LOOK OUT!!! Insane Landing Rwy 27 Telluride in a Citation CJ4

  • Flying the Citation CJ4 into the 2nd highest public use airport in the continental US. Most approaches are conducted to runway 9, but this video shows the challenge navigating hazardous terrain as you proceed into a dramatic landing on runway 27. This is not the "working title" version, it's the real thing!

    I landed a Pilatus PC-12NG on Runway 27 there, and it was a challenge! Nice video and well done flying the approach. But the REAL challenge at Telluride is the Localizer RWY 9 approach followed by a missed approach. You are in the clouds and cannot see the 14,000 foot mountains ahead. Looking east in visual conditions reveals that you are flying the miss towards a U shaped chain of mountains well above the elevation of Telluride. This means you had better fly the published 180 degree climbing turn missed approach perfectly, or else...

    That’s a hell of a precise non-precision approach! You made that look incredibly easy and it’s definitely not! Great work!

    Landed there in A100 and B200 King Airs several times back in the late 80s. Back in those days, before all the explosive development, you could come right over Black Bear pass, a long, low-power glide at 140 KIAS and land straight-in if nobody was comin' the other way. Very steep descent but the King Air handled it w/ aplomb. The dip in the middle was MUCH bigger, then, so you had to chase the runway down and be _sure_ to be grounded before the runway started climbing. Always glad to be down, very exciting flying for sure. Followed by a week of skiing or driving / hiking the high country, loved being there.
    Takeoff in the A100 was like a carrier launch, great initial acceleration followed by lackadaisical climb. B200, lackadaisical acceleration but great climb once you passed the opposite threshold. The dip seemed to be helping acceleration, but once airborne, the runway followed you UP. It was rare to be higher that a couple hundred feet AGL before going off the cliff added a thousand feet (temporarily). Always thought I'd have to fly down the river canyon in a single-engine situation, probably for miles.

    Nice flying, Rich. I have never seen a CJ4 land RW27 ..... not for the faint hearted. Pilots who are not familiar with the airport won't appreciate this video. I have landed at TEX many times on both runways in a Saratoga. Coming in to R27, you have to be very careful to not get near the ski slopes straight ahead of you on the dwnwind or the Telluride police will be meeting you at the terminal. Be careful out there, folks.

      It isn’t. Just another 7,000 foot runway. I flew the 182 there a couple years ago.
      Clear sky and a light wind from the west.
      A 182 800 pounds under gross isn’t much of a challenge to land anywhere.
      Never did see any ski slope police for over flying the ski slopes.😒

    That was an excellent short field landing for that aircraft. When I landed there in my 50kt Kolb in 2014, I touched down right at threshold and turned off at the first entry point. Very memorable flying country, wouldn't have missed it for anything..

      @@mikeryan6277 DA was 10,500ft as indicated by the live sign at the runway entrance. The Kolb performed well, little difference noted. Climbed on up to 13,500ft where it got too cold and slow climb to continue. That was a FireStar with Rotax 503, carried around the country in a trailer. • @richyj14
      @richyj14  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      500 feet above the terrain immediately below but that comes from the radar altimeter. Have to be very careful of those in instrument conditions when you have fast rising terrain like in this case from the valley floor. Certainly wasn’t 500 feet above runway elevation at that callout. There have been some well publicized accidents of pilots incorrectly relying on the radar altimeter in mountainous environments to their peril. That callout comes from the EGPWS system, essentially the terrain avoidance system. Obviously in this case it was VFR.
