I got a very similar surgery on my lower jaw because of an overbite! The swelling went down after a couple weeks, and it was about three months before I was good as new. I'm definitely glad I had it done though! My bite and profile are a lot better! It's ok to be scared. Don't try to fight it. Recovery will be rough, but you will come out the other side glad you did it. Best of luck

Hey Shelby. I'm a nursing assistant in North Carolina at Duke University Hospital. I understand your pre-op fears. It's scary indeed. But something I always tell my patients, right before they go to surgery, is "Positive mindset; positive outcomes." It's a tradition of mine for anyone going under the knife. I'm passing my tradition on to you, and wishing you the best for your procedure. Stay strong. Know you will come out okay... and keep doing like you are doing; telling yourself that this is for the best and in 6 months, you will be glad it's done and out of your mind. Okay? Positive Mindset; positive outcomes. You got this bud. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Shelby, I had this surgery on 2017. Before the surgery I could barely chew, it hurt when I laughed, it hurt when I ate, I dislocated my jaw twice and had to go to the emergency room to put it back and everything (which is extremely painful), and I hated my face. My jaw was too long and one side was sort of bigger than the other, which made my face look so uneven and it got even worse as I grew up; I barely had an upper lip and my smile was not that nice either. This surgery was literally the best thing that ever happened to me. It changed my life in more ways than I can count. I won’t sugar coat it and say that it is easy, because it is not, and I wasn’t able to eat normally for A LONG time, waaaay more than a month. And even when the doctor allows you to chew again, you have to gain confidence, because you haven’t chewed in a long time so you’re kind scared of screwing everything up (at least I was). I lost 8 kg in a week, but I think that wouldn’t have happened if I had been correctly advised. When my parents realized I was losing too much weight, they got really worried and called a nutritionist, and then I started this diet focused on gaining weight, which helped a lot. I know you’re nervous, but everything will be fine and like 6 months from now you’ll be extremely satisfied. Today when I look at my “before” pictures I honestly just see how unhappy I was with my whole situation. It was really hard, but I’d do it all over again if I had to

I had surgery last year, not the same surgery but it was a surgery that kept me not walking for a long time or even moving. I was so scared the night before, worst panic attack ever- but as soon as the day came I realized everything that was meant to happen would happen regardless of how my brain handled things- which that thought helped calm me. The surgery went amazing and I regret nothing- and you'll be saying the same thing too!!

@@veganbeth Thank you! And no problem- it was supposed to be simple gallbladder surgery but they didn't know I had lupus at the time so it caused my pancreas, liver, and kidney inflammation problems during surgery, so I ended up staying in the hospital for 2 weeks after, while recovering. My legs technically worked walking wise but I was so weak and in pain, they had me in a wheelchair for few weeks. No fun! But it was a total fluke as they didn't know I had lupus, so most people wouldn't have this issue haha. (I said the surgery went amazing because my gallbladder did get removed perfectly fine, it was my own body that had issues hah)

I'm getting this surgery next year, but the opposite, so I have an overbite, my jaw is too far back and needs to come forward with some additions. I'm in braces in preparation for it. It's a long journey and it's actually GREAT to see someone about to go through a version of what's coming for me. Please keep documenting the process, it helps. It feels like it's going to take forever for my surgery to get here. For me, like for you, this is the only option. Good luck!

not the same surgery, but i had a double mastectomy last year at 22 years old. i didn't know anyone personally my age who had been thru breast cancer, and the typical recovery time for a mastectomy is 4-6 weeks. it was terrifying to think about being in pain and not being myself for 6 weeks. all that to say, the surgery went great, i recovered in 2 weeks, and was able to walk at graduation.

Good for you in helping others by giving to Goodwill (or any other similar self-help place of the same ilk). I'm in my 60's now, but in college a fellow photographer named Echo had a surgery of this type and when she came back around months later, I didn't recognize her at all - she finally told me who she was. For her the correction was so pronounced. Always a nice lady, she pulled through it all very well and it blessed her life I think. I'll wish the best for your surgery outcome and that the discomfort will not be overwhelming as you recover. Laughed at your stuff under the bed - :)

I had a similar surgery about 2 years ago. I was definitely nervous but I also felt relief that things were finally going to get better. Like you said, it's an investment in your future. My surgeon always told me that the first week is the hardest, and once you get past that things will be better. You'll also be amazed at how resilient your own body and mind are. 2 years later I hardly remember any of the recovery. You'll be okay and should be proud for even having the courage to take this step!

