R.I.P. Kirk Douglas. He lived a long great life of 103 years. Who knew at the time of this airing that he'd live well into the 21st century.
He lived a perverted existence of innuendo and impropriety at the expense of his female victims (Jean Spaulding and Natalie Woods) but he suffered a debilitating stroke survived a horrific copter crash to reflect on the grotesquely daemonic things he did to others.

I rarely have seen a T.V. show where the participants enjoy so much each other. It's clearly genuine and infectious fun and laughter. Times have certainly changed, haven't they...

I was just thinking how difficult it would be to try to do the mystery guest segment nowadays....people have so many choices about what television programs they watch and what music they listen to, that there are very few celebrities who would be well known to all on the panel as well as the audience. Back in the “Big 3 Network” days, everyone in the country had mostly the same cultural references. But I do think there would be an audience for a witty, intelligent, vanilla show like this still. This show was mostly done before I was born, but I got hooked on it when they had it late nights on GSN.
There was a lot going on behind the scenes.
Depends on what you watch. This honestly reminds me a bit of the D&D twitch show Critical Role in some ways.
A well spoken game leader trying to not give the players too much information but still enough to go on, shenanigans by the players now and then and all of them greatly enjoying each other's company.
Even has occasional guests.
We need to bring shows back like this with this style of panelists
Not happening. An era gone by and much less individual occupations exist.
Finding candidates for the panel would be a challenge. Even the WML shows taped in the 60's don't compare to these older versions. There existed refined class, mutual respect, intellectual ability, and morality which sadly diminished as my hippie generation came in to being.

Panelists of this magnitude and style do not exist anymore....especially now in our day and time.

I just started watching this (in order) and I think this episode is the first one where somebody as a celebrity was still alive this year (2020). I know once I get to the sixties it will be different. I still haven't gotten to a person who is still alive yet.

Such a wonderful, vivacious and classy presence in this era of television. I'm thoroughly enjoying watching the movie icons and legends of our past in their "hey day". Wonderful
As for the mystery guest, no one in the audience knew who it would be in advance. Gil Fates describes in his book the extraordinary lengths they went to in order to conceal the identity of the mystery guest (although not always successfully). The delighted, surprised applause from the audience that you usually hear when the mystery guest signs in-- that's completely genuine!
That makes sense, since John Daly (in the finale) explained the backup plan they had for mystery guests (John being the Mystery Guest) was based on if the guest should arrive, and how one time, the guest made it at the very last minute.
BTF the loudest ovation I ever heard for a mystery guest was Robert Mitchum. You would have thought one of The Beatles showed up.

@@joeambrose3260 Bennett was a man of some renown in his field internationally. He had lived some decades already at this point and was married to a close relative of Ginger Rogers. It was true that many of the guests lived and/or worked in NYC regularly and others visited and stayed for the duration of their appearances on Broadway or at Basin Street East or like venues and would run into him at parties or at their performances or they may even have wanted to write a book about their experiences, so sought a show biz savvy publisher. He had done wonders for publishing. My friend who'd worked for him just died recently and had said he was thoughtful of others as well as quite smart. He and his wife entertained because they were social people and dinner parties were a form of repaying both personal and professional kindnesses and at times seeking out new possibilities for working together with someone with whom one could chat less formally at such an occasion. And they would not run and hide from you if they were a guest in your home. So, it just happened that when he had his Sunday evening (and at times Saturday evening) dinner parties some of the folks were perhaps already signed on to do a MG stint on WML because they were in town working or promoting something or doing a big charity benefit that also landed them at his dinner table. It was not so much coincidence as inevitability. His wife lied to him when she was MG. Ginger Rogers regularly lied to him when she was staying with her cousin while in town and was also to be MG. Others played dumb. He quite honorably removed himself from participating the couple of times someone actually told him who was on, which was not the MG himself.

Kirk was my parents favorite customer at their store in Palm Springs Ca. He always paid his liquor bills on the first of the month by personal check. As a result my dad charged him a reduced price on Dom Perignon champagne which he bought by the case. Every bit a kind gentleman he was.
I'm not sure that Natalie Wood thought he was a 'kind' gentleman.
I am sure there were customers out there that were not as responsible as Kirk paying the bill

Horns versus antlers: we learn something every day! Antlers are shed each year but horns are for life, so the reindeer raiser was right to give a 'no' to Dorothy's question 'Do they have horns?' as he explained afterwards. This show certainly packed a lot into 25 minutes - I feel that today it would be padded and stretched out to 45 and lose its fun.
I would say about learning something new every day it's probably the best thing about getting older

Peter Lind Hayes did really well for someone who had never played the game--even solved the mystery guest. Kirk Douglas looked just like his son Michael 30 years later.
Young Kirk had more swagger than Young Michael.
Douglas was still in the early stages of his extraordinary career. He'd starred in a half-dozen or so movies, and was a recognized star, but much of his best work lay in the future. His autobiography, "Ragman's Son," is well worth reading. He grew up in conditions of poverty that are almost unbelievable these days.

Ah, another person who's read the Gil Fates book. I got a used copy last year and loved it, so well written and packed with information, if a little on the overly diplomatic side. Well worth reading for anyone who loves the show. It's obvious from various comments you're a huge fan of this show-- you know it much better than I do. I used to watch it in reruns, but didn't have this large collection of episodes until a couple of years ago, which really spurred my interest.
I just looked at amazon.com and found a paperback of the book for $118. Think I'll try the library
I'm looking at Amazon now and they have used library editions for sale at nearly 1500$ with a soft cover going for 140$ and up. Hope my local library hasn't sold their copy.

