Now that we've seen Leap, the real question is has Josephine seen the entire Barbie Ballet Cinematic Universe because like my childhood was watching the Nutcracker and then getting to discover the various barbie ballets that just made ballet so beautiful to me as a young person who would never have seen a ballet otherwise
Exactly! Because they use motion capture the dancing looks so much more real than when animators just replicate dance moves. I've always found the dancing in Ballerina (this movie, it's Leap in the US) is in uncanny valley, it's like they almost have bendy bones, while the Barbie movies have the control and strength of real dancing.
@@definitelynotalizard honestly the 12 dancing princesses video showing the motion capture of real ballet dancers was amazing Like it never felt like something no human would be able to do, it always felt grounded in ballet reality which is so appreciated in animated ballet content
As a non dancer, my issue with Leap, is it seems like it takes place in like. A week or two. Which I know is impossible to master that level of dancing after starting from "I like dancing but I've never trained" as she is in the beginning of the film
Same I'm not a dancer, and I loved this movie. Then I tried to do some of the moves and stuff, (Don't worry i didn't ACTUALLY go en pointe) And I looked really dumb
Whats worse is she overshadows the girl who literally worjed years to obtain the muscle strength, stretchiness and balance. Blondie was legit doing weights while redhead just suddenly becomes the best because...belief. no other reason. Hard work out the window
@@LilyUnicorn I interpret the point of the blonde as buying your way into things because you can. Plus her mom was pushing her into everything. She was good because her mom made her do it. At the very end she decides to do it because she wants to.
I agree. And I've danced and know a lot of dancers, and very few have anything positive to say about a movie that throws the years-long dedication and hard work it takes out the window for the trope of "just BELIEVE and you can do it in a week."
Its called Ballerina in England! I loved the idea of this movie but it is just so ridiculous, wonderfully silly 🩰 and the fact she never had pointe shoes on in this, just her regular shoes makes it even funnier 😂
I remember furiously searching for "ballerina movie" when it was coming out in the US because they kept pushing the release date back and I didn't want to miss it. I didn't realize they changed the title, too. XD
@JasonShana Family I understand, but sorry I am still well placed to know that in France the film is called Ballerina 😂 I have the DVD at home! It happens regularly that the names of films change according to the country, like Frozen in English which becomes "La reine des neiges" in France 😉
I remember back then when I first watched the movie in the cinema, I was mesmerized because they looked so cool, doing ballet (obviously better) like me and also being about the same age. But now that I'm seeing that particular scene again together with Josephine's accurate expressions, I realize how extra and unrealistic it was. Still a good movie tho. Very inspirational (not just because I think that we should invent dance battles in ballet).
The most ridiculous part I can't get past is the initial training scene, when the main character learns how to land quietly and how to turn without getting dizzy... All her instructor-friend needed to tell her was, "land gradually from toe to heel," and "there's this technique called spotting." I understand they wanted to make this all dramatic, which was absolutely fun to watch, but having been a dancer myself, the way that was approached was WAY over-complicated. The writers should've chosen to do that dramatic scene with different moves...maybe I could've learned something new.
@@NightWink129I think the target audience is really young, like barely starting dance classes if that old. My daughter LOVED this movie, and she watched it often from around 18 months until 3 years old. At that age, it's about the impression of ballet with some feelings mixed in to tell the story. It's also why they went so over the top with the "bad guy" mom. It's not supposed to be realistic at all. It was perfect for the super young kids, not so much for anyone with more than a couple years of training.
My favorite and close to accurate part is where she is trying to touch the bell without making ripples in the water. It is very hard. During ballet we would spend a large portion of each class just jumping up and down trying not to sound like a herd of elephants jumping but to be as silent as possible. I haven't been in dance for a few years but even now I can't jump and make a sound with my feet, no matter how hard I try. Also I'm sneaky because between ballet and marching band I learned how to walk silently, gracefully, and quickly.
I always hated the mean girl ballerina angle too. Even in competitive situations the other dancers I met were always so sweet and nice. I maybe had 1 negative experience with another dancer in my 20+ years of competing.
honestly, while i agree and hate the trope, i cant deny its a bit accurate, though very over-exaggerated. ive met a lot of petty dancers. the best example i can give is the time my friend and i competed in YAGP. now, we were the first competitors, on the first day of the 3 day competition and it was our first competition ever. i am also NOT a morning person, so this was already a stressful experience. at yagp, you get something called open stage. a 15-20 minute period, where all the dancers from your 'block' (which is a lotttt of dancers), all just get lumped together on the small stage, and attempt to space their dances. the issue? well, imagine 20+ dancers, all marking ( or doing full out if you were one of _those girls_ ) different dances, spinning in opposite directions, and just general havoc. nowhere was safe, everyone hits everyone. if you want to space properly, you gotta fight for it. and two 14 year old girls at their _first ever competition,_ were not about to fight for space and get in the way. you then get told to clear the stage when the time is up and then the competition starts. however, sometimes dances are allowed 5-10 minutes, alone on stage, for spacing (mostly for group dances). my teacher asked for us to have time to space, so my friend and i, being the first competitors, and a duo, were allowed 5 minutes. so we went back out on the stage. the dancers in the wings were waving their hands around, folding their arms, rolling their eyes, shaking their heads and glaring at us. pissed off, wondering _why_ we were still on the stage when they had been told to clear. the girls all adopted this insanely smug expression when a stage helper came up onto the stage. we went to get off, thinking our time was up, but she waved her hand at us and told us "oh no sweeties! youre fine, dont worry youve got time" and then left to continue talking to my teacher. so, we continued. after we competed, we went off into the wings and these girls are those most TWO FACED girls ever. we get off and their all _ohhhh you did so beautifullll, great job :)_ and im just thinking to myself like.......ooookay. thanks... i guess. but i am not the kind of person to say anything and neither was my friend, though she didnt see them as well as i did as she face facing the opposite direction at the time. i decided to just wish them good luck and left. as we did, i heard one girl say "ugh, what a b-tch." thanks for that linda

