My favorite freeway in the ATL region, other than the Downtown Connector...that's some serious infrastructure, displayed in this. Had a good time driving this in 2009. Nice soundtrack, too!
Nice to see I-85 north bound from Atlanta again. I've run this route several times myself and it was nice to see upgrades done in the last 4 years. Whatever you're doing with that new cam, keep doing it! The clarity was amazing, made me feel like I was riding in the car with you.
The freeways are big, but people don't realize that there are no alternate routes to travel across the metro so one fender-bender affects a million people's drive into work. Atlanta needs parallel alternates to the basic layout of freeway. The DOT doesn't measure up to the other states'
I drive this stretch every day and have been up and down it regularly for most of my life. Except I take I-985 for several more miles. Thankfully working second shift I drive it at 1:30 P.M. southbound and 11:45 P.M. northbound, so I rarely hit any traffic. You'll have to do it again soon, it's amazing how much is changing just in the past three years since this video. Jimmy Carter bridge/interchange project completed and the 85/985 interchange is now nearly unrecognizable from what it was in this video.
i've driven that stretch countless times commuting to/fro' hartsfield - it's never been enjoyable til now lol - i will say 3a.m. on a weeknight on a 135bhp v-twin motorcyle on that stretch is nothing short of heaven ;-) - thank you for the upload
As usual Jim, you've produced a great video. By the way, I think I know the song that was getting crossfaded at the end- was pretty interesting to hear it coming in.
Pretty impressive how wide this road can be !! Nice video !! Nice TL too ! I almost had one like yours but ended up with a 2010 TSX instead !! Keep on rollin'!!!
Hey, Jim. About the 85 in Gwinnett County, can you imagine what it's like to see the traffic between Atlanta and the Mall of Georgia? Also, we know that exit 115 with GA 20 is the interchange that provides access to the Mall of Georgia.
I live right off the exit where you got off exit 115. Wow has it changed a lot a lot more busy now more people moved here it’s a really nice place to live
It will eventually be widened to six the rest of the way through Georgia, it becomes six lanes again at Exit 19 in SC to Exit 81, then again at Exit 10 in NC for a good stretch.
Despite being of the nation's busiest interstates, Georgia does not build many new roads which explains Atlanta's gridlock, and I-85 won't be widened up to the SC line in the next 20-30 years. They are just finishing adding a 3rd lane not even reaching Commerce and are patting themselves on the shoulder as if it's a big accomplishment. NC has widened I-85 to 6-8 lanes almost for the entire 220 miles through the state.
Nice ride! I am impressed with how GA does their freeways! Wish ODOT would do the same for ours here in Ohio! Nice ride and I am impressed! Always great to see your videos and your new season! Safe travels!
I visit family who reside near Winder (not too far east of this stretch of I-85), and I love this stretch of I-85, excluding the common bad traffic of course.
Great ride Jim! Interesting how so many roads in the US are named after Presidents etc (1.56). Here the "Monash" freeway is named after an army general but none named after a Prime Minister. Major roads are generally named after locations or directions eg, Eastlink, Westgate, Tullamarine.
Wow. Looking at this from 10 years ago. The northern stretch of toll lanes weren’t installed yet and the widening of the GP lanes to go with it. The Gwinnett exchange wasn’t built yet either.
Yeah, it’s pretty crazy seeing I-85 up to Mall of Georgia so forested or empty. The entire county’s built up so much since a decade ago and I’ve only noticed it now.
I love that song red star on your jersey turnpike video. I traveled that road . I did a video once 279 Pittsburgh you watched it. I grew up there. They are doing a major tunnel project on the ft.pitt tunnel this fall to the ceilings . They are removing them
Atlanta seems like it needs more miles of freeway corridors, not just more lanes. It is an interesting metro area because there seems to be a lack of other roads in which the people can use in case the freeways get clogged. Had Atlanta developed more like a checkerboard than a wagon-wheel do you think the traffic would be so bad there?
Drove to Atlanta 2 times and I 💘 it....Have family in Union City, we left that sunday afternoon and you would have thought that it was a monday morning on 285...
I’ve some cousins that live in Lilburn. They live by Exit 101. Also, I’ve some cousins in Chamblee. They live by Exit 94. I remembered being in Atlanta last August and my family went through I-85 plenty of times. I live in NYC. I really miss Atlanta.
Jon Stefanik Thanks, The Braves new ballpark is being built in Cobb County, near the I-75/I-285 interchange, Google it, they are going full steam ahead on the construction.
2:01 the new bridge here in the Jimmy Carter exit looks alot better and nicer. It switched lanes once you cross it and switch back. So like, the right side was the left side.
@@Freewayjim Note that Georgia doesn't cantilever overhead signs anymore which is idiotic, thus cluttering once attractive freeways with excessive overhead truss structures to support single signs on both sides of the country's widest freeways, not to mention that all of the aren't level and noticeably lean down to the left or right. Embarrassing!
I live in Norcross (near exit 102) and used drive to Suwanee multiple times a week (exit 111), so it's pretty interesting seeing people talk about this drive I made all the time! I also think it's a shame that none of the hwy signs say "Norcross" (except for a single sign each way about Historic Norcross), even though exits 99-102 are all major Norcross exits, and I-85 even enters Norcross city limits around exit 101.
these are always so much fun to watch, but just a question if you dont mind, you said that you used a tripod to put your camcorder on, I actually tried that myself at one time, but the dang thing kept tipping over whenever I went into a turn, how do you keep your upright while driving????? thanks
Thank you so very much for the instructional video, I know where I made my mistake when I did it all those years ago, I actually put te tripod in the back part of the car, never thought about putting it where you did, in front of the passenger seat, Thank you so very much again.....
nikola tesla Ah, to be honest, it was not as bad as it looked, typical Atlanta driver, with the video being sped up around 4x things look faster than they really were in real time, but good eye on your part just the same.
Wow! Rivals freeways in CA for size. Largest in Louisiana will be 5 lanes in each direction when the I-10 expansion in Metarie is completed....I think. Wouldn't want to drive everyday in that.
Great ride Jim and GDOT should extend the ETL and the express local lanes from exit 106 to the junction with I-985 and GA-317 due to heavy traffic at those exits
They had a fire on that highway before I-85 traffic mess behind a dude that was smoking and ignited a chair and purposely sat the bridge on fire the the road collapses. the suspect should pay for what he did to the Interstate 85 highway . people were stuck on the Interstate 85 highway and had nowhere to go. it was a traffic nightmare.
Jereminah Winfield the suspect is the dot for leaving highly flammable combustables underneath the bridge. That. Dude you're referencing is a scapegoat to cover up the government's negligence
That was a fun and interesting video! 20 Lanes? That is huge! In Idaho where I live, the widest part of a freeway is 8 lanes! You should check out my freeway I made on minecraft
My favorite freeway in the ATL region, other than the Downtown Connector...that's some serious infrastructure, displayed in this. Had a good time driving this in 2009. Nice soundtrack, too!
Thanks, I-85 from Exit 84 to Exit 115 probably the most interesting freeway in the region, outside of the connector of course.
I'm want the ninja turtles

