In my humble opinion,I loved this figure.I was in elementary in the early 90's so I was more of a 90's Joe kid.We use to play with all the Drednots a lot from both the 80's and 90's and use them as cyberpunk characters and zartan version 2 was always my guy.😎

That was a brilliant piece of work alluding to Zandar not being remembered. I saw what you did there with Zarana. Very clever and worth a thumbs up on its own.

Hi, HCC! Just back from the pub quiz (didn't win this week). Thanks for the codename. The mention of Michael Jackson reminds me of my 7th birthday, which happened to coincide with a school disco. The girl next door got the DJ to play a Michael Jackson track in reference to my name, which was cool, but I really wanted to get home because I'd just received the Killer Whale and the Cobra Moray and I was more interested in them.

That thumbnail does this figure FAR more justice than it deserves. this was my first proper zartan (i had the V1, but none of the accessories and the skin was somehow made permanently blue) and i loved it.

Aside from the neon green pants, this really wasn't a bad Zartan design IMHO. (though to be quite honest, I'm somewhat ok with garish, obnoxious colors on a Dreadnok )
Also, I'm glad to hear I wasn't entirely mistaken in thinking his cowl was hair as a kid because I always did.

Your always introducing figures that I didn't even know existed. Your doing an excellent job producing high quality content in spite of the tough times of late. You should be very proud Bryan. Have a good week and only do as much as you feel capable of doing, we can wait. Love to the family.

Thanks for the reviews. I totally agree; Zartan V2 is a great Dreadnok figure. My Zartan V1 figure would frequently wear the Cairo Swordman's robe or Sallah's robe from the Indiana Jones line. This way, he could be disguised (bearded face) and no one would recognize him. I think they should have released this Zartan with a motorcycle, a normal motorcycle. I hope things worked themselves out!

This version of Zartan is my main zartan in my collection, displayed with my dreadnoks. My only issues are the green pants and the lack of screw for repairs/customization. Still, a pretty great figure

I miss my nightforce Spearhead and Max. Jesus that was a great looking figure. Much cooler than the original colors. Back in the mid 90s when I had no concept of toys being worth something in the future I made a dental floss necklace with the disassembled parts of Spearhead, Muskrat (both nightforce versions) and Rock Viper. I thought I was cool but I was a fool.

    Great review!
I remember picking up this figure in 93 and while I liked the figure for what it was I had to justify it's place in my Joeverse. What I decided was this figure was in fact the disquise. He used it from time to time to get the jump on his targets. In this case it was a ninja or two.
Glad to hear you're feeling a little better!

When I was a kid... It kind of just seemed like they were using the term "Ninja" as an all encompassing umbrella for "Martial Artist." With guys like Zartan (One of my all time favorite characters and I could finally play with him... Though wasn't he training with the Arashikage for a while before he killed the Master?), Bushido, Banzai (I think they tried to "sword brother" those two guys like Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes), Nunchuk and Dojo. Where some were kung fu masters or something of the sort. I was left wondering about Jinx and Budo version 2s.

  • @gazz_N7

No, no. That is not Zartan. A Dreadnox, yeah, but not Zartan. An orange mohawk, and neon green pants...oh 90s Joe's...you always seem to surprise me every time. When I've thought I seen it all, wham! You hit me with yet another timeless wonder I wish I never had seen. Zartan was trained by the Arashikage swordsmith, Onihashi. He was also able to emulate Storm Shadow when he killed the Hard Master. So he does have some claim to being a ninja.

If the leg knife sheaths had been placed on the side of the leg it would’ve looked a lot better. The garish colors I’m ok with. It was the 90’s after all. Thanks for the review Hoodie CoCo. Keep up the good work 👍🏻

Thanks for the great review. I had some of the ninja force characters, but never really could reconcile that guys with melee weapons had any chance against tier one operators like the Joes. I’m not sure if they were starting to grasp at strings, or if I just was getting old enough to be critical.

As I understand it, Ninja Force was attempted by Hasbro to compete with Playmates popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toy line. Additionally, Badai's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers toy line debuted in 1993 and likely Hasbro felt it needed to compete with another property that was martial arts centric.
Plus, alongside Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, in the G.I. Joe comic book from Marvel comics there was a Ninja team made up a renegade branch of the Arashikage clan. They hunted Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow for a time. Also, the Night Creepers were a team of Ninjas that would often work for Cobra on various assignments that required special skills to accomplish. Like Ninja Force, the Night Creepers favored traditional Ninja weaponry such as swords and crossbows.

Hasbro should have had on the file card, Dr Mindbinder experimented on Zartan and his siblings, making them into mutants that can change the color and appearance at will. That would have made more sense (IMO). 👍😎

A figure that if the colors were just a little muted, I'd call a favorite. The orange hair can stay, just tone it down a little and he matches his siblings fine! I can even believe the hair with the mention that he is of course the leader of the Dreadnoks, maybe he had a half-shave under the hood already and decided to get crazy with hair gel one day!

It wasn't till we got the book to find out who all the Joes were in the box I picked up at a yard sale. I honestly thought the Ninja Force figures were a different action figure all together. Out of the Ninja Force my son had Zartan, Scarlett, Storm Shadow and the red figure, either Slice or Dice. If the colors had be more muted and the articulation like the other Joes Zartan would have been a better figure.

