Ivar wasn’t afraid of dying, nor was he afraid of not being welcomed into Valhalla. In episode 18, during a conversation scene with his brother, he expressed his concern that “No one talks about Ragnar anymore. That frightens me”. This is what he was referring to when he died in Hvitserk’s arms. Being afraid that his achievements weren’t enough for his name to be remembered in the future. Hvitserk understood immediately what Ivar meant, answering “No one will ever forget Ivar the Boneless”. Since Hvitserk, in this final episode is linked to the historic Guthrum who was baptized and made a prince by Alfred, this would also mean that Hvitserk would go on to rule the Danelaw in England, a large Viking kingdom, while he would maintain peace with Alfred. Ragnar’s dream was never only to find new land to farm, his wish was to see both Christians and pagans, Vikings and Saxons living together in peace and respecting each other. With his sacrifice, Ivar made sure that Ragnar’s legacy and dreams were finally fulfilled.

The hardest part is thinking of this with a smile but then remembering that Ragnar renounced the old gods and the only son he would be able to meet again were Hvitserk.. =/ (And perhaps Ubbe once he dies)... or the gods could have been in awe and let them in to Valhalla anyways..

Hvitserk was forced to be converted as part of a treaty with Alfred to make peace. This is taken from real history from the Viking leader Guthrum. Guthrum was a leader of the Great Army that invaded England to avenge Ragnar, but he lost the battle of Edington in Wiltshire to Alfred. As part of the treaty Guthrum converted to Christianity under the name Aethelstan and went on to be the ruler of East Anglia under this name, starting the Danelaw. This real history was used for Hvitserk's ending.
Vikings was never going to end in a grand way. The Vikings faded from history relatively quickly from the height of their power slowly crumbling and giving way to Christianity. The ending of Vikings embraces this during Floki and Ubbes conversation. Floki was devastated by the loss of his wife, child, and best friend Ragnar. He thought the Gods would save him and lead him to Iceland, alas when he found the Christian cross there in the volcano his faith was shaken again. The old ways of the Vikings brought death to Ragnar, Lagertha, Bjorn, Ivar, Harold, and so many. This is why Floki says to let the past go, hes accepted just living in the moment in peace. Hes not sure of the Gods existence anymore just as Ragnar doubted them.
The ending was so sweet, when Floki said Ubbe looked like Ragnar it really did look like the old man was sitting once again with his best friend who had died a lifetime ago now. I lost it when the theme song started playing because it was the end of Vikings. All these characters will be missed by so many, and Vikings will be one of the greatest shows for a long time. We really saw a whole family of people grow from youth to the end to even the next generation so the attachment is strong. We don't need to be too sad however because I know they are all feasting together in Valhalla.
    Skol!

Thank you for your comment and adding some context to Hvitserks ending. Very interesting to know! I love learning about the history of the Vikings and this show was what ignited my interest in Vikings history. They portrayed it so well!
After some time to mull over the finale I am very satisfied with how they ended it, I always guessed it would end with the gradual fading out of the Viking ways. I still find it so satisfying to know how much it influenced the history of England (and elsewhere). I actually went for a walk with my family in the Wessex area yesterday and it felt quite surreal to be walking around there after watching the Vikings finale. I hope to visit Lindisfarne one day too 🙂
I am very sad that the show is over now, though! Guess I’ll have to rewatch it (again) and look forward to the spin off. I also like to think they are all living it up in Valhalla together! Skol! 🍻

i liked the ending personally. Ivar did a ragnar and made his own course and he wanted to die in battle rather than from his illness. The brother staying with alfred to shows the golden age of vikings coming to an end. I would like to see more episodes with ubbe and the rest with the natives and how it turns out.

