In the mid-80's I worked at a body shop that got a contract with USPS to repaint several mail collection boxes. I and another guy went out in a non-marked pickup truck and collected said mailboxes. Nobody even questioned us. It felt pretty strange.
Oh, it didn't take us very long to unbolt them and load them in the truck. 7-10 minutes sounds about right.

    • @ibex485
      @ibex485 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@shakemiz Surely employers in all sectors always have a general duty to ensure their employees are fit to perform the job? An independent licensing body does not absolve the employer of their duties.
How many times have we heard of employers being sued when a truck is involved in a road collision and someone is injured or killed? Those drivers are licensed too. If the employer has no duty then how can they legitimately be sued?
Then there's Steve's favourite - the warranty of merchantability (or its equivalent for services). The employer has a legal duty to provide the service people pay for and ensure it is up to the required standard.
If an employer thinks that checking their employees are licensed is sufficient and all they need to do then they are being negligent. When a lawsuit (or worse - an inquest or criminal case) arrives, saying but these two bozos were licensed won't be a successful defense.

We could sure use it." Then, in discussing getting permission from the postal service, someone got the impression the someone else had already received permission from the postal service, so when it was bolted to the ground they thought "Well, we got permission," and took it anyway. Comedy ensues.

In post office terms the green boxes "Not for deposit of mail" are called "relay boxes". As you mentioned walking routes (not many of these now) would reload their mail sacks (carried over the shoulder) so as to not have too heavy a load to carry around. Both these boxes, and the blue ones (which have a deposit door/slot) are opened by a key that mere possession by unauthorized people is a big no-no (crime).

I worked as a carpenter/locksmith at a state university and we had housing apartments/dorms etc. The postal service wanted their locks installed on doors to mail rooms to access boxes from behind. I said sure leave the locks and a key and I’ll install and return key. They said no we will have someone with me as I installed them, they sure did. Watched as I did it and as I tried key they were there.

Back in around 1999/2000-ish, don't remember the year exactly, not important. But I saw a tv show about the world's dumbest criminals. And the one I remember most is about a man who was smuggling illicit substances via his suitcase through the airport. He saw the police had been sent in and he also saw the substance sniffing dogs and he panicked and picked up another random suitcase to try not to draw attention to himself. Turns out the suitcase he picked up also had the same kind of illicit substances inside it and he got arrested for smuggling illicit substances.

I talked to a man and he told me his story. He and his friend went to prison for a prank in his youth for stealing a 500lb bike rack. He was out in his car when he was drunk. In an instant, they had this funny idea of stealing a 15ft long heavy steal bike rack. It was a prank, just for fun. They picked it up, lifted it on the roof of the car and drove down main street with it on the top of their roof. Cops are always on main street in small towns. The cops saw them, red lights, they pulled over. Later, they both went to prison for this dumb stunt. I think back to my youth, at that time I had no life experience at all. I had no idea how very serious things can get in an instant. In small towns, these county cops are always out to put you in prison, especially if you are a young adult.

Stupid criminals make for very funny stories sometimes. My mother, who was a public defender for several years of her career, once heard a story from a colleague about the most foolish client *they* ever had:
He was accused of holding up a McDonald's in broad daylight, in downtown New York City, at lunch hour. There must've been forty people in that place who all saw the robbery happen.
Now, often too many witnesses are just as good for a defendant as no witnesses at all -- they end up disagreeing with each other, and everything gets confused. So it went in this case. When they were interviewed separately, no two witnesses could agree on pretty much anything. He was tall, short, fat, thin, Black, white, Latino, long-haired, shaven-headed... you name it.
There was only one thing they all agreed on, and every single one of them mentioned it unprompted: they said he was wearing a pair of bright gold lamé pants during the robbery.
The client my mom's colleague had to defend was caught four blocks away from the restaurant, carrying $2,000 in a McDonald's bag and *still wearing* the gold lamé pants.
Mom said that her colleague lamented that it would've actually been the perfect alibi. All he had to do was whip round the corner, take off the pants in an alley, drop them into a dumpster and walk away in gym shorts. Nobody would have ever looked twice at him.
As it was, Mom said, her colleague had a hard day defending that dude.

They need to be working for a NASCAR pit crew. Even in an emergency it takes a minute or two to unload and load the wheeled stretcher, and 99% of the drop boxes I've seen have bolts so rusty that it would take cutting them with a torch to remove them. Getting all 4 bolts out in 3-5 minutes sounds very suspicious unless one of them did it on a previous trip to prep for the theft. Most of the times I have seen the USPS replace a box, they had to pour a new slab with brand new bolts sticking out or drill new holes in the existing slab if big enough.
