  • So... I decided to play around with 72 FPS. I do NOT recommend it. It took about 8 hours of my life, which I wasted making this. I also do not recommend AI interpolation. That makes the animation look funny and not good.
    I also got inspired by Mayde's video about 48FPS.
    Here it is: • 48fps animation

    Though I admire the work ethic and dedication you must've had to finish this, I feel like there are a number of areas where you could maximize the effectiveness of each frame. When there isn't any follow-through, overlap, natural timing, or anticipation to the character's movements, you can hardly notice the increased frame-rate. I'd suggest drawing your arcs on a separate layer, marking your timing along that line, and animating on top of it to really get the fluid effect you want. (Also, make sure your video is uploaded at the fps you want. Just from one animator to another.)

    • @Xenderman

      I think youtube only goes up to 60FPS, so maybe this isn't the best platform to post it in
      as for the other points, I am incapable of adding those elements. Keep in mind that I've only been animating for a year or 2 and haven't dived deep into arcs fully. I will try a few extra exercises, but if you look at the actual frames frame by frame, you'll notice they're extraordinarily inconsistent and change sizes on a whim. This is why I haven't added many of those elements yet
      great critique though!

    • @Sleepy12ftPanda
      @Sleepy12ftPanda 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@Xenderman Don't worry. I also thought arcs seemed really complicated, but they're actually quite simple once you start. You just draw a line, put dots on it, and draw your character over top. The rest about spacing, timing, and momentum you can feel out through practice. It's only intimidating at first.
      Keep it up!

    quick criticism, to convey a higher fps and make it seem as if its actually 72 fps, make sure to add a lot more movement, including the faces and body. with smooth movement, you can see how smooth 72 fps can actually be

    • @Xenderman
      @Xenderman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      well, I don't have the skillset to pull that off yet. If you look at some of my other animations, you'll notice a lack of consistency in drawing. This criticism acts more of a wake-up call to my inability to animate movement rather than a criticism on a single piece.
      Honestly, thank you for critiquing it in this way. This helps me far more than you realize

    • @Xenderman
      @Xenderman  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Correct, but the character action is entirely on 1's. This means that the character moving is the full 72FPS. Another thing about 24FPS is that animators barely use the actual framerate of 24FPS, and instead opt in to use 2's and 3's in animation, meaning the average framerate in a disney movie is around 8-12FPS.

      Videogame framerates and animation framerates are 2 entirely different things. While I get the sentiment that they're called the same thing and by technicality, mean the same thing, they're not. The interactive element in gaming makes the computer have to interpolate it in real time so that the framerate is less noticeable, kinda like keeping the movement at all times. But when you're animating a cartoon, you *shouldn't* keep it at a consistent framerate. Most of the time, animations are animated at 12 and 8 fps, with the occasional 24 for faster movements.

    • @foxeyestudios7021
      @foxeyestudios7021 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That makes sense seeing as there are frames that are the same. The redundancy in the animation requires less work in needing to redraw every frame seeing as you can duplicate parts of the drawing if not the whole drawing.

    • @Xenderman
      @Xenderman  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@foxeyestudios7021 The reasons why we hold drawings for multiple frames extends far beyond just saving time and animation. While that *can* be part of it, there are some things that just don't look right at higher framerates, such as slow movements. They more often than not, fail to deliver at higher framerates such as 24FPS. If you hold your frames longer as something decelerates or is slower to begin with, then you can sell the "slowness" of an animation far better than you could with 24FPS on 1's. This is why even The thief and the cobbler isn't true 24FPS, despite being the closest thing to it. You never claimed anything of the sort, but i see others claim that making the framerate lower is "lazy." While you most likely do not think that, I hope i at least got you to think more about how animators utilize framerates in interesting ways rather than just making it easier and faster to make, and I hope you'll start looking for these stylistic and interesting ways animators lowered the framerates in your favorite animated media. Spider-Verse is interesting if you want to look into that a bit.

      @@Xenderman Very true. I’m still new to making animations. As much as I hate to admit it, I assumed 60 fps was how it was supposed to go when I started out. I kept getting frustrated with it and nearly felt like giving up. I eventually learned lower frame rates not only save time but actually look better than “smoother” animation after seeing a side-by-side comparison of the same video with different frame rates. Higher frame rates do make an animation smoother, but can make everything still look too static even with movement. The same goes with cinematography, which is where I learned these principles. There are some cases where higher frame rates are better or even necessary, like if you’re trying to slow down a clip or capture fast movement, and it’s not uncommon for a single video to have clips recorded in different fps and converted to one consistent frame rate. As for your recommendation on seeing the Spider-Verse, I have seen the film and I know what you’re trying to point out. Yes, the animation in Spider-Verse is noticeably slower than other animations I’ve seen. That gives it a kind of “flipbook” appearance in the animation which is visually appealing. I appreciate you weren’t quick to assume I meant lower frame rates means “lazy” animation, which was not at all what I meant. I already know first hand how problematic higher frame rates can be. They take forever to make and the final result isn’t always great, therefore throwing all your hard work down the drain. When your character at the end of this video said “I’m going to die”, I assumed that meant you suffered in a similar manner as I did when I tried animation at higher frame rates. Thanks for your insight, I believe I have learned a little bit more about animation, not just the creative process but also the art direction in animation.

      I animated the animation on 1's. You have no clue what you're talking about. You may know the definition of the term but you don't understand it. Any animator worth their time will never use the term like you do. Using the term to belittle someone's animation is never used by people who know their stuff. It's barely used in criticism. While 1s, 2s. Etc. Are used, its never to fully criticize animation. It's used to help guide animators. What IS used to criticize animation is the fluidity of the motion. Not smoothness, fluidity. Fluidity is attainable regardless of being on even 5's. James Baxter animated a character on 5s once when interacting with quasi. You may technically know the definition of the term, but you don't understand it.
      Tl;dr: animators know when you aren't using their terms right. You may think it makes you look smart, but to people who know better, it does the opposite.

      @@cheesey_sharky the mouths on any cartoon are never the amount of fps that they're on. Disney doesn't animate its character actions on 1's, nor does dreamworks typically. If I animated it in 72fps, the mouth would look awful and wouldn't work as lip sync.
