Great car but boy this is one of the best episodes ever, just because the dialogue between Jay and Bob is so original and honest.

Whatca great episode. Years later it is still here to enjoy. Two car gentleman bantering in a lost language of old cars and nostalgia.?Absolutely loved the chemistry between them and the exchanges. Classic stuff Mr. Leno. Thank you

I really like seeing an episode of a "regular" guys hot rod. Nothing too fancy, messy trunk, and not heaps of money dumped into it. Just a guy that loves his classic car. Great episode Jay!

This may have been my favorite epsode so far. It was a trip down memory lane because I used to ride my 10 speed from San Pedro to lions in the summer time just to get a glimpse of what was cool & quick. When I graduated HS and my folks gave me my keys. I'd go there for grudge night and cruise Hawthorne & Crenshaw from Del Amo to Palos Verdes dr. and up PCH from Redondo beach past El Segondo street racing after Lions had closed in late 72. We were'nt being anti social but I spent 'bout 18 months (11th & 12 grades) working on my GS 430 to take it to Lions and 6 mos after I got my keys to keep, well the county declaired it a public nusance and closed it. Thousands of hot roders lost our home drag strip. Then 'bout 10 years later the same thing happened to OCIR (Orange county international raceway). We need more legal drag strips!
Thanks for the blast from the past and a glimpse of the fast.

Growing up in the Philadelphia area in the sixties, you never saw roadsters. For that matter, I can only remember one 1930's car in the street scene and that was around 1971 or 72. Now, they are everywhere. I never owned one but they are beautiful!

  • @kaa522

Nice car, nice to see how he's maintained it so well. I've owned my 1948 Dodge Sedan with Suicide Doors since I was 14 which was 54 years ago. Dad bought it for me to learn on and drive when I turned 16. (He didn't want me anywhere near his 63 Ford) I hope to have it ready to drive to my 50th HS reunion this year.....Too bad the A&W is gone...

Jay made a statement that was very true, growing up in the 60's in a very middle of the middle class for boys like myself that wasn't very sports oriented really had only cars to spend our free time with, always very cheap and often barely running, we had to keep them going ourselves. Junkyards were our playgrounds. It gave us a sense of mechanical things and how stuff works. If I chose to I could literally dis-assemble and put back together an auto engine and have it work, very few kids coming of age today can say that, something somewhere has been lost in our society.

What a great episode, I so enjoyed listening to him tell the story of hot rodding in the early days in California. What a pleasure to have heard his stories, really should write a book or at the very least have a sit down interview with Jay where they chat about hot rodding and drag racing for an hour or so. Sure hope that car ends up in Jays collection some day as it is a piece of hot rod history that deserves a place where it is valued.

Must have been a lot of respect from Jay for his guest as it really showed. 👍 I'm currently 72 and so felt the magnetic pull of California hot rods during the 60s but the best I did was a 57 Chevy for my first car. Though a 2dr hardtop, being from Michigan it was already on its 3rd round of bondo and far from a hotrod with 3 on the column and a 283 2barrel under the hood. Still, it was miles ahead of my next car, a Studebaker Lark with a 6cyl. I thought of it as a Kleenex box on wheels.

Pardon the obvious repetition but it is one of the best bench racing sessions in this series. Ya gotta love the natural flow, as the time honored knowledge and car geekish lingo leaves no air jet unscrewed. Leno's off the cuff "Senior Package" {Great!} to his ribbing about the mystery babe in the vintage photo do nothing but egg on the kindled spirit between the two. One can relate to 40-50 year ownership afflictions, I've my Henry J- first car bought 50 years ago- while in grade school. From the pages of Rod & Custom to angle hair and color wheels at the annual Ray Farnner World of Wheels Custom Auto Show. The very first Street Rod Nationals in Peoria to the local dust bowls on Saturday nights. Wished i wudda stayed writing for Rod Action Magazine. Wish I had kept that 65 2 + 2 that I sold about 35 years ago - 65 miles away and found thru a fluke via the internet- to discover that very car has survived and is now seven miles from where I now live. I was laughed at -paying a grand for a 14 year old very solid fastback. Still have the "Mustang Mike" letter addressed to me from Ford- and the promo Mustang model they sent me in response to one 11 year olds praise for their new car. Ahh the memories such videos stir and that passion that oozes thru the veins like gear oil thru a quick change. It's not that often when those spontaneous whims of rubber spent still fill the air .as they effortlessly do here. Makes one wanna flop in Hot Rods To Hell tonight.
