I just acquired an antique serpentine dresser with this exact same problem on all the drawers. Will replacing drawer bottoms prevent this from happening again? Was the original wood too soft and created sag in order to gouge the bottoms before? Just wondering how to prevent gouging from happening again. Thanks for your input.

Does using a 1/4" piece of plywood diminish the value of the antique dresser?
I really can’t see three 1 1/2” brad’s/staples holding up the bottom on a drawer that size.
