Maybe this is why we need physical copies... with manuals... that explain the controls... just like 30 years ago.
Exactly
@@josemiguelsilva8995 exactly
I mean, physical copies would be nice. But that is the weakest argument I've seen for it.
A digital manual packed with the games could very well have been made, no need for physical anything, if the argument is about explaining the game's controls.
In fact doing it like that would be even easier, since there would be no need for materials (paper, etc.) and no need to pay and wait for printing, which is something that does take quite a lot of time when we're talking about printing in large scales like this, even if it doesn't look like it.
@@SchrollShepard youre going way too in depth with it. You act like printing is such a daunting task now. You gotta be a genz. A physical game with a physical manual would be awesome. Theres no debate here.
Agreed! Or even 15 years ago, hah. Is it weird that I still have playthrough books for some games that I will continue to play until I die? Even if I know them by heart now? In the days before youtube let’s plays… What a time. I love youtube let’s play walkthroughs, but the nostalgia trip of furiously thumbing through a massive book to find what you missed… Damn… Wow, those books were expensive, though. Damn😂
i would love to see this level of remaster for so many more PS1 games like Kain series and Parasite Eve
PARASITE EVE ❤❤❤ OH MY GOD 🎉🎉
Kain in particular would be epic
Pandemonium!
That would be awesome! I never got to play the LoK series but it looked fantastic. I would pick up a remaster in a heartbeat.
@@celticnoble5650 Part 1 in particular needs some liberties. Like it should be the same but real 3D this time with dynamic camera angles at some parts.
I have no problem with the tank controls because I miss the fixed camera angles in gaming. The visuals were stunningly remade. My fave in the classics apart from TR4 last revelation is TR3 the adventures of Lara Croft.
Finally some Venice footage! TR2's my favorite.
The original controls are perfect for the precise jumps you have to make - you just have to know how to use them
Great to see it remastered and hope they do the last revelation and chronicles soon been waiting years for these games big fan since 1997
And Angel of Darkness 😎. It would be amazing if they continued with the old Lara after Angel of Darkness remaster, if it ever comes out
Omg yes! I would love a remaster of TR 4, Chronicles and AOD. TR 4 is a personal fav 🤓
I do wonder sometimes if the fact that games media ppl have to play so many games a year that they are less inclined to learn how a game plays if it’s a bit different like this or classic Resident Evil.
But ppl who only get a few games each year (and don’t have a review embargo to be ready for) will be more free to take it at their own pace and learn it all (and some will still want to throw their controller/switch out the window)
Not criticising any of the lovely duo in the video tho cos I do enjoy watching and listening to their output, butit is something that I’ve wondered about before about how the job part affects how deep all reviewers can get into things.
I think there is probably an element of that in terms of games with deep mechanics, but these old games were always frustrating to control & not having a tutorial for the modern controls at all (as the game tells you to do the wrong thing) is going to be a problem for anyone.
I love how Ian thinks fans of the modern trilogy might not enjoy the remaster. I grew up with the original PS games (1-4) and played them so much, that I struggle to enjoy the modern trilogy. I miss the tank controls and level design, and mechanics of the original games
I played the original games only a few years ago, so even though I don't particularly miss tank controls, I also don't get the "hate" they get. These were the first games I ever played with such a control scheme, and it took me a whole, mind blowing, 10 or so minutes to get used to them, and I played the games perfectly fine thereafter.
Do these people who talk about tank controls like it's the worst plague this planet has ever seen just suffer from some form of adhd or something?
Regardless, even though I only played the classic games fairly recently, and free from the constraints of nostalgia for them, I still consider them much better and more engaging than the survival trilogy, which let's be honest, are not Tomb Raider games, they're generic 3rd person shooters with a TR skin slapped over them.
The levels are much more intricate, and require actual exploration and skill to find secrets/key items and survive/beat.
The atmosphere is just different and unique, I felt truly alone, while exploring the levels of the classic games, alone in a peaceful sort of way; not bad, but tranquil, pleasant. Except some parts where they used that sense of loneliness to make it feel like a sort of horror game, tense and even slightly scary, I loved it.