Being nervous regarding having surgery is normal. Make sure you feel safe and confident in your surgeon which will help significantly. I would also suggest asking your questions pre-surgery having a plan post-surgery.
With that said, I had spine surgery a week ago and the pain/challenges on this side are far less then pre-surgery. My mobility and ability to walk has improved significantly. I actually changed surgeon after getting multiple red flags that were upsetting from the surgeon and his nurse. My surgeon and his team did a great job... Also the hospital protocol and procedures where on point, and the staff was amazing; I felt totally safe. I was also glad to complete my surgery before an increase in Covid cases so I am to have it over an done with🙌🏾

I'm really glad you opened up about your fear and let us see inside the real you.
Art makes the person appreciating it FEEL. This video made me feel compassion for you. It's a much higher level than normal youtube videos.
We watch these vlogs because we want to see a real person, not because someone is the funniest or most positive person.
Otherwise, my wife is going to give birth this week, and she feels just like you. Cries all the time and fears for her life.
I can't really relate to you two, maybe just the way I am, I don't fear surgeries, or physical stuff like that.
During childhood, whenever I fell and bled and started crying, my father would always say:
"What's the point of you crying? Your guts aren't going to come out through there. You're fine." Then I would cry for a few more seconds and then move on.
I wish you all the best for your surgery!

Girl, I actually freaked out so much about my nose surgery (to breathe, not cosmetic) that I cancelled it. Then 10 months later I booked it again and it sucked but I knew there was an end to the recovery process and that goal is what I kept in mind. Then like magic after a few weeks I was able to breathe like I had never done before and it was all worth it. So you're not alone in the freak out and you won't be alone in the "yay it's finally over and my life is so much better now." You got this, Shelby! 💕

I had this surgery done in 2017, I had both my upper and lower jaws moved. It took me a solid 6 months until I felt like myself again. What I wish I knew before the surgery was that the recovery is going to be frustrating. When I went to take a sip of water for the first time after surgery it got all over the place, because your mouth is in a new position, you have to train yourself how to eat and drink again, which takes time. My biggest advice is to have a lot of protein shakes on hand, I drank a lot of muscle milk. Also, mashed potatoes were really helpful, I think I had them everyday during my recovery lol. I am happy with my results, I can chew better and speak clearly now. Each week, you will become better and better. Best of luck!!💜

You are MORE than allowed to be scared and breakdown because surgery is no joke no matter what it is. You’re doing way better than I ever would because my anxiety doesn’t ever let me stop thinking about something I’m afraid of and makes me a basket case from the moment I find out about it to the time that it’s over lol I never got my wisdom teeth out for that reason honestly. I was up panicking the entire not before, got in the chair for the appointment, annnnnd ran out lol I’ve never had surgery, especially what you’re about to do, so I can’t speak to it but I’m sure you’re going to get through this like a champ. Always remember the goal ❤️ you will be so much happier once it’s behind you

I’ve had 3 surgeries in my life, in 2018 I had TMJ surgery as well and got a titanium screw also. It’s definitely not fun and the healing process does take some time. The first week is rough with the swelling, eating, and sleeping aspect. But after that it gets a lot better! Everything will be fine I was also very worried and almost back out but am happy I did it. Also you will probably have a sore throat which is quite unpleasant. Best of luck 🙂

I had a VERY similar jaw surgery when I was in high school because I still had a 1.5 tooth overbite after 3 years of braces. I was terrified before the surgery too, but I am happy to report that it sounds WAY worse than it is! I have two small bits of advice. Figure out what foods you will drink before the surgery, like fully test the recipes. Also, avoid sour at all costs; something I failed to think about before I absentmindedly took a sip of lemonade in the hospital because it came with my dinner. That was the only time I cried from pain. You got this!

