A wonderful tribute by one great composer for another. Well played too.

I wish Orion Weiss would have more espressivo on the piano than on his face!

It's all affectation and has no bearing on the sound. I cannot stomach such a display as this.

Two talented pianists who obviously just threw this gem together.

The symbol of it being written for two pianists. The ghost Brahms invokes is Schumann's.

What original? The theme is from the Schumann violin concerto.

A fragment of the theme can be found in the Schumann violin concerto, yes. But the theme really hails from Schumann's last work: the Ghost Variations - i.e., another set of variations; therefore Tom Dengler's comment makes sense (he compares the variations of Schumann to those of Brahms on the same theme). (It is all but certain that Brahms would have considered the theme "at home" in the Ghost Variations, and not in the violin concerto or the second movement of the string quartet (where it is also found)).

Better, my a**. All these variations prove are the differences between Brahms and Schumann. Here you have Brahms showing off his (considerable) compositional skills but the inspiration to go to new places and the warmth and beauty of soul evident in Schumann's variations are entirely missing, just like they are missing from most of Brahms' music, and when they aren't, they can rarely be called "beautiful."

I like Schumann's better in terms of personality and feel, but I prefer Brahms' overall.

@@fredwanger9337 actually it appears already much earlier in his output. Check out the second movement of his string quartet 41/2 (measures 17 ff.)