That’s a great point about him wanting to die in battle rather than from his illness. And yeah, after having some time to recover from the emotion and think over the finale, I am satisfied with the way it ended. I believe when Ivar said ''I'm afraid'' when he died he didn't mean he was afraid to die, but he was afraid that he would be forgotten. The ending was perfect for me, when I saw Ubbe and Floki sitting on the beach it was almost like Floki and Ragnar were sitting together. It was great to see all the brothers represent some part of Ragnar. Ubbe had his desire to travel and explore, Bjorn was a great warrior and united all the people, Ivar had his intelligence and strategic mind, Hvitserk struggled with faith and new cultures (and drugs) just like Ragnar, and Sigurd well...represented dead Ragnar.
Vikings might actually be the best show I have watched, I loved it from start to finish :D

And you raise a good point, about Ivar’s last words. I hope it pleases him to know, that he’s still remembered now. All hail Ivar the Boneless!
And yeah, I really loved that aspect of the Ragnarsons, each echoing an element of their father. Such a nice touch, from the writers.
Yeah, we really loved it too. Such a great series, glad it’s getting the love it deserves.

Enjoy Valhalla. My king, my heart, my love 💙IVAR THE BONELESS💙. Such a badass yet again this episode. Broke my heart into pieces when he died, I cried so hard I couldnt see, love that his 2nd father Floki, felt his death. I cried even harder when my baby finally dropped his facade and admitted he was scared, most likely scared that he still wouldn't be accepted into Valhalla since hes a cripple.
Ivar has always been a lonely sad little boy deep down, just desperate for love from his family and to be seen as an equal. Had crows and someone feeling Ivars death so makes me realise even more that Ragnar and Ivar were truly special to the gods more than the others. Odin only ever spoke to Ivar and rallied the sons of Ragnars death, plus even Harbourt saw Ivar as special, visited him and took some of his pains onto himself. Nobody will ever forget Ivar and hes the only viking I've heard of and learned about growing up lol. Alex has been outstanding in this show, this was his show after Travis left, he has been carrying the show since then and i always knew that they couldnt kill him and still have a show without him, so makes sense that they killed him last episode.
I knew all along that Ivar could never kill Hvitserk, so happy they finally admitted their love for one another, Hvitserk was always meant to be with Ivar and Ivar was meant to save him and show everyone how much of a legend he is. I think they never showed us Valhalla and everyone reuniting so we could imagine it ourselves and envision how we see it exactly. Floki felt his adopted son Ivars death and will join him & Ragnar in Valhalla soon by the sounds of it (Floki telling Ubbe hes gonna die soon)
The meaning to Ivar controlling his warriors to me was that Ivar lives in all of them, that"s what I took from that badass moment. I hated and felt cheated when some scared boy killed Ivar however after awhile I realised, Ivar chose to let him kill him, Ivar could have killed that boy 3 times in the time he had before he got stabbed. Also think its amazing how again Ivar was like his father Ragnar, Kinda choosing his death and owning his fate in england also the parallels of both Ivar and Ragnar saying "Dont be afraid" to the people who they gave permission to kill them or send them to their death. Ragnar said it to Ecbert in 4x14 and Ivar said it in this episode. Ivar is definitely in Valhalla, I heard the ravens as soon as he died, plus Floki felt it, Ivar is legendary just like his father. Wish we could have seen Ivar's son once or that Ivar could have once at least, glad that he gets to grow up with Igor around, who adored and loved his father.
I'm sure Katia did too but she held back and didnt let herself fall too hard since she realised Ivars in love with Freydis still not her.

    • @-breakofdawn-
      @-breakofdawn- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Love everything you said, and I agree with most of it except the being afraid - he was “blessed” by the Gods as Harbard/Odin told him, and in episode 18 during his conversation with Hvitserk, Ivar also says himself that the Gods will welcome him into Valhalla - he has no doubt about that. But the first time he EVER expressed a feeling of fear was when he stated that the fact that no one talked about Ragnar anymore “frightened” him. You need to remember that statement during this final death scene. Hence, Hvitserk reassured him “No one will ever forget Ivar the Boneless”, instead of telling him “don’t worry, you’ll go to Valhalla”. Ivar’s not afraid of death, nor of being denied access to the halls of the Aesir, he’s afraid that his achievements weren’t enough for his name be remembered.

