Thank you for the tour! I went to Art college on Margaret street 1990 to 1992 and Wakefield always looked and felt very vibrant and active. This video made me a bit sad, be ause it looks really dead and with all the empty shops. You never saw empty shops back then. I used to love going into the cathedral to sit and sketch, the lady who worked there used to make me cups of tea- folk used to be nice like that, not sure you'd get free cups of tea now they'd probably tell me to bog off. I loved Wakefield. I did well at college there, went on to get a degree in fashion/textiles and landed a design opportunity in New York City in 1994. I wound up staying, Now I live in the desert. I have to thank Wakefield and the college because it gave me a lot of creativity and good energy, very very happy days. Hello from Tucson Arizona.

Watching Gimbal Walk TV is like taking a trip back in time to my childhood when I grew up in West Yorkshire until I came to Australia when I was 11 in 1973. I was born in Huddersfield so we would often go to Leeds, Halifax, Wakefield, Manchester, Blackpool, Bridlington, Brighton, Scarness, Skegness, Whitby, York, Scarborough, Sheffield & Llandudno are all places I remember visiting either for holidays if it was at the beach or shopping if it wasn't near the beach. I'm loving watching these videos 😍👍 💖Hello from The Sunshine Coast, Queensland Australia🦘💖👋👋👋

Thank you for sharing this walk through this wonderful city. I lived there for 60 years, living abroad for the last 10 years and not been able to get across to England, Wakefield recently because of the Coronavirus restrictions. Looking forward to seeing the place again in the future. Thank you again.

Vicky please keep your memories of this once great city in your head. If you see it now you would be appalled. What Wakefield used to be is not there anymore. It is a withered husk now. No market, no shops, filth, beggars, buskers, rubbish everywhere. Search on YT for the old Ridings Shopping Centre videos and leave it there. Sad but true x.

@@shiver_me_timbers It's true that many things have changed in Wakefield, I last visited in 2019 and saw quite a lot had changed. I remember the opening of The Ridings was an exciting time, I believe it was one of the first such shopping centres in the North. I've watched a few of the TH-cam videos, lovely to look back on. Good memories.

Great video. Wakefield has some fantastic architecture. Just a shame it’s suffered in the hands of a council, that like many others, doesn’t listen to its residents. They tried to redevelop around Westgate not realising nobody uses that side of town. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I've been to Wakefield twice in June and July this year. In June I walked from railway station to Lupset to have a viewing on a new-built property, quite enjoying on the trip and on the July's trip, I just take bus from the city centre to the coal mine museum and also worth a visit from the viewpoint of a Hongkonger. Quite enjoying too.

    Thanks for covering Wakefield
The City gets a bit of a bad rap at times, although sometimes deserved, we’ve had too many years of unambitious Councillors letting the place slip into a decrepit sate. It’s only in the last 8 or 10 years that we’ve seen some modernisation and welcome addition to the City centre and surrounding areas. The Hepworth Gallery is amazing and the redevelopment of Kirkgate is continuing, Trinity Walk shopping centre, the new Wakefield College buildings, CAPA college and the redevelopment of the civic quarter around the Queen Victoria statue and the cenotaph.
Those who have lived in Wakefield during these years will speak critically about the demise but as one who sees many many other Towns and Cities of similar size and age, I can tell you that although Wakefield has deteriorated it is in far better shape than others.
The City centre has become a real destination for fine restaurants and good pubs.
We need a new and appropriate open market place, one which traders will be happy to return to. The loss of the old market, market house and fish market has been a huge blow to trade in the centre of town, the footfall from the old market spilled out into the surrounding shops and stores, without the market this no longer happens.

Wakefield seems to have transformed from a thriving shopping hub full of shoppers on week days and crammed with shoppers on Saturdays to a ghost town just a few decades.
I'm guessing that is equal parts retail park and malls in the 90's followed by internet shopping in the 2,000's and today and also some mismanagement by the council.
It is going to have to evolve into something else as a shopping destination alone will never compete with next day and sometimes same day Amazon delivery; not to mention far better prices and selection and often with free delivery online.
I think the best strategy is to transform the town centre into a place of commerce experiences that online or shopping malls can not give. I don't think just restaurants will do it but I'm sure a combination of things such as schools and colleges, restaurants, libraries, free parking and other things I can't think of could give the centre some life.