Well done Jim, you deserve it!
Thank you!

Thanks, that camera certainly does a great job.
You put a lot of work in these videos Jim. Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much!
Appreciate all info on the screen, especially the dates. I live in this area.
Thank you for watching!
Really amazing! The view at 3:20 is stunning! Need to watch it again on my TV!
Thank you, it's a pretty neat ride in person.
Its funny but sad when FreewayJim says that i85 gets reduced to a "measly" 10 lanes. Most cities would think 10 lanes is too much!
That was indeed the point behind that comment :)
A trick : you can watch series on flixzone. I've been using them for watching all kinds of movies recently.
@Ayden Isaiah yea, I have been watching on Flixzone for months myself :D
I-45 still 10 lanes 31 miles north of downtown Houston in the Woodlands region!
that's a lot of lanes! Great ride. I have to visit Atlanta someday.

I'm so glad I chose to like this video on Jul 25, 2017 because if wasn't for that it would have taken me forever to find this video. Amazing music!

I've seen what that traffic is like many times, nothing out of the ordinary, especially now since it's been widened and they added the ExpressLane.
Taking the long way home! Thanks for another ride!
Thanks for watching!

I-85 drops to FOUR lanes at 115?!?! It should be at least six all the way to Richmond, VA
It will eventually be widened to six the rest of the way through Georgia, it becomes six lanes again at Exit 19 in SC to Exit 81, then again at Exit 10 in NC for a good stretch.

Thanks Geoff, yes there are many roads in the US named after Pesident's and military heroes as well.
There really aren't that many execpt in the Chicago area Jimmy Carter was from Georgia.
My commute everyday! Great video!
Just in case you didn't know, they will be adding an exit ramp from I-85N to McGinnis Ferry soon.
Thanks, was not sure about that exit, good to know.
10 years later, they’ve only now started construction on that exit ramp. Doesn’t make me feel hopeful for GA-316’s transformation into a freeway.

Excellent work Freeway Jim! BTW, do you know where exactly their building the new ballpark in Gwinnett Co.?
Jon Stefanik Thanks, The Braves new ballpark is being built in Cobb County, near the I-75/I-285 interchange, Google it, they are going full steam ahead on the construction.
Ok I will. Should've known it would be near that.
Jon Stefanik The Gwinnett Braves already play there
2:01 the new bridge here in the Jimmy Carter exit looks alot better and nicer. It switched lanes once you cross it and switch back. So like, the right side was the left side.
Yes, it's called a "Diverging Diamond" like they have at the Ashford-Dunwoody, Pleasant Hill and Windy Hill exits
Would you say that Atlanta is growing NE and northward, as far as people and structures?
From an outside perspective it seems that way
It has been for decades really.
I am actually going to drive this next week on the way up to Charlotte.
I-85 is pretty much a West/Eastbound (especially in Montgomery, North of Lawrenceville, Charlotte, and Durham)
This is the main highway I use to go anywhere, I live off exit 101. Love this freeway
Good video, accompanied by a good soundtrack.
Thanks!

Andrew Silva You are welcome, I went through a lot of trial and error before figuring it out.
did you do a Winston Salem NC drive ??
+honeybun33 I've been through there but did not film anything.
¿ alguien me puede explicar que paso en 5:50 ???????????????????????
Yeah, I exited the Interstate, not sure what the great mystery is?

nice ride--looks like bad traffic jams like Chicago
wow man that is crazy the amount of lanes they have
Benjamin Spencer they'd are all even numbers so exsample:10 lanes on I-85 south and 10 lanes on I-85 north
Wow! Rivals freeways in CA for size. Largest in Louisiana will be 5 lanes in each direction when the I-10 expansion in Metarie is completed....I think. Wouldn't want to drive everyday in that.

I changed them, felt they were confusing to some people.
Great ride Jim and GDOT should extend the ETL and the express local lanes from exit 106 to the junction with I-985 and GA-317 due to heavy traffic at those exits
I agree, up to I-985 makes sense.
Technically, the interchange of 85 and 285 is called a stack interchange.
No kidding? Did I state anything inaccurate?