Anyways, the classics are great, and I hope they make remasters of Last Revelation and Chronicles to complete this collection, that would be fantastic. (And maybe even a remaster of Angel of Darkness, fix all the jank and problems of that game, and underneath all that, it's actually an enjoyable game)
@@SchrollShepardit’s the same with classic Resident Evil where while there are some ppl legitimately can’t adapt to character-relative controls but the majority of ppl against them don’t even try to learn how to play the game and just quit after 5 mins cos it’s not identical to everything else they played.
It’s one do the things I don’t like about modern games cos it feels like so many games are skins of each other cos we design gameplay around standardised control schemes and not creating new controls for new gameplay.
I am absolutely amazed that people miss tank controls! Maybe it was just me because I was so bad with them, but wow was I ever bad with them😂
I’m not sure if I exactly miss the tank controls, but after spending countless hours finishing 1-5 & AoD, I really mastered the tank controls.
I was much better controlling Lara with tank controls than the first reboot trilogy, despite having finished the wii, ps2, psp, & xbox versions.
I started a new play through of Revelations a few years ago and instantly felt at home with tank controls.
its baffling why they’d go through the effort of updating the controls but then not explain them to you. I get them not wanting to change the voiceover during the tutorial but surely some pop up boxes or something would have sufficed
Or they could've just got the original voice actors in to do some lines.
It's exactly as it has been for the last 6 or so Tomb Raider games.. Hold aim to move backwards.
@@runarvollan but that’s not all you’re doing in the game though is it. it was mentioned a few times in the video how frustrating it was not knowing how to perform specific actions throughout the game because it just apparently never tells you
@@josemiguelsilva8995 if you can’t show basic common courtesy then perhaps you shouldn’t be allowed to interact with other people.
Been a while since I heard the Northern Irish accent on TH-cam (now residing in the Philippines). Great review, guys. Shame about the trophy stack without a platinum on PS5.
20 hours 🥳
Tank controls are better, I can't see myself playing with that newest style ugh. For someone who played all the tomb raider games, I prefer the classic ones on PS1 (well my first one was Tomb raider 2). They had that magical feeling you just can't find with the new ones
Tank controls are definitely more precise and the way the game was intended
my first one was TR2 too, on a powerMac. But my heart goes with TR legends on ps2
The legend trilogy was solid, but I didn't love it for some reason@@matycuervito
The controls are a miracle, fluid movements like Anniversary.
And with practice you can jump from any square like nothing.
@@LukaNyan i remember that i just finished the prince of persia trilogy when i started to play legends, so the fast pasing platforming was a really nice touch for me
Started playing last night and I was surprised how well I could control Lara using the tank controls. It was like riding a bike for me and I think if you master them the game controls quite well.
So would you say this game controls would be OK for those who have played Tomb Raider Anniversary, Legend, and Underworld? Cos what you said about controls concerns me a bit.
Its better to just learn the old controls. The games map is built around tank controls, and once you learn them, the games are elevated because of it. Its not a situation where like in RE that its a problem. An example is that 1 backstep is the length of a block, and it takes running 1 block length to do a running jump, so you kind of math out these crazy perfect jumps. Its quite satisfying.
@rawrharhar so tank controls would be more useful than the modern control.
The controls are just like Anniversary, but you have to walk slowly for some jumps.
Brilliant to see these done for modern gamers to play. I wish Konami had done this with MGS.
Be fun to hear how our younger generation of gamers cope with playing these games with tank controls. For me I am looking forward to playing them on my switch all the way through with tank controls. Its the only way to truly understand where the modern games came from.
I loved the tank controls and loved that you had to save manually. Im just happy i have a modern way to play these games now. Make the original graphics mode 60 fps too or improve frame pacing and it's the perfect package.
Anybody know how it runs on the Deck?
I totally get new players coming into this and feeling its age and struggle with the controls etc, and it's totally fine. But I think what these games offer are more than nostalgia. This type of action adventure that focuses on puzzles, exploration, doesn't hold your hand, etc is hard if not impossible to find in the market today. New TR, Uncharted and the like are basically shooters with the occasional easy puzzle and automatic platforming. So yeah we fans of the originals do hope that the new TR leans more towards this era, eve if it's a pipe dream because it doesn't have mass appeal.
