- This week we fancied branching out of our British bubble and thought we would try pronouncing some classic Irish names. We love our Irish neighbours and as well as having the most amazing accents, they have brilliant names, some of which are quite hard to pronounce for us English lot!

They're from a different language though? It's not supposed to adhere to english spelling rules, they make perfect sense in Irish
Exactly, the phonetics are different. Even then, some of them, like I mentioned in my comment really aren't that different using "enough" and "Sean" as examples. H as a phonetic modifier exists in English too.
Totally agree! It makes me sick when they all say: Hey this name doesn't make sense?....UHhh, maybe is because it makes sense in Irish though ! Anyway, they are funny because they cannot pronounced these right ahahahhahaha

I think people forget that Irish names derive from the Irish language so of course they aren't going to follow the same language and pronunciation rules as the English language....

As an English teacher I've been taught that other people's names, namely those of foreign students, are not to be called "strange" and above all not to be made fun of.

That's because it's NOT tragic. If this is a tragedy in anyone's life, they have no TRUE problems. They're just having fun with video content. Life will be as easy or difficult as we make it. 😁

We don't think your names are basic (clearly my name isn't Irish although it translates to Eilís Nic an tSaoir), it's just our native language.
I'm fluent in Irish and I always just forget that people don't understand out letter blends :P x

Mauve is a colour. Maeve (my name) is spelled my way or alternatively meadhbh, medb or meabh
They don't make sense to u because it's a different language so we have different ways of pronouncing the sounds of different letters together
I'm only on the first name and I'm sorta pissed. Like usually I find these videos funny (cus I'm irish) but please don't say these names are weird or that "oh, but there isn't a V, so how does it sound like a V." In Gaeilge (irish) mh makes a V sound. Ok sorry I just wanted to rant.

If you understand the barings of a language, then its not hard. I'm British and speak 6 languages so its not exactly difficult to constitute that two letters can make one sound. Happens in other languages like Greek, μπ is b

The Irish language is 1000 years older than English, so maybe it’s English is wrong. Really angers me when the English mock us for our beautiful language.

Ciarán and Kieran are diff names
Mauve is pronounced as you said it isn't.. the Irish one is spelled Meadhbh or Meabh depending how Irish the parents decided to be.. you'll find that a lot with names e.g. Eoghan/Eoin, Orfhlaith/Orlaith/Orla, Iarla/Iarlaith etc..
Not much can really make me laugh out loud, but hearing you two pronouncing these names are cracking me up. Loved this.
Tbh it's our culture, we have different ways of spelling them but when u grow up in Ireland u do get the hang of it but ur names are actually easy

You do know that Irish is a different language which is why Irish names are spelt differently and follow different rules... it’s not weird, it’s just not english.

I don't get why people are always saying "why isn't it spelled like it sounds" about Irish names? This is the case with so many languages around the world but people who speak English for some reason don't get why there spelled the way they are
It's a different orthographic system...everyone keeps going on about "how little sense Irish names make". They're from Irish Gaelic, so of course the spelling rules aren't the same as English.

They still pronounced Saoirse wrong and left out the fadas on some names meaning that they will be pronounced incorrectly (Fadas are important and needed !!!)
Ciarán and Kieran are pronounced differently! Donnchadh also pronounced incorrectly , and Mauve is pronounced as you said it in the video but is actually spelt as Maeve/Maebh .

It's the grammar yk, a mh is pronounced v when the last vowel is a broad vowel but pronounced a w when the last vowel is a thin vowel

My name is Gráinne and I tell you its so funny listening to people trying to say it lol
The majority or not all of people I know (I’m Irish) don’t find American or English names hard or pronounce. We’re fluent in English and we learn Irish in school from the age of five but a lot of Irish people are better at English than Irish and leave school without knowing how to have a conversation in Irish. Gaeltacht regions (mostly Irish speaking parts of the country) are a different story though, the majority of people born into these regions are fluent in both languages.
What about the name Caolan or Keelin? I used to pronounce it cayolan.
In the Irish language "mh" and "bh" make a "v" sound and a lot of other letters behind a h are silent
That video was so funny to watch since Joel and Lia are english. I think these "funny Irish names" may have come from the language people spoke before they were forced to learn English when England took control of Ireland.

Ya do realize that Irish is a separate language and they use Irish grammar rules. The Irish only use 18 letters from the alphabet These letters do not exist in Irish j, k, q, v, w, x, y, z, Letter combinations bh or an mh create the V sound.
There is no K in the Irish language so whenever you see a word like Celtic it’s pronounced with a hard K
So I hope that helps you out when you’re looking at a foreign language.

MH and BH in Irish are pronounced like a v since we don't have one in our Gaeilge but most foreign country's do not understand and sometimes the D is silent and there's also Fada's(Accents) missing from half the names
OMG!!!!! When I first heard of the name Grainne in a different video, I decided if i was ever gonna have a daughter, I would call her Grainne as well
My grandchildren are Roisin and Tadhg. We live in the states and no one ever gets it right and Tadhg gets Ty even after explaining how to say it.

Yeah, I love how diverse Irish as a language is. I studied it in college and am amazed at how differently words can be pronounced. In fact, there is a website called "Teanglann" that I use sometimes just to listen to the different pronunciations of the same word through the dialects :P x

My brothers name is kieran and it kee-ran and when I was little I called him cian kee-an cause I'm Irish but I'm in uk now so I'm British some times they call him kieron
Some of the letters in the names have a completely different sound/pronunciation, so, no wonder they are spoken wrong. And yes, I'm English. I have a few Irish friends, one is called Darragh (Dara) and one called Deaglan (Declan), there is Phelan (Falen) and also Tadhg (tige or Tyg).
