn’t figure out how to open the locked door to his room….from the INSIDE 😂 Then when they went to his door in the hallway to retrieve Moon’s drugs, he couldn’t get in from the outside because he had dead bolted it from the inside. Not wanting to go back out onto the ledge, Moon broke through the wall between their rooms and climbed through there, and back through the hole in the wall, still not being able to figure out how to unlock his door when he was back inside again. Must’ve been some very good coke.
“Estimated Prophet” was first performed by the Grateful Dead on February 26, 1977, at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino, California. The Dead also premiered “Terrapin Station” at that show. They played it 390 times in the years that followed, with the longest time between performances being 15 shows-mostly it stayed at the every third or fourth show rank. Its final performance was on June 28, 1995, at The Palace in Auburn Hills, Michigan. It appeared on Terrapin Station, released July 27, 1977.
Blair Jackson quotes Weir, discussing the song, in his biography of the band: “According to Weir, he and Barlow wrote the song from the perspective of a crazy, messianic zealot, a type which one invariably encounters in Deadhead crowds now and again. As Weir explains: ‘The basis of it is this guy I see at nearly every backstage door. There’s always some guy who’s taken a lot of dope and he’s really bug-eyed, and he’s having some kind of vision. He’s got a rave he’s got to deliver.’ “
Barlow calls on plenty of biblical imagery for the lyrics, with the sea parting before the singer, and fire wheels burning in the air, etc. Pretty much your average run-of-the-mill vision for an experienced Deadhead. The interesting thing, for me, is the notion that this character is a prophet. And therein lies a more subtle biblical reference, not at all overt, but hovering in the back of our minds, perhaps, if we have any biblical training. Namely, the notion, expressed by Jesus in three of the four gospels, and therefore likely to be something he really did say, that a prophet has no honor in his own country. The very role of a prophet is to be reviled in his or her own time-look at Cassandra, cursed by the god Apollo to have her prophecies disbelieved. Kind of makes you want to look around and see who is being dishonored and reviled and disbelieved, and maybe give them a second chance.

Jerry once said about the drummers (in response to Hugh Hefner) that “they are like the serpent chasing its own tail and if you stand between them they make figure 8s on their side in your head.” I don’t think it can be explained any better.
These guys were NEVER scared! I’ve seen them so far out in the weeds you wondered if they could ever find their way back, but they always did! Jerry lived out “on the ledge” and he wove magic nets for himself and the band, just in case. You still have SO MUCH great stuff to look forward to! And don’t forget The Jerry Garcia Band!! “Let it Rock” and JGB Vol 10 are great places to start!
It was during these long improvised parts at their concerts... that I realized that The Dead....just like Zappa... had learned the magic trick of Hypnosis through MUSIC.
I was a drummer in a grateful dead tribute band...I sang this song as well.
Originally, this song was in 7/8 time, but Billy said it didn't really swing the way he wanted it to, so he played it with two 7/4 beats instead.
I love The Dead. Saw them twice and they're beautiful memories. It's funny how Jerry's solos sometimes fades into the background and the other parts of the song become dominate. They're magicians.

If you like the percussion here, you should check any one of the hundreds of drum solos over the years. They did them at every show. Over the years, they picked up percussion instruments from all over the world and were not the least bit afraid to use them. Drums could last from about 5 minutes to half an hour. They don't always translate to recording well but live they were genuinely exciting.
Jerry's mix of wah and clean phrasing is stellar. One of his best nights among many. Best soloist ever. Always looking for new phrases no matter how long it takes.

Jerry's "Estimated" solos are some of my favorites.
I have seen pictures of Pete jamming with the Grateful Dead at this concert.
This is the song that hooked me back when.
One reason the solo is so long is they are known for medleys. They’ll play multiple songs without stopping. Just jamming through the transition from one song to the next ☺️
I met Jerry in 1971 and I found him sitting on the edge of the stage with his legs hanging over the edge playing an unplugged guitar . I. Was in the room which was basically empty so I saw him right away. walked over and said hey man and stuck out my hand out we shook hands. Jerry was smiling at me so I just asked him if I could sit behind the amps and he said go to the tight of the stage and Ramrod would push the equipment cases they had put there to keep people from getting up to the stage.So he pushed them aside just enough for me to get through and I helped him get them back together and got on the stage, it wasn’t very high.and I went through the first opening between them and the first person I met is Bear and he’s dropping liquid acid on the back of people’s hands and then they licked it off. I put my hand out he put four big drops on
the back of my hand and I licked it off.. then I said thanks and could I check out his sound system and watch what he did. So.he explained what the different gear was and what it did. SO I asked him if he would give me the name of his local dealer and he hooked me up to up with the guy. . He gave me his phone number. I called him up and said Bare had given me his number and I asked him what would be a good day to call.
He said I could come over tomorrow. I went over and met him and his wife.said that I should call him RG.. I went over to his place and bought 300 blue tabs and 100 tabs of DMT. He said that we should go.together the next time the band was in town. We did that and would totally tripped out
It all came to an end when they arrested Bear. We got turned on to people from the west coast and the guy would fly in with five thousand doses..I did that for about five years. We got turned to a retired narcotic detective. he had high grade coke and acid plus some of the best weed I ever. I have not had any acid for years . ⚡️❤️⚡️

