Globalization means that parts come from many places, some in North America and others from Asia/Europe, but this still does NOT make those Canadian workers' jobs less 'Canadian'. The poor performance of the Big Three is lamentable, but again that does NOT mean that those Canadian workers' jobs less 'Canadian'. We end up subsidizing Chinese jobs and we fall further behind on being able to make anything in Canada. We also will lose whatever auto jobs we have left. Letting consumers decide is a dumb idea. Look at the choices many Canadians make concerning global warming and putting a price on carbon. When Trudeau says 100% tariffs, does that mean 100% of their wholesale price? 100% of their current import duty rate? 100% of their manufacturers suggested retail price? I spent a few months in China last year and had a chance to see and ride in a lot of amazing vehicles. There are basically no small, inexpensive vehicles in Canada available for purchase and the big three US automakers cannot produce them cheap enough to make a profit. Canada should welcome smaller, inexpensive EVs from China with open arms and no import tariffs. This would provide affordable transportation to the masses and promote EV infrastructure development to support them which would also help to drive the sales of larger domestic EVs. I personally wouldn't consider an EV as my primary vehicle, but an inexpensive, smaller EV would be great as a second vehicle for city use and I would only use my larger ICE vehicle for winter and long distance travel. Unfortunately, this isn't going to happen in Canada without the approval of the US government.

This is because according to Chinese law, all Chinese companies are obliged to share any data collected with the central Chinese government. Since the electric car is powered by a super computer, it will collect a lot of information and video about the driver. That means the Chinese government will know exactly how we live in Canada. This is a narrow view. We aren’t China. We don’t have the subsidiaries to have all the charging station to run the shitty batteries they put out. We need to build a recycling facilities for lithium ion and try to import materials from partners in Africa. Also we need to mine anything we possibly can mine and utilize to become independent from Chinese junk.

We are going around it all wrong in North America we don’t need Chinese garbage. We need to end dependency and make new partners. Not isolation but embracing new opportunities building up Africa. Instead our enemies are 20 years ahead of us and stirring up trouble to boot.

read an artical not so long ago of a car manufacturer in north america importing a cheap BYD..they totally stripped it down and checked it out...their synopsis was, that if BYD came to north america it would decimate the car manufacturing here because the chinese vehicals were so well made in every way...and cheaper...perhaps our car builders could take note and start to build a decent product...perhaps a bit of competition is what we need