Give yourself some grace. Emotional stress tears with all you got going on between filming ahead, moving, back and forth to Palm Springs, the surgery, probably sleep deprivation too. You got a lot on your plate and we appreciate your hard work and consistency!🤎🤎🤎

Please, I need you to make videos of the whole surgery and post-op process. As detailed as possible!!!!! I have the same problem as you and I'm considering getting surgery.

Aww hang in there Shelby. You're so smart and responsible and I think you've done a terrific job of preparing for this in all aspects. You are a strong and beautiful woman and like you said...in six months it'll all just be a blip and a memory!

I had major surgery last year; I was so excited to get it over with because all I did was visualize how much better life would be after surgery. But I was still nervous as the days drew closer. When the day of the surgery came, I suddenly felt very calm and was almost on autopilot. But once I woke up and realized I made it through, it was the MOST AMAZING feeling! Sometimes I wish I could bottle that feeling so I can enjoy it every once in a while. So remember to enjoy that post-surgery RELIEF; savor it!! And yes, my life is so much better having taken care of that situation. Hang in there! You'll be fine!!! Hugs XOXO

I had the lower jaw only and opposite procedure for an overbite when I was 15 about 10 years ago. It is scary but not that bad honestly. My main recommendation is post surgery don’t be shy to ask for more pain meds or take them if you aren’t comfortable. Just be careful with the opioids if they give them to you, duh.. I have a big pain tolerance so I didn’t think it was too bad but just had the lower done too. About a third of my lower face never regained feeling fully so always feels like Novocain is wearing off but don’t notice it unless I think of it. Mine was also in a rural hospital so a much nicer place in LA will 100% do yours more accurate with the nerve reconnection. Long term after make sure you wear a night guard if you even so slightly start to grind your teeth. Avoids uneven grinding down the road, got the problem myself hope TMJ doesn’t get me.. Been watching your videos about it for a while hesitant to comment but you got this! It’s so nice having my teeth fit together now!

I had a back surgery last year and they have to wake you up in the middle of it, just to make sure they don’t paralyze you. I was FREAKED but all the doctors and nurses make you so so comfortable!! You got this!

Jaw surgery was the hardest thing I've ever done. But I don't regret it. It's going to be a physically challenging next few months but you will make it out to the other side glad you did this sooner rather than later.

It is absolutely a good idea to prepare for the worst. After seeing this vlog today, it looks like your surgery is VERY similar to mine back in 2012. Granted it looks like technology for recovery has gotten better!! But I was in high school when I had mine and BOY OH BOY did I wish they would have prepared me more. I had a SUPER bad recovery. I couldn’t talk, or even breathe, out of my mouth. Was wired shut for 5 weeks and swollen for at least a year post op. For two weeks I could only eat with a syringe attached to a catheter tube I had to snake to the back of my mouth. I was NOT ready for how bad it was going to be. But even saying all that I am so glad today that I got it. I had a terrible underbite too and now I experience zero pain or discomfort! Aside from a slightly numb lower chin but whatevs. Lol. It WILL be worth it I promise, but definitely be prepared for the next several months to be the literal worst. Just my two cents!

Major surgery is definitely nerve wracking and it’s ok to be scared about it. It will be better in the long run but in the moment it can definitely be overwhelming. I’ve had to think of the possibility of getting brain surgery and it was definitely hard for me to think about.

      why'd she get jaw surgery?

    • @katejordan8065
      @katejordan8065 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I pretty sure it was because she had issues before when she was younger because she had and an underbite and a problem with her her bite with her back teeth and braces and a bite block fixed it temporarily but her teeth moved and she had been putting the surgery off( because I think she said the recovery is earthier six or twelve months) and now she decided she was going to do it ( I think she said she wanted to get it over with) and now after the surgery I think she said her underbite and bite in the back is pretty much fixed, but she will have to get Invilign for about a year for everything to be perfect.

One of my friends had this surgery in high school...she had braces for YEARS before and they didn't fix the issue and she had to have surgery. I feel like the whole healing process was not as bad or as long as she thought it would be and she looked great afterwards. You got this!!!

Make tentative plans for a getaway in Dec. or Jan. Having a special travel treat to look forward to after burning the candle at both ends the last few months + surgery could be a great mental escape!
