  • Just sharing my testing methods, prove your test gear before touching! They are your eyes!
    DIYers don't understand how these devices work, use it to your advantage IMHO before having to get a tone tester out.

    We use the same gpo testers, but have a lightbulb in the circuit. Trips it easily if earth and neutral are swapped. I did find it odd that those testers couldn't tell though.

      It's a known fact why upon testing you remove the M.E.N. and test for earth first. AS3017 states it in writing and made this example to prove it to those that don't test properly!

    Decent meters have PTCs and NTCs to stop some of the consequences of stupidity so you can get away with using continuity to trip RCDs, not implying that there has been stupidity in the way Trev is using the meter, but that meter is still a UNI-T and I wouldn't personally be holding onto it poking around 240. Take a look at the factory fuses in it and compare with the fuses in something better. UNI-T makes a million different variations of almost identical looking meters so hard to tell what would be in this one but I'm going to guess not that impressive. The clamp makes a handy 3rd hand. Still, it's a better choice of meter than I used to see some people using on 3 phase in the past.

      Not to mention most electricians don't own tone testers that you could inject across a couple of phases. The one I have is rated for cat 3 @ 300V but fully understanding your meters limitations can potentially save your life.

      @@TradieTrev I dunno mate, it's still a UNI-T. I might cop a bit of flack for saying it but at the end of the day it's still a China meter where the CAT ratings mean nothing, and ironically you can buy the 210 series off aliexpress for about $30 depending on the seller and the bullshit accessories bundle. Just the opinion of a retired has been of course.🌩

    With the cabac RCD tester/ PowerPoint tester if you were to hit the test button with the NE transposition it wouldn't trip the RCD, correct?

    • @TradieTrev
      @TradieTrev  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's correct, but you should be relying on a rcd meter that does your 0 & 180 degree phase angle and it tells you the trip time in milliseconds. Not a real exciting machine, must of left that footage on the editing floor.

    What model is your switchboard? I like that it seems to have plenty of space beneath the DIN rails.

    What is your goto RCBO for residential if you dont rate the clipsal resimax?

      The newer models are meant to fix the issue I describe in the video. Have you seen the newer ones they've got "PowerTag" where you can turn any circuit into a functional power monitoring device on your phone. Far as I know Schneider are the only ones with an add-on modules. All the other ones I've seen you need modbus cts, making it look more an industrial control panel. Not to mention the time and cost.

      @@TradieTrev I've only seen the Max9 range in their promotion stuff, never seen it installed in the wild. I do mainly commercial so all the monitoring is via CTs and BMS.

      Don't expect your average person to understand what I'm on about George, it's more of a talking point for my fellow electricians, I've been sharing lots of my videos on facebook.

      There's a reason why our trade requires a licence; The inexperienced person could never solve an issue and they could kill themselves or loved ones attempting it.