Legendary game my childhood best game
I am so excited to finally get this game for the switch, I would like to ask do you have to complete the first game to get to second one?
No, you can drop in and out between them at the main menu whenever you want (just remember to save).
thanks @@nightcatarts
Chronicles was my favorite and I never finished it. Hopefully they commit to remaking it along with TR4.
I've been wanting these remasters for so long and I am not disappointed! I'm so glad reviewers are being fair about them because since Crystal Dynamics took over, the classic games have been treated like a punching bag. They could have done more to entice/benefit new players but overall I'm just so happy to have classic Lara and classic Tomb Raider gameplay back! I really really hope future Tomb Raider games take more inspo from this era.
EDIT: I strongly recommend you DON'T use the modern controls and instead take 10 minutes to get to grips with the tank controls. The entire game was designed for those controls and once you have mastered them you will have a much more satisfying experience. Think of it like a soulsborne game. It's not meant to be easy but if you take the time to learn the controls and develop the muscle memory, you will be rewarded.
Absolute classics. What started companies making games like this like uncharted
I'm in two minds about this. The visual overhaul is really nice, though the lighting could have done with a bit more drama to it, but it's like they've only half-overhauled the controls which leaves them on par with games that came out just before twin stick standards began being agreed upon. I don't know why they wouldn't bring them up to fully modern at this point since I think the games would still play just fine without the tank method, plus purists could use the original controls instead. The camera having a mind of its own stuff also seems like it's a glitch with the feature that makes the camera focus on important things, so that hopefully can be fixed.
If anyone's interested in a more old-fashioned experience I would actually not recommend these games, but instead TB Legend, Anniversary and Underworld. Great puzzles, better controls, and they still feel quite close to the originals in terms of tone. Anniversary is also basically a remake of the first game. All are highly recommended.
I didn't enjoy the original gameplay even back when, to be honest. So the Legend trilogy is the one I'm nostalgic for. I also enjoyed the reboot trilogy quite a bit, but it's wo different it's almost of another genre.
Reboot and LAU trilogy’s are whack, original 90’s Lara rules and the LAU trilogy has nothing to do with tomb raider, and let’s not even get started with the horrible survivor trilogy
I see a dust covered PS4 sitting on a shelf across the room ...... where can I obtain a copy of this marvelous game ???
Digital shops only unfortunately, at least for now.
I'm playing on ps4. How do access the medical kit . I can't seem to find the right button 😮
You have to pause the game, get the inventory ring up on the screen, move it to a small or large medipack, as required, and press action.
Sorted thank you 😊
@@philwhelan226 No worries, mate. 👍 However, in a similar vein, on Tomb Raider 2 there is a quicker way to automatically access flares without going into the inventory ring. Simply press "the inventory button" and "right bumper" on xbox simultaneously (i.e. use the equivalent buttons on PS. Right bumper would be R1) to use a flare. To drop a lit flare, press the two buttons simultaneously again or get the guns out.
To pick up a flare that is on the ground and is still lit, press "action".
Why asia playstation store dont have this? How to buy?
It doesn't launch until the 14th. Maybe it's pushed back until it's the 14th everywhere for some reason?
I wouldn't bother unless you got money to waste
Off course we all want to know 😂
It's exactly as it has been for the last 6 or so Tomb Raider games.. Hold aim to move backwards.
I think the issue is that you have to hold aim & tap, not hold, backwards, & the game doesn't tell you that. It really could do with a tutorial for the "modern" controls since there just isn't one at all, or better yet they could make the controls work like a modern game where everything is more intuitive.
Lara's from Derby - you should come visit Lara Croft Way up here! (It won a public vote) 😊
I think Aspyr should have, and hopefully will in a future patch, add on-screen prompts when performing actions e.g. "press Left button + Square to exit boat" to help players come to grips with the controls.
game literally has no sound for most of us on the Steam version, it's so annoying, no workaround, need to wait on an official patch i guess.
