- The moment we have all been waiting for! Will the one off coachbuilt 1940 Mercedes come ti life after over 50 years of hibernation in a midwest barn? Randy and crew set out to give it a go, and the results went well beyond expectation!

The moment it started i was blown away.. when it cleared that exhaust and they manage to let it idle for a bit then driving by its own power with clogged clutch, man.. this car is a piece of automotive history survived so long yeah hat off to those 2 guys involved in starting and to everyone involved !
A car gal has the same understanding. Especially when she works on her own vehicles.
There's nothing like the first start-up of an engine you've just rebuilt or one that has sat for many years. It's always a thrill. My 1960 Saab 93F was stored for over 20 years when I got it and the engine was fogged when it was stored. Plus the Marvel Mystery oil I put down the cylinders made so much smoke, you could hardly see the car. It smoked a lot the first time I drove it but it cleared up as much as 2 stroke will ever do.
Would be good to have heard the first start instead of someone yahooing about it. I was screaming shut up I want to hear it.
Sounds like half of a WW2 German fighter plane motor. Oh wait….

The felt on the distributor shaft is for oiling and deserves a drop or two.
Yes, I've seen this before. It's there to help prevent the heel (which comes into contact with the Camshaft) of the Contact Breaker Points, slows down wear, and helps to maintain the Points Gap. Good point! Later, I would fit electronic ignition inside the (restored) original Distributor. The engine really benefits from this action, becomes more lively, by improving the the "firing' cycle. You never need to set the Points gap ever again.
Every moving part or link on the engine deserves some oil. I do it to my Citroens all the time and it's a very relaxing thing to do, giving everything a drink. And it has a lot of places to oil.
One of my passions are in-Line 6 cylinder engines, and this one just got better with each start. Amazing to watch!

Hi from Australia. Refer to the thumbnail - my first car was a 170SD. I ROLLED IT the day after I got it! Engine was transferred into a black body - used to create tracks through the bush. Diesel was hard to get - farmers obliged.

Looks great. Small point, when you fill water, clean distributor and clean carb, all when your sparkplugs are removed, all small dirt entered the combustion chamber, potentially damaging the internals. Also new oil types have a high 'detergent' agent, cleaning out all micro metal dirt within the engine and loosen it up to be 'ground' into all precious bearings..... I do enjoy the excitement but too many oldies are damaged (prematurely for its remaining life) in this process... But; it is a beautiful car!!!
That is a very good point. I've rebuilt the engines on my two Citroen Tractions and after the break in on mineral oil have run them on fully synthetic. I've added toiler paper oil filters which keeps the oil pretty clean as the engines didn't originally have a filter.

This old girl deserves a full restoration!! Engine runs great.
She may get that at some point, but the first step in my eyes is to make it run and go as is and source any missing parts. We really look forward to showing the car a couple times as is too…there is such magic and beauty in its state of decay.

I use to have a 1952 Daimler Barker Special Sports, the styling is so similar, 2.5 straight 6 with a preselection box and auto chassis
lube, a reluctant sale due to immigration, that never happened.

Outstanding, very nice going boys, that toy is running practically perfect for the time that has been sitting, I wish to be there with you guys, enjoy, make the best out of it, if I am seen right the instrument gauges are working, the difference in between man and the boys is the size of their toys, from the endless summer paradise Puerto Rico, Jesús Torres.

This is a high-value car, and congratulations on getting it running so smoothly! I do hope that this car gets completely stripped, lots of welding work, lots of parts to source to keep original as possible. Maybe Mercedes could help. Would love to see the complete restoration, and then the Shows much later on!! Whatever is spent will be worthwhile. Greetings from Australia.
Perhaps a restoration is in the future, but for now, it’s all preservation . I don’t feel that every car needs to be perfect in order to be enjoyed and appreciated . That being said, it would be spectacular at concours level! Thanks for watching and please follow along to see the progress!
Mercedes helped me back in the 1970s when I had a 38 170V cabriolet. When I was in the US Navy on a Med cruise, I went to the museum in Stuttgart and they gave me builder's drawings, copies of blueprints for the wooden body frame and on microfilm rolls, the shop, owners and parts manuals which I was able to copy and then return to them months later. They were a big help.