Ivar killed Sigurd by accident and was taunted for years, we already know he has no impulse control once hes enrage. Bjorn was during war, Ivar outsmarted him and got to him before Bjorn could him. Lagertha killing Aslaug is what kicked everything off and made people pick sides. Ivar and Bjorn both chose their mothers and both had special bond with their mothers. Ivar probably more so since he spent most of childhood indoors and carried by her. Ivar has actually never felt truly loved by any of his family except for his mother if u remember what hes said during his vulnerable moments. They always pitted him first before anything.
Also ingrid respects the gods and the Ragnars legacy so of course she was concerned and surprised about Ivars death and not Haralds. She never wished Harm on him after Bjorn since him and Hvitserk are all that's left there.

    • @TheDragonTheHound
      @TheDragonTheHound  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As someone who has struggled with his temper for years, I can understand his regrets over killing Sigurd. And I do agree that he killed Björn in battle. And I think we can all agree that Ivar was treated pretty terribly, as a child. It’s also worth noting that while Ivar was a terrible, terrible king, he was also pretty much a child at the time, and never should have been in that position.
The problem isn’t any of those individual actions. The problem is, when one character does all of those things, over the course of about 3 seasons. It does make them quite hard to like... plus, all the burning people alive was rather upsetting.
But, once he grew up, calmed down, and made friends with a scrappy young kid, we got to EP see the man he could have been, if he’d been given the chance. And THAT was a good man. I’ll miss that man.

He wasn’t afraid of death, but of not being remembered. Yes, Ivar died like Ragnar - not in battle (Ragnar didn’t die in battle), but sacrificing himself for a “bigger, bolder plan” while Alfred - like Ecbert during Ragnar’s sacrifice - was watching. Ivar also gave a speech before his death like Ragnar. Ivar’s sacrifice in front of Alfred was a “mirror” scene of Ragnar’s sacrifice in front of Ecbert.

    Banshee is a great series.
It's about a criminal who was released after imprisonment and he wants to repeat the diamonds he gave to his girlfriend before. He comes to the city of Banshee where she lives and there assumes the identity of a sheriff who was previously killed. The series is very complex, very brutal, a lot of sex in the first season (but it will be less) and Homelander from "The Boys" plays the leading role. Great series.

Imagine if some american tv show decided to make King Arthur Irish instead of English.
Björn Ironside is kinda like Swedens King Arthur. A legendary king of Sweden. I was honestly so sad that they made him norwegian in the series "Vikings". If they chose danish i could have accepted it better eventhough it too would have been completly wrong.
The reason the showrunners did this is clearly because Norway is simply the most beautiful of all the scandinavian countries. But it damn well hurt my swedish soul! As the sagas tell it..
From the saga of Ragnar Lothbrok:
The sons of Lodbrok went raiding in many lands: England, Normandy, France, and out over Lombardy. But it’s said the furthest they got was when they took the town of Luni. And one time they thought of going to Rome and taking that. And their warrings have become the most famous in all the northlands where Norse is spoken. And when they come back to their realm in Denmark, they shared out the lands between them. *Bjorn Ironside got Uppsala and central Sweden and all the lands that belong to that*, and it’s told that Sigurd Snake-in-Eye had Zealand and Scania and Halland, and Oslo Fjord, and Agder as far as Lindesnes and a good portion of the Norwegian Uplands, while Hvitserk had Reidgotaland and Wendland.

    From wikipedia:
*Björn Ironside[a] was a Norse Viking chief and legendary king of Sweden*, who appears in Norse legends. According to the 12th- and 13th-century Scandinavian histories, he was the son of notorious Viking king Ragnar Lothbrok. He lived in the 9th century, being securely dated between 855 and 858.[1] Björn Ironside is said to have been the first ruler of the Swedish Munsö dynasty. In the early 18th century, a barrow on the island of Munsö was claimed by antiquarians to be Björn Järnsidas hög or Björn Ironside's barrow.[2][3]