The program was called Rockpalast, German for Rock Palace, from the Grugehalle in Essen, West Germany, at the time, and broadcast all over Europe. You are correct, that The WHO were also on the bill, they opened, and Pete Townshend even came out and played with The Dead on a couple of songs, but he really looked lost and out of place, "Not Fade Away" was his best effort. "Estimated Prophet" was usually paired with "Eyes Of The World", but at this show they were going into "He's Gone" instead. The Dead do mix it up at times. Thanks Dave and Lee, l33, it was fun. Next try ""Sugaree" from 9/6/80 Lewiston, Maine, audio only, no video.

I saw this band nine months after this show...on Dec 28 and Dec 31/Jan 1 1981/82
90's concert scene were so memorable. A rebirth of bands LIVE like GD, Allman Bros and new comers Fish. Shroom on.
The drummers had their own special part of about every show. They named themselves "The Rhythm Devils". I believe on this show they even had a travelling juggler act on the show that performed juggling while the Rhythm Devils played

Darn, now I need to figure out a way to get my turntable working so I can play those Dead albums. In the early to mid 70's The Dead were the groove to do anything by. Most parents didn't understand the nanm and only fixated on something like "It must be devil worship with that "NAME".
So we just played in in the background when they were about and never told them the name. A few even were rumored to actually like the music.

When I was 17 I went to my first Dead concert. When I told my dad I got the expected "don't do drugs, blah blah blah" speech and was on my way. They played Terrapin Station and I had to buy the album. Every time I played it I noticed that my dad would make his way closer to my room, he liked it ! After that I couldn't help but picture him going through my room looking for paraphernalia while listening to it.
I love 7/4! There's just something about it that feels right.

Yhi whole show is on TH-cam. Really funny Drumz section. Pete Townshend joins them for a few songs at the end, but is completely lost. He has a little bit to offer on the cover song, but realizes he's looking foolish on the Dead tunes, so he thanks Jerry, and leaves the stage.
Actually that rockpallast gig has some great footage. You should see them with Pete Townshend on stage with them, and the Sugaree and Althea are great from that gig. Obviously just the right amount of drugs that night.
As great as the video and audio recordings are , to experience it live was/is exponentially better. 😎

The thing is, the Dead were very eary believers in recording their concerts, to give away to fans. Often a group plays a concert or tour, and there are very few, if any, recordings of the show. The Dead had people who recorded shows going back to the 60s. Some worked with the band. And later tapers (audience recording in designated areas) became a mainstay, as the band believed any who wanted the music ... should have it. There are recordings of most of the more than 2000 shows done by the dead, before their breakup in 95. After rejoining, post Jerry, fan taping was still a thing, although the band saw that many liked the professional recordings, as well, and Dick's Picks took off.

Many great versions of this song. The one with Branford (edited), on Sax, 3 29 90 is one of, if not the best version.

Its not necessarily a "solo" so much as a jam, with Bobby and Phil and the drummers engaging in the conversation, like Jazz. Phil is too low in the mix here for my taste but he *always* contributes to what Jerry is playing in a meaningful way. Percussion was killer too

One of my favorites... Most of the time, the live version of a Dead song is the best version. I know that many don't agree with me, but one exception to that rule is the song Terrapin Station.
For me the studio version of that song is the best version.
But THIS song (which is from the same studio album) always sounded better live.
Working man's Dead and American Beauty are two gem studio albums. Still had Pigpen contributing too.
There is video footage of Pete Townsend of The Who jamming with the Dead live on stage. He brought some raw energy to the song, but not much musical input, no solo, nothing he played really stood out. Ill post a link if I come across it again...

I agree...Garcia has a warmer voice...I never liked the TONE of Bob Weir's voice.
See the video of their first trip to England. Part of it has a harmony vocals rehearsal with Jerry, Phil and Bob. Phil noticeably wines more than once at Bob. Jerry says at one point "Just breath." Bob was trying to put every note into music theory identication. That's when Jerry said just breath. Bob only occasionally sings from his diaphragm. He's more up in his nose and head often. Sometimes it works, many times not. Phil's reactions during rehearsals are hilarious. Check it out.

@@L33Reacts no. Brent Midland and everything associated with him is good in the Greatful Dead. I had to deal with the aftermath after Jerry died. Summer of 1995 is my graduation year. That’s when the GD were thrusted upon me. I got to learn quickly what I like & don’t like from the dead.
And that’s when I discovered Bob Weir makes my ears hurt. Same reason why 311 never became larger: guitar player is mediocre at best and is the weakest link.