I asked people who are only into modern junky vehicles that are more computers than cars: If you compare your modern vehicle to a car of the Fourties and Fifties: You are speaking of progress? Listen how smooth old classics run and how solid everything was built back in the day : What is the "progress" you are talking about? Try to start any modern vehicle after sitting for over twenty years. Forget about it! The good vintage cars are ten times better than any nonsense built today. Cannot wait to see more of the Mercedes. But PLEASE do not give up on your Cadillac as well! By the way, the 41 Cadillac was one of the best and most modern cars of that period. More modern than this Mercedes beauty.

Good job on getting it running reminds me of when I got my 53 mg roadster running it was a barn find in Carolina when I got back from nam drove it for 2 years then sold it to the battalion commander for a profit .

I can't imagine how rare that car is plus being in the U.S, I wonder now how many still exist and production numbers... It deserves a full-restoration. Those headlights are huge & the Level is styling/design just wow!!!
They only made one like this, and this is it!
A full restoration may be in the future for the car, but for the moment the goal is operation and preservation!

If i can be of any help i have a friend here in the midwest (indiana) who has a 1940 as well, actually a Officer's car from the war and i'm sure he has some contacts for any specific parts you are needing or whichever. Sorry guys but as 63 year old mechanic who hasn’t worked in the trade for 20 years I was feeling very sorry for the starter motor, but you got there in the end. It was nice to hear it running
We gave that old starter some rest time between takes…only had the camera rolling when the engine was spinning and we were hoping for it to fire.
The reason that it smoked was because they put oil in the spark plug holes because the engine has sat so long.

It had a right to smoke anyway.

Swear I saw this once before, none the less, its a great start off of many times of cussing to make it run and run well. I think our thirty six ford cabriolet looked identical to this rig. One year only and was the highest priced car of its time

When I was in the US Army and transferred to Germany(59-60) I owned a 1/3 share of an old post war Mercedes (late 40's) well used taxi. GIs just bought and sold shares in an old car as they were transferred in and out of Germany. Never licensed. We had a diesel and swiped fuel from the motor. Saw a lot of Europe with it.

Great stuff, fantastic to see it running, I'm most intrigued by the front suspension, I'm seeing a lower transverse leaf and what looks like inboard coils hiding at the bottom of the radiator, look forward to seeing more of that !!!
I counted 14 leaves, but it's hard to tell.
Yeah... a leafspring !!!
I had a 38 170V with two transverse leaf springs that also functioned as the control arms. It rode nice but the springs would twist when braking which did affect stopping the car. Stepping on the brakes in reverse was not much different than not stepping on the brakes. Plus the drums were only 10 inch. Not a lot of stopping power.

I was afraid that with all that white smoke there was a blown head gasket, but no! Everything sealed up. Unbelievable. 82 year old car!!!!
It was really just the months of soaking the engine with penetrant burning off. Quite a bit went into the exhaust and such … once that all burned away it was clear sailing!
I'm not easily impressed, but, I'm impressed,...LMAO. great car!
It's sad to think of just how many of those beautiful cars that were destroyed during WWII.
The loss of human life was also pretty tragic you know…but yeah, cars, architecture, etc… the mind spins thinking about it .
As cantankerous as an old Rambler American in the beginning but in the end it seemed to run pretty good!

Noticing the Delco master cylinder, I’m reminded other videos on European cars reported many American auto parts were purchased by European makers, starters, carburetors, brakes. U-joints
Always clean the points when starting something that has sat that long.

That type of points are easy to get. I would just put a new set in. Bosch makes points for probably every European car.
This car must have a particularly interesting provenance, given its model year.
