This performance is the most heartbreaking of all those I've seen. The assassinations were still fresh in our minds and hearts when Moms Madley sang this and clearly she was feeling it deeply. It didn't just bring tears to my eyes, it made them roll down my cheeks.
Absolutely, this interpretation is special. Even though Moms singing quality isn't anything to write home about, but it's the emotional quality that hits home. It's genuine and it's sincere. It comes from the heart. I give her my upmost respect. 1968 was a terrible time. And hearing this performance, I too had tears rolling down my face.
In 2022 I'm 36 years old but I remember our past and this song brought me to tears I've seen so many videos on those assassinated and I feel like I was there even though it's before my time. Moms Mabley truly a legend in her own right.
I got something in my eyes now...😿 I lived through those days (except for Lincoln of course) but her face expresses all the sorrow we felt. God bless her soul. 😔🌹
Ive loved this song from the first time my 4th grade teacher told usc1 day to close our eyes, put our heads down on our desks and told us to just listen to the words. I must've been 9 or 10. Thank you mrs. Desmond! This version for some reason makes me think of all the ppl I've lost.
Moms was a comedian. I saw her sing this live on TV when I was 17. Loving then and now is hard to explain but her performance from head to toe is raw and pure. I remember a common feeling was we have to fight! But what next … as the Vietnam war deepened.
That took real chutzpah for her as a performer. She was known exclusively for pretty broad comedy so to step in front of an audience with a completely serious performance out of her comfort zone had to be a challenge.
As a black, female and lesbian, she brilliantly celebrates the lives of those who strived to improve the world. Change comes slowly and those who came after Moms Mabley stand to benefit from the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to legalizing gay marriage. Moms was ahead of her time. In 2024 with democracy on the line, we need Moms and perhaps Kamala Harris might carry on the fight that Moms believed in. Freedom isn't free. Abraham, Martin, John and Bobby paid the ultimate price to make America a better place to live in.
I'll never forget the first time I saw this performance. I can't think of a more powerful representation of the lament shared among the black community, civil rights supporters, and just about anyone that has a soul in the wake of the assassinations. If this doesn't move you, you need to check your pulse.
i have never heard her sing this version!! wonderfully done with so much emotion. 11.21.2021 thanks for posting for us to hear. betty gordon, ames, iowa

This was in the Top 40. She held the record as the oldest person to have a top 40 hit for several years.. 😅❤❤
I have heard many versions of this beautiful ballad but Mom's is my favorite. I can't watch this without crying.
I just found out about this version. Ive always loved Jackie " Moms" Mabley- she seemed like an auntie or one of my mom's friends from church.😪😪😪
This lady sure knew how to reach and touch people, no matter if it was through comedy or something serious like this.
What would this country and world have been like if those 4 men had lived long lives.
Three men, not four. Abraham Lincoln, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, and Martin Luther King. Each was assassinated. The last two when I was a teen.
While not in the title, the song is also about losing Bobby Kennedy as mentioned in a verse.@@conniead5206
@@conniead5206...no 4...the 4th one is Bobby Kennedy...JFK brother was shot in 1968
❤ what a world it would’ve been

You're preaching to the choir, sister!
It makes me cry every time. The thing is, besides being heart-rendering, it is so well done. She has a great sense of timing to get effect
I meant heart-rending instead. Whatever, to wrap yourself in the emotion
Dam. Grandma just made me cry. As she should.
me too!
She was awesome!! This song brings me to tears!❤
I never get tired of hearing Moms Mabley sing this. I cry every time. She puts so much feeling into it...
I choked up at little bobby
Still hurts to this day.
This performance made me sob. She so poignantly expressed the country’s emotion. I love this performance and love Moms Mabley for it.
She sang with the Heart of America. True, Genuine and Sad. Hats Off Mom.
Stuck in reverence. What a story. Slainte ❤️
Awwwwww........I remember Moms Mabley when I was a little kid. I knew that she was a comedienne, but I never knew that she was a singer.

Si yo también siempre pensé lo mismo, yes I always had the same reaction, even though I was born in 1987
Lived thru John's, Martin & Bobby's assasinations. We were heartbroken!😢
I got something in my eyes now...😿 I lived through those days (except for Lincoln of course) but her face expresses all the sorrow we felt. God bless her soul. 😔🌹
Without artiface. A pure performance that allows the viewer their own emotion. Perfection.
Just heartbreaking just like all those tragedies .......So beautiful...
It takes a comedian to touch the soul!!!
She put her heart soul and everything into that song. It was a n honor to listen to that.
Certainly the most beautiful version of this song.

A true original who dies too soon and came from before the 1900's.
Merv Griffin! Such a kind man and Moms gives a tear-inducing performance.
a great song
She was so funny and this song is incredibly moving.
Oh. I am going to cry.
That took real chutzpah for her as a performer. She was known exclusively for pretty broad comedy so to step in front of an audience with a completely serious performance out of her comfort zone had to be a challenge.
So moving. You can't listen to this and not be in tears by the end.
With all due to respect to Dion, thus is just incredible! Bravo, Moms, Bravo!
I’ve never seen this version. So genuine.

A voice so terrible it can actually sound good
You could have kept that stupid comment..
I appreciate the effort, but if you heard this on the radio (vs Dion), you would turn this off in a second. It is not good.