I still have this figure and the other ninja force figs that I got from back then. There are a few of them I didn't get. Didn't get Bushido or Dojo because, I didn't like them. Missed out on the Sake Eyes and Scarlet because, I couldn't find them. I don't remember my thoughts on T'Gin-zu. I didn't remember he existed. But, there's no point to him anyway because, he uses the say mold as Storm Shadow. Also, missed out the Night Creeper of this line because, I never could scrounge the money together when I'd go and see that he was in stock.

If they would have gone with black face makeup (the orange mohawk doesn't bother me at all) like the original and gone with olive drab or dark green pants, it would have made him look like something out of the Mad Max universe and IMHO would have been one of the better updates of a core character.

I honestly don't see the problem with him having the mohawk underneath the cowl... just because the hair *can* be spiked doesn't mean it *has* to be, and it's entirely possible he just swept it back when he had the hood up.
That said, the most *practical* hairdo for a master of disguise would be just straight bald - after all, that would make it easier to put on any wig he liked to imitate the hair of anyone he was trying to impersonate (this is the reason that many Shakespearean actors, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, are bald... he'd have trouble growing it out now because of his age of course, but as I understand it Sir Pat was bald through choice way before he started losing it on top because it made it easier to play a variety of different roles with different hairstyles without having to cram his real hair under a wig). I guess it's up to him if he wanted to shave his head with a shuriken rather than a razor, but I think that's probably more of a rumour he put about to sound more badass to his Dreadnok buddies.

I had this figure as a kid and didn't love him. I didn't love Zartan in general then because his appearance was baffling to me (cowl as hair/hair as cowl, I always thought it was hair until I saw the 84 figure much later in life), weird face tattoos/makeup, exposed midriff, etc. I only knew him from the cartoon, so Ninja Force Zartan made no sense to me as a kid, either. It was not a figure that got a lot of use, even though I loved most of my Ninja Force figures (especially Slice, Dice, Nunchuk, and Storm Shadow).
But, after I read the entire original Marvel run at about age 17 or so, Zartan became my favorite character on the bad guys' side. I started finding his oddball look endearing. I bought the terrible 2001 SAW Viper Zartan and he was my main version of the character for years, despite his many flaws (worst Zartan ever made, easily). I re-purchased NF Zartan about a year ago and now I love him. He's a master of disguise and the leader of a biker gang. The look makes total sense. And you definitely can just leave your mohawk down, comb it to the side, and fit it under a hood. Or a hat. He doesn't beat out the original Zartan in any way, but he's an awesome figure. Mike T of Forgotten Figures also had the awesome idea that this could represent Zartan before he was sent to kill Snake Eyes, just how he looked when he operated as a weird Australian mercenary.
The OG Zartan (along with Street Fighter Movie Chun Li) is kind of my holy grail figure right now. I have the comic pack version (nice figure), Funskool version, Ninja Force version, terrible SAW Viper version, and a sort of biker-style Zartan kitbash I made. But none of them can fill in for the original.
Thanks for a great review, as always! And for keeping an open mind for the line's later years.

I have to agree this version of Zartan does integrate well with Dreadnoks,(Curious thing, the Zandar video was displayed along the side, and the 2 have similarities) BUT, this is a NINJA Force figure so it's not quite as advertised. But then Ninja Force played a little fast and loose with Scarlett, and while bringing back a fan favorite is a plus, to some extent they may have been padding their numbers for Ninja Force. I also believe there is a similar issue with Mega Marines Clutch.

This is one of the times I disagree with you, but not for your principles. Zartan blends in much better with his brother and sister in this guise. He looks more like the leader of the Dreadnoks looking like this. That being said, his story and background into ninjitsu and assassin-for-hire has never been explored, at least to my knowledge, to the depth that could be a hit. He could really be one of those, like Snake Eyes, who could spin off into a miniseries and be its own success. He probably is my favorite Cobra/bad guy figure. Good luck with all.

Ninja Force Storm Shadow was working for Santa Claus while Ninja Force Zartan was working for Willy Wonka. A.k.a. Rocky Horror Picture Show Zartan. I got this figure when EBay first started. Like a fish you catch. I wish I could have thrown it back. He still part of my collection though. But this version is an abomination. Zartan to me is one of the most interesting of the Cobras. Next to Destro. I would not consider him as Zartan but Zartans stand in for when he's with Cobra. He's the stand in leader for the street Dreadnoks gang activities.

This version frustrated me so much(in part because his facial markings were described as tattoos originally) maybe still does.

Being a master of disguise, it's a shame he didn't come with a mask...and as a ventriloquist it's also a shame he didn't come with a ventriloquist dummy lol

i bought this loose figure at Indianapolis comic con in 2017 when i got to meet and talk to the beautiful and ever so nice Jewel Staite ( kaylee on firefly ) and Brianna Hildebrand ( nagasonic teenage warhead on deadpool ) comic cons are full of all kinds of great merchandise and lots and lots of very nice people, some of whom are cosplayers...yes i love the cosplayers, they do an awesome job but as i was saying, i bought this figure loose with snake eyes ( version 5 of the ninja force ) im my opinion the "ninja feature " kinda puts both figures to lower tier level for me...and i just dont like zartans mowhawk ....
