- John Betjeman deploys charm and wit as he sings the praises of Wakefield and its people in this short travelogue from 1955, titled Wakefield, Yorkshire.
Yorkshire folk "are like their houses, unpretentious and a bit grim on the outside, but warm and kind within". This film is one in a 26-part series, Discovering Britain with John Betjeman, which was made by oil giants Shell to encourage motorists to explore Britain's delights by car.

A vision of England past that died under multiculturalism! RIP my beloved England!
It died under local government reforms and , Thatcher's annihilation of manufacturing, an obsession with cars and out of town shopping malls. I was born there, don't blame me for the catastrophe that befell our city. I regret it as much as you do.
It died because of Tory policies of defunding local institutions and public services. Stop blaming black people for it
