BULL'S-EYE! Thing is, though....WNBA supporters Do Not/Will Not acknowledge to that fact! They think, just because they're playing basketball, they're just as good at entertainment as NBA/NCAA. Have seen more competitive Pick-Up games at neighborhood courts/gyms than in WNBA competition. You get out of something what you put in...Sadly, that's NOT the case in the WNBA. 25+ years in operation & only 1 year draw 10k+ fans?! IF this were a Normal business, Owners would more than likely have filed for bankruptcy....IF WNBA were "Normal" business entity....

Shaq was very genuine but Candace couldn't even look at him while he was talking, pure arrogance! Then told us how her next child that hasn't touched a basketball yet will fix the problem. Women didn't have a problem when the standards of many things were lowered to suit them, like the police force, Fire service and defence force etc. Has any female player publicly thanked the NBA for funding it or have they been too busy asking for more money. WNBA sounds a lot like marriage to me. Shaq has single handedly done more for the game and the community than the whole WNBA will ever do.
That arrogance and entitlement is a big part of the problem. Why alienate the people that actually are trying to help you? But WNBA players do it all the time.

I was a college level player at 5’11. I had a bad surgery on my left arm and crippled it. St 43 I ran across a group of all American women players. I challenged them and 2 of them played me one on one. Both were 6’. With one hand and 43 years old I destroyed both of them very easily. I laughed and went home because the other girls wouldn’t play me! They are high school level!

You nailed it. This is coming from the father of a 10byear old girl who absolutely loves playing basketball. I have an absolute blast watching my daughter and those girls play. At that age, they are learning the game, learning sportsmanship, learning how to grow their competitive spirit. Its exciting simply to watch them learn and grow and learn how to work as a team.
As you said, i like watching NCAA womens ball too. There is just something that takes away once they physically top out and rely completely on fundamentals and very little on athleticism. Its just plain boring.
The NBA needs to allow the women’s league to go on their own. No more subsidizing a league no one wants.

The WNBA has an audience one third the size of the NBA. If you base salaries on revenue generated the players of the WNBA are over paid.

As a woman myself, I totally agree with you lol. I love basketball, but I wouldn’t be caught dead at a WNBA game. Also, their attitudes are just awful - they give women a bad name, it’s embarrassing! They need to grow up and accept the fact that men are physically stronger than us, and that there’s nothing wrong with that. They should take Shaq’s advice, I think stuff like that would make the WNBA more entertaining.

You will never solve a problem by refusing to accept reality. I think that Shaq offered the best advice to make the game more exciting.
I used to officiate high school and college basketball. In high school basketball, the girls always play the first game, followed by the boys game. The crowds at the girls game were dismal. Only during the 4th quarter, would the gym begin to fill up. Years ago, the state athletic association went woke and decided the boys would play first and the girls would play second. The gym was always bigger during the boys game, but never as big as it was when the boys played the later game. That was because many parents and fans could not get off work in order to attend the boys games, which is the game that really drew the crowds. As a result, the schools and the state athletic association, and groups that benefited from revenue from concession stand sales, we losing money. As soon as the boys game was over, 3/4 of the crowd left. And they left right in the middle of the girls’ pre-game warmups, often interfering with them because there were so many people leaving that they would walk onto the floor. It was really embarrassing. The state association realized the consequences of going woke and switched back the following year. They have never made that mistake again.

The real heroes are the announcers. The fact that they can manage to keep up the facade of calling the games through missed layup after missed layup and not shoot themselves in the face out of shear frustration is a true testament to professionalism.
I'd laugh after a missed layup or even sigh if its no longer funny... they are indeed true professionals to keep straigt faces. Lowkey they need to be on wnba super max contracts for it

Thats for sure. I don´t have a problem with women sport. In fact, sometimes its better to watch then men sports. Not often though. In Tennis in Wimbledon, the men play so fast, that there is hardly any back and forth. Women Tennis in Wimbledon is often much more fun to watch. In the end, you still wanna see, what guy is winning the title.
As mentioned, sports lives off the personalities, of the people, doing it. In Tennis, in the era of Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, etc. - many people watched them play, cause those were great rivalies.
Every decent male Highschool team with the chance (not even the top programs) to win a state title would win the WNBA title... probably without loosing even one game. Its just genetics. I grew up playing football (or soccer like you americans call it). I played with 3 girls in our kids group. Played with them from age 7 till 12 after that it wasnt allowed anymore. Cause as soon as puberty starts, females are just not on the same level anymore. And I dont mean technically, just physically!
There are several scrimmage games of national womans football teams (search for the US one for example... the one that DEMANDS equal pay to the men) playing aginst 14-15 years old boys teams... and get blown out each and every time. Now think about 16-18 years old boys playing aginst those national teams... what do you think they would do to those women? The same would happen in your comparison when good male Highschool teams would play against WNBA teams!

Can confirm. I actually went to a WNBA game about 25+ years ago. Left before halftime. Easily the most boring sporting event that I’ve ever been to.
It really needs a Drive to Survive type of series or more behind the scenes media. It got my wife into Formula 1 because she could get to know the drivers and the drama behind everything. That way, they have an emotional stake in the players.
One time I had two wNBA tickets sitting on my dash, some idiots broke into my car and added two more tickets to it.

