I have watched this video so many times and I just realized that the tenor player at 17:30 performed a near perfect rendition of Hank Mobley’s solo from Dig This on Soul Station; absolutely awesome.

I have enjoyed this wonderful collection of young jazz musicians tremendously. I especially was impressed with how advanced some of the sax players are as soloists. All is not lost fellow musicians from the golden age of music, and I mean my peers of course., I am 82 and it is so good to see that the music I love will not be dying any time soon. As a former USAF musician that music is deep inside me.
WOW was the Tuscon Jazz Band great. Amazin' solos all around with some creative techniques such as the mute and plunger combo. Overall one of the most synergistic Jazz Bands I have ever listened to.
Tremendous performances! I can't say enough how much in awe I am of these performers. Every single band absolutely brought it. Very difficult to judge a winner. I was impressed at now much the kids were enjoying themselves and feeding off and encouraging each other. Some great team lessons here. Thanks for posting this. I am sure I will be listening to this again and again over the years.
I did not realize until now that the Tucson Jazz Institute did not play with music. That must have taken quite a long time and it's a smart move by their director; it causes them to listen to each other much more whilst playing.
Matthew Molina Tucson never plays with music, but if you play the same few songs for months on end working to perfect them you end up memorizing them whether you want to or not, and yes; I'm speaking from experience. Hahaha
As a lifelong guitar buff, Four Freshmen fan, and lover of all things big band, I can only say Justin Bieber, eat your heart out!! Wow, how super to see some neat young folks who appreciate jazz and big band music.
This is just an amazing opportunity to see and hear the Dukes work being performed by all these talented young musicians . I congratulate MidasDoas for the this find.
I was listening to a series of the You Tube versions of Benny Carter's Symphony In Riffs and Essentially Ellimngton landed in the queue. Only took several years. A fine achievment for Lincoln Center and it doesn't hurt that two of the opening bands are from Wisconsin.
It is wonderful to hear these young musicians making the Duke - and myself so happy. "Blood Count" just sublime. I saw the Duke many times. That I could live these musicians carrying on his legacy is heart warming. When are you coming to France? Perpignan if possible. Thank you so much.
Nah, I have to retract there. It's the Rio Sacramento band that gives the goosebumps and the Benny Carter's piece really gives a good whack on the a**e. Bravissimo.
Does anyone else notice that there are only 14 jazz bands in this video? Badger High School, my high school is the 15th band that played this year. Is there a specific reason that we didn't make it into this amazing video? Gregory Bunge led the Badger High School Jazz Ensemble to play Jump For Joy, Blood Count, and Symphony in Riffs. When I grew up in Wisconsin there was not such band it is hard to believe they are so young. From Brookfield Central High. I understand Brookfield has a weekly jazz night in a hotel with a big band. I don't know of any high school band in the Bronx or NYC of this quality. NYC now is dying when it comes to jazz as far as I know. The CUNY schools have something, but what I don't know.

Great stuff. There's nothing more pointless, though, than a director standing in front of a quality jazz band "conducting." Just a bunch of old white dudes awkwardly dancing.
I'm glad you enjoyed this one. I tried to get all the footage for this past year but couldn't really find it... I'll probably try again at some point but no, as of yet I haven't made one. Sorry :/

Would have been better if he came up with his own thing
@@ajrdrahgohnite9363 it’s still kinda cool
And the alto before him played Phil Woods solo on Blues in Pig Alley

That is so funny!
they was like, "bro, we tough" lol
These are some talented young people. God bless them.
The fucking bone solo in symphony in riffs by Tucson oh my god. 4:17:25

My school's competing in this! So excited for them. Thats some hefty competition
These young people are outstanding-congrats to them, their families for their support and their teachers and mentors for their teachings.
Thanks for making this available to those of us who strive. If I could start over, I would practice more. These players are so great.
Great. The sax growl from Tim Lesley on Billy Strayhorn's Blood Count is superb.
that one "it don't mean a thing" quote during that solo was awesome
The one at 2:37:20 ?
If so, yeah that was awesome! :D

As the Duke said "it don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing" and it's been swinging right all the way thru, man! Great stuff.
OUTSTANDING. EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES.THANKS FOR PUBLISHING THIS.
IT MOVED ME EMOTIONALLY.

the trombone from arizona plays with Wynton marsalis now on some gigs the second one from the left
The one in the Tucson Jazz Institute (first trombone)? Yeah, I have seen him in a couple of gigs.
Sam chess?
I love it soo much this was the best
It is wonderful to hear these young musicians making the Duke - and myself so happy. "Blood Count" just sublime. I saw the Duke many times. That I could live these musicians carrying on his legacy is heart warming. When are you coming to France? Perpignan if possible. Thank you so much.

The only problem with this music it is copy cat music and not creative music creative in our time of 2015. This is the music business. It sucks.
Dillard Center for the Arts was swingin man! Love seeing diverse cats gettin loose out there
zoey abadia killed it with jazz house kids
that high school Alto sax player had to have been listen to Phil Woods, my goodness yesssssiirrrr

Second line
It is a shame they well soon end their academic carrier's and will not longer to play this music together.
Are the bands allowed to play any music from bands other than the Ellington band? I realize the festival is named for Duke,...but I have to ask.
You can't, it's not like the Thelonious Monk competition where you can play from different composers.
They occasionally release songs from other composers for example the 2014 festival featured songs from Gerald Wilson and others have been promoted such as Dizzy and Mary Lou Williams
What time are they at!?