I had just watched 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and I loved Kirk Douglass, so I looked him up and I was astounded at his age! I mentioned it to my father at how amazing that is, and then he passes away, no joke, the next day! 😢 R.I.P Kirk Douglass

I would choose tv shows /movies from this era or before then from what we have now. The respect of others, kind words, no cussing, I’ve seen no racial divides, no nudity, no sexuality to get ratings. it’s just a wonderful time of laughing and a love for each other and respect.

When I was 12, I was traveling with my parents by car through Mexico when we went all the way to Oaxaca and were headed towards El Paso on the way back when we stopped for the one night in Durango. We stopped at a motel on the edge of town that only had one vacancy... the rest of the rooms were taken up by the production team and cast of a western movie starring no less than John Wayne and Kirk Douglas that was being filmed outside of town (The War Wagon)... I was starstruck as we shared the motel's restaurant with the cast, Mr Wayne at the next table and Mr Douglas across the aisle! I remember being more interested in Mr Douglas and kept watching him. He was at a table just with one young actor (seemed like he was giving him some good advice) while Mr Wayne liked to be at a crowded table. I felt like saying "may I have your autograph?" was dumb and just decided to keep the memory inside, where it stays now, 57 years later. Of course we made a point of going to see it when came out the next year (1967)!

Kirk Douglas lived a very long time. As a child I remember seeing him in Jules Verne's "20000 Leagues Under the Sea", in which he played harpooner Ned Land, with James Mason playing captain Nemo. He also played Spartacus, and many other famous roles.

Interestingly TH-cam saw fit to recommend this to me on 12/20/2023 exactly 70 years after first airing.
I'm going by memory, having read producer Gil Fates's book on WML well over a year ago. . . I do remember that the really early episodes would often end with a request to be contacted by people with an interesting occupation. I think by the time the show had been on the air for a couple of years, this wasn't really necessary anymore-- they got more than enough unsolicited submissions/suggestions to keep them going.
Where can I get that book for less than a week's salary?

"Lonely are the Brave" is my favorite Kirk Douglas film with perhaps the saddest final scene in motion picture history.
I couldn't finish watching it when I saw what was happening. Broke my heart.
I went to go hunt this episode down after finishing "Young Man with a Horn" - he was just wonderful in that even if they did give it a 'hollywood ending.' I know nothing of the film that you've mentioned....that may be next.
I watched this film a short time ago. Wonderful. The final scenes were so traumatic-it broke my heart, too.

I hate the way the final guest is hustled off so quickly after the appearance of the mystery guest. The final contestant is always a letdown, mainly because there is so little time left for a proper game.
I grew up watching this show and loved it and to see it again after all these years is so special but this episode was aired just a few a few months after I was born.

Fortunately, his appearance here in December 1953 is still in the WML collection.
In October 1960, he appeared as himself as a self-employed contestant "Manufacturers Electric Blankets for Horses." Gil Fates wanted to use that clip in "What's My Line? at 25." Kirk hated the episode and refused to authorize its use again. Game 2: Senators Thruston B. Morton of Kentucky and Henry M. Jackson of Washington (as Mystery Guest Duo) "Chairmen of Republican and Democratic National Committees" Game 3: mystery guest Mickey Rooney. This blindingly all-star episode with guest panelist Steve Allen has somehow gotten lost.

I'd never seen Kirk Douglas in any movie til a few years ago I discovered 1947's Out of the Past also starring Robt. Mitchum and Jane Greer. I was shocked at what a great actor Kirk was. I've watched the film many times now in particular to see scenes w. Kirk. Of course, I also love watching Robt. Mitchum in the scene where he catches Jane Greer in Rhonda Fleming's apt.

I saw real reindeer a very long time ago. I think that it was in the 1970s. They're very interesting animals. They live in a bitterly cold region. I used to think that they didn't really exist. Of course, they don't fly.

Dorothy couldn't get the right description out about Raindeer's 'antlers '. First she mentioned horns and then what made me laugh, was calling them BRANCHES. She had the right answer but stumbled a bit. There were a lot of skips in the film, but only one with Kirk Douglas. I just finished an excellent film with him and Kim Novak; STRANGERS WHEN WE MEET. (Married folks having an affair) A well done film.

I wonder if a panelist ever guessed it right on his/her freebie at the beginning. I know they dropped the free guess in later seasons.
Yes I don't remember how many but there were at least two and one was by Arlene. But the free guesses sometimes got too wild like one of Bennett's in this episode so that and the low amount of correct guesses killed that portion.

Didn't keep me from watching it, though! :) I enjoyed it despite the dropouts. One more thing: I looked up Gil Fates' book on Amazon-they want almost ninety bucks for a used copy!! Ouch!! Do you or anyone else here now where I might be able to find a copy for a lot cheaper? I live in Houston, if that helps. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)
Four years after your comment, the pricing for the Fates book has not improved. I check Amazon, thriftbooks, and abebooks from time to time and haven't found anything less than $90. Good luck with your search.

I urge everyone read the book about his upbringing called " The Rag man's son". To say he had it rough is an understatement. Poverty and struggle every day was common place. Yet he made it to the top. God bless America 🇺🇸. RIP Spartacus 🙏.
Also, Dorothy, a "horn" is one piece and tapers to a sharp point, whereas antlers are branched and each one terminates in many points, which are usually fairly blunt. Reindeer, other kinds of deer, elk and moose have antlers, not horns. Also, horns are hollow and can be made into musical instruments (such as the shofar made from a ram's horn), or fashioned into a container or vessel, such as a drinking horn or a powder horn.
Although it could never be as good as the original.....I do wonder what a show similar to this could be. 🤔😊

I guess it goes without saying that Kirk Douglas is the oldest living former Mystery Guest, but I wonder if he's also the oldest living guest of anyone that's been on the program. I suppose there's no way to find that out, but it would be interesting to know if there's somebody over 100 now that appeared on the show at one time.