This is called ballerina for me! This is my favourite film as a dancer since 3 years old :)
0:20 The show The Dance Academy has that sort of stereotypical mean girl as well, but they give her a storyline and more personality as the show goes on. It's a great show; I'd love to see you react to it! There's a part with a very malicious dance teacher/pro the main character admired, which has a very interesting twist.
FINALLYYYYYYY I'M SO HAPPY U REACTIED TO THIS
Omg I watching leap right now. I watch it like a hundred times. Its what made be wanted to be a ballerina but my dream will never come through.
I’m 20 and honestly I’m thinking of just learning at home, I don’t think it’s ever too late to pursue a passion
@@autumn3884 I'm 13
Yep I wanted to be one since I was young I’m in ballet now it’s so fun I’m also 13
@@jessfidler2356 you're so lucky I bet your a beautiful ballerina. I wanted to be a ballerina since I was young too but where I live does nothing with ballet.

YES I WAS ONE OF THE PEOPLE THAT ASKED YES THIS DAY HAS FINALLY COME OMG
Josephine, your mean girl moves (and hair-flip-and-smolder skills) are fearsome and a wonder to behold.
(If I didn’t hate puns, I’d say they were on point.)
This was so fun to watch!
you should react to the Alice in Wonderland ballet. I really like it and it would be interesting to see what you think of it :)

I watched this movie 100 times but I love it and love your videos 😊🌈❤️🧡💛💚💙💜💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓🖤🤍🤎
As a ballerina I think it’s funny how she had no experience in pointe but was like a professional in less than a week
And also did pointe in just regular flats💀
It was so much longer than a week. Not long enough but much longer than a week or two.
@@RTCPhotoWork no cos that class thing was a week long
Omg I love your videos and I'm subscribed
That leap over the stairs move is grand jeté . A very difficult leap to do and definitely not exaggerated in irl than this movie. But the leap is a real thing

2:12 FR AHA! i love these stereotypes, Josephine clearly knows them too well lol, and they're so funny. this sardoodledom is always prevalent in these kinds of shows/movies.