Spoiler alert:- what they didn't tell you about the butler is that he actually freezes up when locked in the freezer
I knew they would fuck it up - you cannot save and load if you´re offline (let me repeat that - you cannot save and load offline, unbelievable!)
No, the modern controls are not better. They may feel smoother due to years of third person action games, but the Tomb Raider titles are built around the tank controls.
The modern co trolls are better the tank controls suck hard
I never played Tomb Raider when it came out, and I question that I want to try.
I remember it being awesome on the 360... But maybe I should just leave it as a good memory.
Gameplay with modern controls like this is really hard to watch :p
Tank controls all the way!
Lara Croft, my favourite sociopath and a t-rex extinction enthusiast. I wish the reboot series had tried to lean more into her nature as a crazy person, but instead they made her incredibly bland.
She got plenty serial killery as the new trilogy went on.
@@nightcatarts Yet she's still oddly boring.
@@Arexion5293 Yea. I think they tried to straddle the line between traumatic drama and her character's legacy personality, but there just weren't enough moments where she could stop running or being under imminent threat or whatever for her to relax and have a laugh. Perhaps the puzzle rooms could have provided some more of that, though she was always on her own in them too & is better with a foil to play off.
Your comment about how the puzzles don’t spell out everything for you is a criticism of MODERN puzzles not Tomb Raider. It was infuriating in God of War when the NPCs give you the solutions to every puzzle before you have time to form a coherent fucking thought. Modern puzzle solving sucks.

All of these deaths are on you pal
Waiting for Gen z to demand a easy mode
No, keep 30 fps for oldschool!
It's "bad" enough that we don't also get 320x 240 resolution..;-p

Isn't it sad that when we talk about modern players, we always take into consideration that people are lazier to think, and that only what's dumbed down will be successful? It's really sad that people don't want to be challenged intellectually anymore. A lot of the complaints about old TR puzzles being hard can be explained by the current player base's low IQ.
Why does he down talk the classic games so much. I understand being critical and reviewing something but damn.
Chud needs to gitgud!
@@josemiguelsilva8995 All three versions of Lara are great.
Yes. Melonie Mac channel has a straight up stalker obsession with original Lara, but I enjoyed all iterations.@@Commander_Shepard.
@@Commander_Shepard. sorry but LAU Lara was original Lara with daddy issues and the new survivor Lara is just a plain boring character
@@Vladimirlives13 I stumbled upon one of her videos recently, and was immediately put off by her animosity toward newer games. It's okay to prefer one version over the other but she is just too...much.
20 minutes of two adults complaining that a 90’s games is just to hard and that ppl won’t like it is just for the nostalgia bla bla this Ubisoft gamers only like games if they have 200 icons a minimap and a cheat sheet with all the puzzles solutions
Ian is a retro gamer, you rude, presumptive dolt. Games back then were a lot harder than they are now and that will be challenging for younger gamers to get to grips with, even without the unexplained combi controls and sticky/glitchy camera.
*too hard, *people won’t… (I don’t even know how to correct the rest of your run-on sentence rant about, whatever the hell that was). Try harder, buttercup🫡
@@nightcatartsI really wish that I could like your comment more than once😂 maybe this fool will figure things out someday?
@@AK.Carcajou Some people can't seem to grasp that constructive criticism is how things improve over time. The least they could do is be less insulting when loudly proclaiming that ignorance though.
@@nightcatarts Nailed it! Maybe, and hopefully they’ll see this! And perhaps learn from this.
I wouldn't get this remaster on a console that is on par with the Ps2 hardware wise
Why not? It runs just fine.
Anyone who thinks the Switch is a PS2 level device is new to gaming.
All of this guy’s complaints are derived from him just being shit at games
Feel free to throw out your playthroughs, buttercup😘
I hated tomb raider! Did not have the patience.
2 min talking about boobs. Do you do the same with male protagonists? How sad
These are not just any boobs. The boob wedge is an iconic part of gaming history and deserves the mention.
Although I understand where you are coming from, Lara's pointy boobs are her most defining physical feature and are basically a decades old meme now.
Male protagonists usually don't even have boobs to begin with.
