America Stunned Japan With The Invention of Mark 14 Torpedo Which Destroyed Japanese Navy in WW2

    During World War II, American submarine commanders faced challenges with the Mark 14 torpedo, particularly when the Tonan Maru No. 3 tanker was abandoned in the waters. Lieutenant Dan Daspit, the captain of the US submarine Tinosa, successfully launched four torpedoes, but the tanker did not explode as planned. Despite firing multiple torpedoes, none of the 15 lethal Mark 14 torpedoes exploded. The USS Seawolf fired eight torpedoes against a Japanese cargo approaching the Philippines, but only one hit, seven missed, and did not blow up. This incident sparked a long list of issues with the Navy's technological marvel, with only three ships sunk and a few exploding before colliding with a Japanese ship's side. The US submarine fleet faced similar challenges during the war, with submarine commanders expressing frustration with the effectiveness of their torpedoes.
    The American submarine force used to use torpedoes during World War I and World War II, with the Mark 14 being the most advanced model. The Mark 14s were heavy, expensive weapons, weighing over three thousand pounds and capable of traveling 9,000 yards at 46 knots. The Mark 6 exploder was crucial for the torpedo's effectiveness, but it was not tested due to its sensitivity. During Pearl Harbor, American submarine commanders held BuOrd accountable for their lack of initiative. Rear Admiral Charles Lockwood conducted an unofficial test of the torpedoes, revealing that they were going much below predetermined depths. Despite the evidence, BuOrd disregarded the results, claiming that the submarine commanders had not properly trimmed the torpedoes. In response, Lockwood was named COMSUBPAC, and BuOrd refused to disconnect the torpedoes' magnetic exploders. The Japanese Navy continued to sail without incident, and the American submarine fleet faced increasing resistance from the Japanese.
    In 1943, submarine commanders in Japan faced increasing failures and untimely explosions in their torpedoes. Lockwood demanded action from Admiral Ernest J. King, who issued a directive to detach magnetic exploders from every torpedo. Commander Charles B. Momsen, a creative submarine engineer, investigated the issue and found that the contact exploder was too delicate and too tough. Submarine commanders were informed that firing a torpedo at a target at 90 degrees was the most accurate and reliable angle, but Tinosa's experience showed that acute angles were not as preferred. Momsen and Taylor discovered that the firing pin of the contact exploder was being deformed by the head-on collision, and firing from any angle other than dead on was the optimal angle. Submarine commanders worked on reconstructing the contact exploder using exotic alloys, which were eventually incorporated into the Pacific Fleet's submarines.
    Pearl Harbor was a significant event in the American-Japanese war, with submarine commanders focusing on reaching targets. Momsen's efforts to resolve the torpedo issue led to the establishment of dependable torpedoes, resulting in the sinking of 55% of Japanese merchant ships by August 1945.

    The Japanese long lance torpedoes were far superior to the Mk 14.

    • @tomtrenter3208
      @tomtrenter3208 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The long lance torpedoes didn't decimate the /American merchant fleet and was only effective against warships until American naval brass realized it was capable of long range. It was not all that accurate nor did the Japanese have any fire control device to accurately aim them so they launched LARGE numbers in salvo's hoping that some would hit. The Mk 14 had 3 major problems that because of politics took about a year and a half to iron out. From late 1943 American subs swept through the Japanese merchant fleet like a scythe and sank a good portion of the Japanese navy. Once the defects were fixed, the Mk 14 aimed by the TDC (Torpedo Data Computer), was a much more effective weapon system than the long lance and remained in service till early 1970's.

    • @williamrobinson827

      @@tomtrenter3208 They didn't have fire control, but what they did have was a more powerful warhead, not to mention much longer range. That came to play at Savo Island.

    • @tomtrenter3208
      @tomtrenter3208 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You are right about Japan's longlance torpedo having a LARGE warhead and not having effective firecontrol. What you are forgetting though is that American officers ability to learn from the beatings we were taking. IN August of 1943 Commander Frederick Moosbrugger commanding 6 destroyers had intel of a Japanese "tokyo express coming, it's time and composition and laid an ambush for them. he placed his ships in close to an island to screen them from Japan's inferior radar and waited till they got close enough. They tracked the Japanese ships getting good firecontrol solutions for their torpedoes. At the right time he fired all their torpedoes and waited for them to start hitting and then opened fire with all the guns in range. The final score: NO American ships sunk or damaged, no one killed and only 1 man injured, Japan: 3 destroyers sunk,1,210 killed
      Japan's legendary longlance didn't do them any good. Good intelligence of enemy locations, electronics and weapons made all the difference. America's big mistake was underestimating Japan's ability to make and use weapons suck as the longlance. The American high ranking officers didn't recognize the range of the Japanese torpedoes and when our ships were being sunk and damaged they thought it was mines. They persisted in this line of thought and our casualties were the result. Once someone lower in command tried something new then things changed.

  • @jackorders

    I have read that the German Navy had problems with their torpedoes running too deep at the start of the war. I have also read that Hitler had 4 of his torpedo designers tried for treason and shot. After that the torpedoes started working. As we shot no one, it took about 18 months to fix the problems. At least 4 of our responsible officers should have been busted and put in the boiler rooms as ordinary seamen. After Pearl Harbor, America was desperate for some kind of victory which was made impossible with defective torpedoes that had been certified to work as intended. Numerous capital ships, including at least two carriers were struck with duds at a time when the Japanese were taking over the Pacific. Had the torpedoes worked, fewer islands would have been captured and later have to be retaken, requiring thousands of lives. The cost of the dereliction of those officers can scarcely be calculated. History shows that court martial officers are often lenient to incompetent fellow officers, but will crucify enlisted men for the same incompetence.

      @jackorders
      Torpedoes aren't designed to run shallow or deep. The depth of run is set by the crew before launch, to adjust for the tactical situation. The problem both Germans and Americans had was the magnetic detonators which were new tech that had not been fully debugged. Contact detonators needed shallow run settings to make contact with the hull . Magnetic detonators trigger when the torpedo passes under the ship's magnetic field, so deeper run settings were necessary to work effectively. They should have identified the glitches before making them operational.

    • @williamrobinson827
      @williamrobinson827 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@BillMartin-h2g True about the detonators, but they also had problems with the depth. The issue was what little testing had been done by BuOrd was with dummy warheads. Yep, the depth control worked like a charm. But put a live warhead in and the torpedoes ran deep because the live warhead was heavier. This was proven by later testing.

After correctly identifying BuOrd as the US Navy Bureau of Ordnance, the narration somehow transformed it into somebody named Beward, who didn't see the "need to waste money on pointless testing because HE was on a restricted budget." The real HE involved in the whole mess was Admiral Ralph Waldo Christie, who had been in charge of development of the fiasco and swore constantly that there was nothing wrong with the torpedoes, but the sub crews and skippers were to blame. I don't know what is most ridiculous - his self-serving blindness to the truth, the fact that he wasn't drummed out of the navy, OR THIS VIDEO!