What would interest me would be a side by side comparison between the NBA and the WNBA. First one I'd like to see is shooting percentage. I watch a few WNBA games and it seems the shooting percentage is pretty low. That amounts to college or high school play, not professional play
I watch pro sports to see people do awesome things. Most decent boys high school games have more athleticism than WNBA games.
All not most there isn't a WNBA player that could play on an elite high school team

My wife went to Kentucky so obviously, the Men's NCAA game is the most watched in our house. We don't watch many regular season Men's NBA games until the second half is well underway when the players also seem to be more engaged. As with the Men's NCAA Tournament (and big parts of the NIT), the Men's NBA Tournament is the best basketball to watch on the planet and we rarely miss many games.
On the Woman's game at any level, I really couldn't tell you because my wife won't even click on a game on the menu that doesn't clearly show its a men's game, for fear the AI in the software will start nominating more women's games on our menu.

Well, I'm an old man and I have never seen a game. Shaq's suggestion to improve the watchability of the game was a very solid one. Make the baskets 9" high. Hell, the WNBA ball is already smaller than the NBA one.

The NBA struggled for a long time. There was the heyday of the Celtics with Russell, Cousy, Havlicek, et al, in the 60s, then the NBA almost died in the 70s, until Bird and Magic showed up in '79. They were entertaining, electrifying players. Then there was the Detroit Bad Boys and Michael Jordan and Shaq and David Robinson and Sir Charles and Hakeem, and then Kobe and LeBron and on and on.
All I ever hear out of the WNBA (when I hear anything at all) is a bunch of bitter women. Every man who's played basketball at the high school level or higher knows that no WNBA team would be competitive in any men's 4A, 5A, or 6A high school district in the country. The WNBA player's association refuses to do anything to make the game more exciting, like lowering the rim and shortening the court, and they're mostly a bunch of sullen malcontents. I mean, how many people would actually pay to spectate that sort of environment?
In short, their product just sucks.

Most women in the league are emotionally invested in the idea that women can play at the same level as men, which is why they insist on playing according to the male game's rules. Of course, if that were true there wouldn't be any need for a women's league at all--we could just make the NBA coed.

When he said the WNBA is boring because of the lack of entertainment and excitement to their games it reminded me of the Spurs in the early 2000s when non Spurs fans would say the Spurs are boring. As a Spurs fan at the time I thought they were haters but now I see what people were talking about. Yes Spurs were boring because they played fundamental basketball. They won championships but at the end of the day they were still looked at as boring and their tv ratings were abysmal. We wasn’t gonna see any Top 10 highlights on ESPN from a Spurs game and even the National Media knew this which was why the Spurs were barely talked about on tv and radio despite all the winning they did. It’s the same thing with the WNBA! Players believe they not the problem but fans think otherwise
I have heard a few times the "women's basketball is basketball in it's purest form" and I am not sure what that means. Does it mean they are better at the basics or fundamentals? If "the way the game is supposed to be played" means slower, less coordinated, less athletic, less energetic, and lower effort then I guess but I think the purest form would be the more refined and evolved game.

I think it alludes to the ball movement, "team" mentality, and lack of 1-on-1 isolation plays. The girls aren't good enough to play isolation (i.e. 'bully ball"), and you don't see as many fast-breaks or reliance on pure athleticism to score baskets. Basically, it's less fun lmao

The last game clip shown says it all for me. The girl running backwards to get back on defense falls down and the girl she's defending goes past her and shoots a wide-open airball that her team mate catches underneath the rim by herself and throws up a brick. I watch basketball to be oohed an awed not to be awwe really? And WTH?😂. Candace's reaction to shaq's comment or suggestion is probably the majority of what the women players would say in response. But that's the problem. They probably need to get over their pride and ego if they want what they're asking for, which is more publicity which would lead to more pay, and take some suggestions that could work in their favor. Because obviously the way it's going now is not working the way they want it to. And complaining about equal this or equal that is not always the correct way to be figuring out a problem. Sometimes, even we think that our plan is the way everything should be, there is a better plan and formula somewhere that could help us get where we want to be. We just have to get over our self and be open-minded to the possibility that there's another way. Or, just keep everything the same way it is and hope that something in the world is going to change, via osmosis,and all the sudden people will want to watch this more boring not as athletic game of NBA basketball that they have to compete with. Maybe the playing field needs to be leveled in some way such as the basket being dropped to 9 ft. It doesn't mean that's the solution but clearly something has to change because you just can't expect or will people to come spend their money to watch something that they're not overly impressed with or really interested in. At least think about it WNBA. It might serve you well to do so. And I truly wish you luck. #I LOVE hoops.

Why does it even have to be an issue to lower the rim. In the 90s, to get players off the paint they had to move the arc closer so players would shoot 3s more therefore moving people away from the paint. The league didn't have to ask for anyone's permission. What about the addition of the 3? Or the no-charge zone? The game changes. The game evolves. But a simple lowering of the rim in the WNBA has to be some sort of drama.

I am from Europe, not really ever watched women's basketball here or the wnba. I always wondered though, why dont they change the rules a bit so that they make the sport a bit better to watch. Like shorter hoops so that they can dunk or the 3 pointer line like one meter closer.
Let the goal down to 9ft. Make the court shorter. So they can dunk and cover the court faster. Give them unlimited fouls so defense can be extra aggressive. And let em fight from time to time like Hockey. Let the winning team from each game make more money. No set salary. The more you win the more you earn.

@@laryanryan9170 They play slower because they play on courts made for males. The game can be much faster and aggressive with a rule change and modifications of the court. Getting from one end to the other would be just as fast as the nba if the court was smaller.
