Great video once again Fraser. Great views from your mountain top. Amazing to see the antenna even gave some contacts on 40m where it is really too short to perform. Thanks for sharing. Best 73 de ON4MGY Nic
Hi Nic, Thanks! I took the view that I often work stations who are mobile and using a whip (on 40m), so my few metres of wire should at least equal that. Cheers, Fraser MM0EFI
Nice one Fraser, I will catch a QSO with you one day. Hope you didn't get into too much trouble about your trousers, and that your knee has healed. Also lovely display on how clear our hill fed water is. Nothing better :) 73
Cheers Gordie. A lot of folk comment on two things they see in my videos. 1. That I can leave my bike and it is still there on my return. 2. That I can drink water straight from the burns. I really enjoyed that day. The clag in the morning wasn't forecast but it was amazing to watch it burn off in about 5 minutes. I ended up getting slightly sun burned. 73, Fraser MM0EFI
Cracking video and what a nice location. You must have tried so hard no to stack it when riding the bike through that stream. Nice run of contacts on that antenna and looking forward to the next video of how it's made. Hope your not grounded for too long. 73 Chris M0RSF
Great video Fraser! This seems a good solution in combination with an ATU. I'm eagerly waiting for your second video showing more details. I also experimented with a resonant vertical for small summits, but I still have to do the video editing. I prefer so much going out for SOTA than sitting in front of the computer 😉 I really hope your knee is fine again or will be healed soon. Take care and 73, Stephan
Hi Stephan, I filmed this back in May, so I am a little late in releasing it! I have been trying to design a short multi band resonant vertical, however I think if would be difficult to implement with traps and coils. 73, Fraser MM0EFI
@@theradiorover Ahh, that's why one still sees patches of snow! And yes, using fixed traps or coils would be tedious. My "solution" is trivial in this sense: I use a cheap commercial antenna with a changeable base loading coil and add some other pieces. I'm also not a fan of commercial or pre-built antennas, but in this case I had to make an exception 😏
@@PortableRadio yes, I actually edited most of it and then forgot to upload it due to being busy with other things. The commercial base loaded coil antennas seen to work well, but like you I find them heavy, expensive and cumbersome! I'd love to hear how you get on with your resonant vertical. All the Best, Fraser
@@theradiorover My next video will show that, with all the pros and cons of a vertical antenna, compared to a partly horizontal one, e.g. an EFHW. I tested it extensively and compared it against my EFHW when there was enough space. Otherwise, better to have an antenna than none. Have fun and 73, Stephan
@@PortableRadio I recall you writing that I would lose NVIS with a short vertical. I managed NVIS close contacts on 40m on this trip. Probably down to radiation from the two radials. I must model it!
Amazing. I got S57S today from a summit in southern Washington State in the US. Was using a vertical whip on an FT-891 on 20m. Heavy setup but I'm sold on verticals for the DX. 73's! Jeff KK7DAK
Nice one again Fraser! I saw you on Ham alert but couldn't hear you good enough on 40m. I didn't hang around for the other bands. That antenna works fine. I use a 8,5m wire and a radial. The KX3 tuned it just fine. Didn't try it with the G90 yet.
Thanks mate. I was surprised and delighted how well the compromise antenna worked. Many folk asked about the design, so I'm going to upload a video showing how I made it. 73, Fraser MM0EFI
@@theradiorover I get a lot from your videos Fraser. We spent years and several dogs tramping the Cumbrian tops, but for well over a decade 'er indoors has dragged her heels with regard to high fells, and now with the dog's hips she has a cast iron get out of jail free card. The beautiful scenery makes memories more vivid. You never know how different folks appreciate what you do. Similarly, I enjoy the SOTA reflector. The only Monroe we ever did was Ben More on Mull. I could never have persuaded her to sit still while I indulged in a few summit contacts anyway. So yes- Cheers to you Mate.
Tidy antenna. Helps with the KX having the ATU to assist. I was looking the other day for an compact antenna for HF that does not need ATU(already have a linked dipole but on a small summit could be awkward.)
I thought about trying to make a short one with traps and coils that would be resonant and not need an ATU. It is not really viable for a short length and still be multi band. Mine fits in my carbon 6 nicely and the kx2 tuner is a godsend!
Fraser, I'm curious the purpose of the choke in your setup here.. Is it to precent RFI from your transmission coming back up the coax into the radio? Chokes are still a bit of a mystery to me but so far, I'm getting by OK without them!! Thank you again for the love and effort you but into your videos. For me - you're been one of the best resources out there as I refine my setup and learn the hobby! Cheers, KI6PQO.
Good Question. A common mode choke is needed for an unbalanced antenna to keep RF energy coming back into the radio. In theory a dipole is balanced and doesn't need one. However, uneven ground, imperfect symmetry and nearby structures all add imbalance to the dipole, so a choke is always a good idea. The antenna in question here is un-balanced and a choke is advisable, although you may get away with it at QRP power levels. Take a look at this and see if it helps: th-cam.com/video/A2Tq7AWIRwE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=JnQTTDVxQOF7zFQp
I use VK Port-a-log. It is available for android and can be used for SOTA,POTA,WWFF and other portable Ops. It is simple to use and produces an adif and a csv file. I also use it to spot myself and to view other activations. It's brilliant. Only time I can't use it is when it's raining!
Yes, the problem with random wires is when you make them really short, there is not many lengths that you can use that aren't close to a length you want to avoid! 16.5' is roughly a quarter wave on 20m. Getting it to work on 40m was a surprise and delight! Obviously the 49:1 helped a great deal. Not the most efficient, however folk use 40m with a coil and whip, so no worse I suppose. The objective was to make an antenna that was vertical and would work on my carbon pole, so I am pretty happy with the outcome. Cheers, Fraser PS when I do the build video, it will be metric and not bananas. 😀
I will do a video of the build. Look out for it! The mic is a baofeng type and us easily converted. Check out here: th-cam.com/video/QSccadQoadM/w-d-xo.html
