This past summer, Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks was struck and killed by fireworks at a 4th of July celebration. His best friend and teammate, fellow Latvian goaltender Elvis Merzlikins, shares the story of their friendship and how he plans to honor his “little brother”.

On opening night this season Elvis wore Mattis’s number 80 with Mattis’s family present. He earned an 8-2 victory. Mattis’s number will be in the rafters for the remainder of this season. Mattis’s last game ever played in the NHL was a 5-4 victory. Rip #80.

I was at the opening game as part of my ticket package. The roar of the crowd when Elvis came out with the #80 jersey was like nothing I’ve experienced before. Elvis was so emotional.

Mattis played a short time for our echl team (kwings) I remember the first time we was able to meet him he took time to talk and listen to my son (who stutters and gets nervous very easy). Mattis told my son never give up on your dreams. If you dream it you can succeed and make it a reality. My son has this written out to read daily. Mattis will always have a special place in this mommas heart. The day he passed was like one of our family members passed. Go rest high Mattis. Hope your enjoying that big ice rink in the sky.

I remember hearing the news the morning after this horrific incident, i can't imagine how he must feel to lose a great friend that saved his pregnant wife, and his other son, im sure elvis will remember that for a lifetime, May Matiss Rest In Peace❤️🕊
I met Matiss Kivlenieks in 2018 he took about a half hour just talking to me about his dreams of playing for the Blue Jackets he was a good one. Glad you lived your dream.

From the beginning of the war in Donbas I've started to hate firework noises which now sound deadly to me.
I'm a big fan of hockey in N. America. Latvia is a neighbor nation to the North from the country where I'm living. I know how Latvians love hockey. It's a small nation which always delegates great players to NHL. It was a huge achievement for Latvia to have as many as two great goalies in one NHL team from the same country. But unfortunately not for so long...

What is really sad the Hockey World will never get to see his future talent. He might of been in the company of other great goalies like Roy, Brodeur, Fleury and others. This young man did a very brave thing to save others.
Apparently he was needed elsewhere. Now he is in the lineup with Beliveau, Bouchard, Hawerchuk, Howe, Lindsay, Mikita..and other greats.

Indeed. Perhaps he could have been next Latvia's Arturs Irbe (legendary Latvian goalie). But now we will never have him. Sad when good decent people die before their natural time, double sad when people with great potential die before their natural time.

heartbreaking. i have so much respect for elvis for this story. he was truly there for his friend til the end, i consider him a bit of hero. he did what he could and i especially appreciate he spoke lativian to him to help his friend. rip kivi. gone too soon.

This was like 100x harder than the hardest slap shot he ever stopped, and it possibly saved an unborn child although sadly costing him his life.....what a goalie.
Sometimes, life really sucks but it all happens for a reason. One day, if you're fortunate enough you will be able to see it all differently than you do now.
I remember when this happened. It hit the Hockey community hard. To his fellow players, his family and his friends...please accept my deepest condolences. I'm so sorry. 😢💔🙏

To Elvis and the Columbus Blue Jackets, keep your head up and keep grinding for Matiss. Also to Elvis specifically, though I doubt you'll see this, I want to apologize on behalf of the Stars fanbase for what was said to you after Matiss' passing. What trash person didn't even deserve to be in a Stars jersey, let alone in a hockey arena, and he will get what's coming to him. I can't express how badly hearing that story of what happened to you hurt as not only a Stars fan, but a Jackets fan as well. You didn't deserve what was said to you, and my heart was extremely heavy for you when you lost Matiss' and then had to deal with that bullshit too.

I had the great honor of playing against him in juniors in the MnJHL. He was so damn good for Edina. He carried that team on his back. He earned everything he got in his life. He was so dedicated to the game. I miss him so much.

The memorial at the opening night after he died was very sad.. Im positive they wanted to honor him by trying to get 8-0 but they got 8-2 which is unbelievable but his death was tragic.. He will forever be remembered

As a goalie for 17 years, I see life through the eyes of a goalie. I study the position, the game I love. I am a Devils and Russian fan. It is AMAZING that ANY lineup from Latvia defeats ANY Canada team. I wonder if that was his last win or game? This is a BEAUTIFUL story of friendship. As A Devils fan I have NOT been happy with our scouting for goalies. I really like Blackwood but for the past two years I have LOVED watching Blue Jackets hockey because of the goaltending. Sadly I was not able to see any games last year due to injuries and other I sustained. I have been wanting the Devils to trade for one of the three goalies in CBJ land. I am glad we did not now, I would not want to break up what they had. I LOVE LOVE the mask Elvis had made, especially the wings on 80. When I heard about this I cried. CBJ have GREAT jerseys, I wish I could get them but I am Devils fan but a hockey first. Hope I can one day, maybe Latvia. I am so sorry and for this to be his last save? I am NOT a fan of ESPN talent, but this was a great special....THANK YOU. Keep strong Elvis and family #80 HERO!

It was on my birthday that I went to a Matiss Kivlenieks’s last home game starting. I was on vacation in Norris Lake when my sister walked down the stairs, crying. She told us the news, and I walked out to the balcony and considered my choices during that last game… as soon as we found out Kivlenieks was starting, we started chanting, “we want Elvis”. Now I want to do something for the Blue Jackets community and Kivi’s family. I can not explain how sorry I am. I know an apology will not restore his death, but I wish that the CBJ community forgives me. R.I.P. Kivi #80. Good bye and one last time, I am very sorry.

Im from Latvia and im very sad about what happened but in 2023 hockey championship we got a new goalie and he got the award for the most valuble player in the tournament and his name is Artūrs Šilovs RIP Matīss Kivlenieks

many of you may not know but he played for an ahl team called the cleveland monsters and i am a big cleveland monsters fan and because his family was in columbus for the cbj opening night they came up to cleveland for their opening night and the monsters are doing a lot of the same stuff that columbus is doing to honor him
