  • How to repair vent screens for crawlspace to keep out the rodents.
Replacing crawlspace vents is an effective way to prevent rodents from entering your home. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you replace your crawlspace vents to keep rodents out:
    1. Assess the Situation
Inspect the Vents: Check the condition of your existing crawlspace vents. Look for damage, gaps, or holes that rodents could exploit.
Measure the Vents: Measure the dimensions of your current vents so you can purchase the correct size replacements.
    2. Choose the Right Replacement Vents
Material: Opt for metal vents, as these are more durable and rodent-resistant than plastic.
Mesh Size: Choose vents with a mesh size no larger than 1/4 inch. Smaller mesh will help prevent rodents from squeezing through.
    3. Gather Tools and Materials
    Replacement crawlspace vents
Screwdriver or drill (depending on how your vents are attached)
Caulk or sealant (optional, for sealing gaps)
Wire mesh or steel wool (if extra protection is needed)
    Work gloves and safety glasses
    4. Remove the Old Vents
Loosen and Remove Screws: Use a screwdriver or drill to remove the screws or fasteners holding the old vent in place.
Remove the Vent: Carefully pull out the old vent. Be cautious of any sharp edges or debris.
Clean the Opening: Remove any dirt, debris, or old caulking from the opening.
    5. Install the New Vents
Fit the New Vent: Place the new vent into the opening. Ensure it fits snugly.
Secure the Vent: Use screws or fasteners to secure the vent in place. Make sure it’s tightly fastened to prevent any gaps.
Seal Around the Vent (Optional): Apply caulk or sealant around the edges of the vent to seal any small gaps.
    6. Add Extra Rodent Protection (Optional)
Install Wire Mesh: If you want extra protection, you can install wire mesh over the vent opening before placing the vent. Use a smaller mesh size (e.g., 1/8 inch) for added security.
Use Steel Wool: Stuff steel wool into any small gaps around the vent before sealing with caulk.
    7. Inspect and Maintain
Regular Inspections: Periodically check the vents for damage or wear and tear.
Maintain Ventilation: Ensure that the vents are not completely sealed off, as proper ventilation is necessary to prevent moisture buildup in the crawlspace.
    8. Consider Other Entry Points
Inspect the Crawlspace: Look for other potential entry points for rodents, such as gaps around pipes or wires. Seal these areas with caulk or steel wool.
By following these steps, you can effectively replace your crawlspace vents and keep rodents out of your home.

I cannot find the aluminum crawlspace vent that you showed from Home Depot. Do you have by any chance the item number that I can find on their website?

Great video. Thank you. So, how do we best deal with those rodents once they have come in?

I’m in the middle of doing this right now … place a camera near the vent where they are going in and out and you’ll start to see their patterns (rats) - then place rats traps near the opening outside and wait until you trapped them all - then after a few days of no activity you can close the vent - that’s my plan anyway :)

I was going to say that I have a feral cat scratching under my floor. I can’t tell if it’s inside or out roaming so when I do the repair work, I’m unsure as to whether or not I’ve trapped it inside or outside. How do I deal with this animal?

Set traps after you seal up the openings that they entered!

    Great video,
Question though what/how do I move the wires? I'm not sure if I even need these random cable wires anymore since everything is streamed online now..

    • @Therealhomeinspectionauthority
      @Therealhomeinspectionauthority  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

If the wires are no longer in service just cut them. If they are still in service you can notch a small opening in the screen if they are to hard to re-route thru the wall.

My house has the vent that you said is for roof soffits. Wouldn’t that keep rain out better? How do you know it’s insufficient venting..?

No, it was not design for what you were asking, 35 years handyman (old school / do things right, or do not do it) the title on this give you a hint, my experience show me this gentleman got knowledge, and sharing it!!!..the screen vent will never get rain inside , why? it is protected by the roof!

You need a contractor who understands roof/attic venting to determine if your home has sufficient ventilation.

Crawlspace vent screens are almost always damaged by contractors or homeowners when performing electrical or plumbing upgrades. Try not to damage your vent screens to keep rodents from entering your crawlspace and possibly into your living area.

Having a vented crawl space is the worst possible thing for the home. There is absolutely zero science to support it and yes, I can prove it.

I just watched your TH-cam channel videos, your videos are very nice and professional. But the SEO score of your video is very low. So your video is not getting ranked. If you want, I will help you to rank 100% by doing SEO and promotion of your video. it's an organic way.
